My Cat is Fat is a 24 page kindle book that is most appropriate for toddlers to teach animal discrimination skills. A young boy loses his fat cat and comes across many other animals along the way. He discounts each other animal until he can say "That is my fat cat." The illustrations are simple, large and colorful, but the illustrator takes artistic license with colors. For example, she displays a red frog and a blue dog. However, I do believe the intent is to teach young children the basic shapes of the different animals. Text is simple and appropriate for very young children. This book makes a good read aloud.

My son reads a few books every night before he goes to bed. He read this book a few times and liked it, but then he was bored and hasn't asked for it since. I thought it was okay, but not one of my favorite of his children's books.I guess it does have cute illustrations but the book was a bit boring. Even my little boy thought so.It is easy to read for beginning readers and I think kids in kindergarten and lower might think that it is fun to read. My son is a bit older than this, so that is probably why he is bored with it.

This was a very nice short story about a kid's fat cat and wondering where it went off to, only to finally show up onit's own. My children love this short book and I've read it to them so many times now that they frequently "read" it to me instead (they are 3 and 5 and don't actually read yet, but they recognize the pictures and remember the story set up). They really enjoy being able to "read" it to me and I enjoy their enthusiasm about reading, so it's a win win. It really is a cute story.

I downloaded My Cat Is Fat for my 4 1/2 yr old who is just learning his letters and sounds. This is a great book, because the words are repetitive, such as "that is not my cat." It also has cute, engaging, and even silly pictures of animals that are not a fat cat. This is rapidly turning into a favorite!

My daughter loves this book. It is simple, with lots of repetition, which she loves. Very simple pictures and bright white background make the animals and little boy stand out when we read it on the kindle! A cute book!

My kids seemed to enjoy it for the most part but I can normally tell when the book is a real favorite because they'll asking me to read it again soon after. They haven't asked since. I thought it was just okay.

In the fall of 1871, while the country was reeling from the effects of the Civil War, a choir of former slaves and freedmen took to the road to raise money for their school, Fisk University, which was near financial collapse. Under the direction of George White, a white missionary who was Fisk's treasurer and self-appointed choirmaster, the group traveled north, performing Negro spirituals. At first they encountered only ridicule, prejudice and physical hardship, and the venture seemed so surely headed for disaster that one alarmed father called his daughter home. But when the remaining singers reached New York City, the flamboyant abolitionist preacher Henry Ward Beecher took up their cause, and the Jubilee Singers began to enjoy stupendous success. They traveled throughout the eastern U.S. and Europe, performing in churches, concert halls and the homes of the elite, astonishing audiences with moving renditions of plantation hymns, which most whites had never heard before. Ward (Our Bones Are Scattered) describes the Singers' three grueling tours, providing intimate portraits of each member of the group as well as their famous patrons and the besieged administrators and teachers back home at Fisk. In the process, he creates a vivid picture of the plight of blacks during and after the Civil War and shows how deeply whites opposed education for Negroes. At times, Ward's history may strike readers as overly detailed, but exhaustive factual accounts are relieved by quotations from the singers' own eloquently recorded impressions. The book is a fascinating tribute to a group of enterprising young men and women whose dignity and courage Ward calls "a constellation in the dark midnight from which they rose." Adult/High School-An incredible story of perseverance, courage, and determination. Established in the wake of the Civil War with a mission to teach emancipated slaves to read and write, Fisk University found it difficult to collect tuition from its desperately poor students. In 1871, needing to raise money to keep the school alive and operating, Fisk's treasurer and choirmaster, George White, organized a group of singers who would tour the eastern United States and, later, Europe. These nine students, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, took the music of black America and, in particular, the spiritual, to people of all different backgrounds, from queens to Supreme Court Justices to the common man. However, their efforts, and their success, did not come without a price. The singers faced heart-wrenching discrimination and, in some cases, such poor physical conditions that their health and voices were greatly compromised. Ward has done a wonderful job of relaying the events of the times and the history of the Jubilee Singers. Excellent resource for a very important time in American history. Highly recommended!

This is a fantastic book! I rarely read a book of this length (400+ pages), but I had to MAKE myself lay it down and go to other things I needed to do. The condition was excellent and it arrived in good time.

Author Andrew Ward presents a very informative telling of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. He does so with an impressive use of personal writings from the students, various administrators, and other individuals that hosted or otherwise interacted with the group. Reading about the singers' experiences through the participants' own words made for a greater degree of empathy and understanding. With that said, there are many names to keep track of, and some passages had so much detail I had to read paragraphs more than once. In the end, the read was well worth the time and I came away impressed that - given the times and resources - such an endeavor as the Fisk Jubilee Singers was even attempted, let alone successful.For me, the take-sways included learning more about Professor George White (the group's director), General Fisk (didn't know he was white), the purpose of the Freedman schools, the role of the American Missionary Association, and the lives of the students before, during, and after their time at Fisk (there's enough story lines to produce a great movie). The chapter notes and end sources were also very informative.Very vivid and humanizing telling of one of the better known events in African American history, as well as music history.

