I hate to do this but I could not finish this book. From the description it is about a mom who lives in Kansas and is struggling with anxiety and memory loss after a head injury. It hints that her husband is dangerous and a friend from her past returns. It also says it is similar to "The Woman in the Window". I felt like I was very misled by the description. This is a book about war. I do not read books about war, explosives, and descriptions of these things really bother me. One of the reasons I picked up this book is because the description says it takes place in Kansas where I live. Most of the book is set in Bosnia, Macedonia, Iraq and other countries with genocide and violence. I think a hint this in the description would be really helpful for this book to find the right audience. The cover has a quote "The perfect marriage leads to the perfect crime." Because of this, I was expecting a domestic thriller. I am feeling very misled.Thank you to NetGalley and Park Row Publishing for the free advanced reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.
Feelings of love, fear, and protectiveness make us human. When those feelings turn into paranoia and possessiveness, we become monsters. In Beautiful Bad, Annie Ward’s sophomore novel, we come to know three people who are driven by their fears and desire to protect those they love. Even seemingly minor characters are motivated by hopes to keep those near to them safe. In the beginning chapters of the novel, one narrator, Maddie, shares a list of her fears. They are largely anxieties, nightmares, and phobias we all share, ranging from terrorist attacks, marital disputes, the special vulnerability that is parenting small children, to fears that we are somehow not normal. The reader wants to reassure Maddie that there is absolutely nothing wrong with her because everyone worries about those things too. We all want to shield our dear ones from those that would harm them and from the ugliest parts of ourself. We all cover our scars and present a beautiful face to the world for the comfort of others. Beautiful Bad explores the the boundaries between reasonable cautiousness and insanity, where our sanctuaries become our prisons. In an expansive narrative spanning decades and continents, Beautiful Bad challenges the reader to think about how we love and allow ourselves to be loved, what makes us feel secure or threatened, who our heroes are and how those heroes can be wounded. It’s these bonds that connect a Midwestern housewife, an international relief worker, a British security officer, a police officer, a retired neighbor, an unconventional psychotherapist, and a 911 dispatcher in a well-crafted story that ends with a rollercoaster of unexpected revelations that will have the reader breathless for the final 50 pages. This book is a quick read and easy to follow notwithstanding a timeline that is not linear. It is witty and intelligently written with a carefully constructed foundation. The author effortlessly moves the reader between between various narrators, time periods, and countries in a narrative that will keep the reader guessing. The three main characters are unlike any most readers have encountered; they are complicated people in unimaginable circumstances but each has their own very passionate humanity that shows through by the end of the novel. The story has momentum that makes it hard to put down; you’ll want to read it at stop lights and the story will haunt you once the last pages are done.
This is a difficult book to review. I don't want to give anything away. You, the reader, should be able to read it without any idea what you are in for. Just like I did. Enjoy. It is a wonderful read.
A must read - I was engaged all the way through and very invested in all the principal characters. I am not a fan of characters or stories that are black and white - i.e. - these is the good guys and this those the bad guys - not the case here - everyone is flawed as we are in real life - I read this book in two days and could see the action unfolding in my mind the entire time...can't wait for the movie! Or Annie Ward's next book!
Such a great read. I devoured Beautiful Bad in virtually no time, and loved it from start to finish. Maddie is a anxiety ridden wife and mother. And Ian is her PTSD afflicted husband. What are their secrets and why caused Maddie’s disfiguring accident? Annie Ward has done a great job and I look forward to reading her work for years to come.
Full of suspense, dark thriller and hard to put down!
I could not put this book down, the characters came to life. The writer made you understand how the characters felt and looked at the world. The only part I was disappointed in was the ending, I felt there was more of the story to be told.
Twists and turns! Drama! Hard to put down! Yikes! I usually sleep on airplanes but I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished it quickly!