As other reviewers have said, the story of the Jubilee Singers is a very fascinating and important one that deserves to be told. Ward's book is well-researched, and includes a lot of detail on background information and concert-by-concert travelogue of the singers. As far as I can find out, this is the only place where you can get a history of the Jubilees in more than a few paragraphs.However, Ward doesn't tell it very well. The reading gets tedious and slow almost from the very beginning. Ward has a tendency to get sidetracked by tangential information, and his habit of breaking up large quotes between a paragraph and an indented block is annoying. Although he tries to provide personal information, there is very little emotion in the telling of such an emotional story.Another thing--if you are expecting, as I was, a study of the Jubilees' music, you will be disappointed. Ward states in the introduction that he is not a musicologist and his intent is not to chronicle the history or influence of slave music. He is true to his word. Very little is said about the actual music, except that it had the power to move audiences. Finally, after 400 pages, he talks about the Jubilees' influence on later music for a page or two. But this is the story of the singers, not the music, and their struggle to present their heritage in song and to preserve their school.

Once again the influence of African-American Culture takes center stage in the cultural development of America. It was these young and very naive band of singers, that forever altered the course of music in America. Bringing to the world, a genre of music that was(is) able to hold the audience in complete awe. However, when prodded, he’s been known to draw pretty much anything else. Daniel currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with his beautiful wife and his equally beautiful son. This book is adorable and my son loves it!

Cute book but was a little disappointed that there were a few black marks on the cover.

It’s always a joy to read a book that appeals to both kids and adults and “When Your Llama Needs a Haircut” does that! Simultaneously sweet and humorous, the story will tickle kids’ funny bones and possibly make them re-think the next time they have a tantrum about getting tidied up for a class photo. It will also bring back memories for adults from when they were little themselves and resisting grooming and haircuts (ah, the classic bowl cut…). And, honestly, who doesn’t love llamas?Daniel Wiseman’s illustrations--bold line drawings paired with a soothing, slightly retro palette--have a fun, quirky feel that complements Susanna Hill’s amusing text. I love that the little kid is a person of color with hair as distinctive as the llama’s.The story has the right level of exuberance that lends itself well to library story time, yet is just calm enough to be suitable for bedtime reading, too. The $7.99 list price is an absolute deal for this sturdy book that is sure to become a favorite for many kids.

When I found out my friend, author Susanna Leonard Hill, was releasing a new series of board books, I offered to review one. My friends know I'm not likely to give a favorable BOOK NOOK REVIEW unless I sincerely like the book I've been given. The day WHEN YOUR LLAMA NEEDS A HAIRCUT came in the mail, I was having a very rough time at work. I thought I would give Susanna's book a quick read and then delve deeper into it at a later time. I found myself actually chuckling out loud at some of the adorable illustrations Daniel Wiseman created to compliment Susanna's cute story, like this one...It brougt me back to the days of my own youth when I tried wearing a perm myself, as well as those days of trying to tame my own son's curly locks. It is also written in a similar vein as author Laura Numeroff's "If You Give..." series which makes WHEN YOUR LLAMA NEEDS A HAIRCUT a very enjoyable read. I want to read other books in the series like WHEN YOUR LION NEEDS A BATH and WHEN YOUR ELEPHANT HAS THE SNIFFLES.Young readers will laugh at the whimsical artwork and parents will find their own little ones asking to hear this delightful story "just one more time!" A great addition to any home library...

I love Susanna Leonard Hill's books. This one, like all her boardbooks in this series, is hilarious:"When your llama needs a haircut, you have to be a little bit tricky. Llamas usually think their hair looks just fine." This text is paired with an illustration of the lama with flowers and twigs stuck in his hair.I especially enjoyed the pages where the type of haircut for the llama is debated. My son laughed out loud at the perm picture. This is great book to read just for fun, or also to get your child thinking about his or her next haircut. It's a great read aloud, with beautifully expressive illustrations.

Ms. Hill's newest story is one of her best (but then, every single book she writes is her best). The hilarious story of the llama and all those hairstyles. What little one would not love this story? Ms. Hill's writing is the​ best I have ever seen. She connects with the children, and each child feels like she wrote the story just for them. The illustrations are funny and so cute. Will the child persuade his llama to get the haircut? You have to read it to find out. You will read it again and again and again.
