Farewell, Titanic: Her Final Legacy

From the Inside Flap

The Titanic was the biggest, most luxurious passenger ship the world had ever seen. The ads proclaimed it to be unsinkable. When it sank in April 1912 after hitting an iceberg, killing more than 1,500 people, the world was forever changed, and we have been spellbound ever since. Now, a century later, the Titanic is about to disappear forever: its infrastructure will finally collapse in the next few years. In this book, scientist and New York Times Bestselling writer Charles Pellegrino offers what may be our last opportunity to see the ship before it is lost to the sea for eternity. In Farewell, Titanic, world-renowned Titanic expert Pellegrino re-creates the great ship’s final hours in stunning detail, clears up several key mysteries about what actually happened, and reveals new information about how and why the ship went under so quickly. This is probably the last book that could have been written while Titanic survivors were still alive, and in Farewell, Titanic, Pellegrino draws on survivors’ firsthand stories of the tragedy as well as evidence he and others have collected during their deep-sea explorations of the ship’s remains in the last twenty-five years. Together, these sources create a riveting account of the intensely dramatic moments before and after the collision and of the aftermath.Farewell, Titanic also goes far beyond the nightmarish catastrophe to draw connections between the loss of more than 1,500 souls and some of the tragedies of our won era. Drawing on the author’s personal story, the book examines with rare sensitivity and immediacy the cautionary scientific and poignant spiritual lessons of disaster. Filled with dozens of extraordinary original color photos of the great ship, Farewell, Titanic offers compelling reading for anyone who is fascinated by forensic maritime science or who is simply moved by the timeless drama of history’s most legendary shipwreck.

This was a sensational book though it is very difficult to describe. The impetus for this book was the exploration of the doomed ship Titanic and the relatively new field of deep sea anthropology, but it is not a purely science based in the traditional sense. To tell the story of the current state of the Titanic the author has woven a story that blends past with present and fact with some degree of speculation and questions much of what had and has been held as true in the scientific world given new evidence that contradicts and baffles. If you are interested in the current state of the Titanic resting 2 1/2 miles deep in the murky and forbidding waters of the North Atlantic and what those remains reveal, this is the book to read.Since its discovery deep beneath the Atlantic's surface, subsequent explorations have revealed that the Titanic's wreck is quickly deteriorating and in a matter of years will be gone. To scientists, the mysteries that the Titanic holds defy a lot of previously held theories about the oceans, including environmental changes. In a sense the Titanic has become a deep sea reef that is home to strange varieties of sea life. The wreck also has managed to yield an enormous amount of information regarding what actually happened on April 14, 1912. Between a copious amount of information collected from interviews with survivors and their descendents, information collected from the debris fields, and logical interpolation of all the evidence, the fateful encounter with an iceberg through a debris field of icebergs is recreated in scientific detail peppered with the reality that there might have been things that could have delayed the ship's quick decline and sinking.Amid all the scientific detail remains the reality that hundreds of human beings died either from exposure in the frozen sea or in the bowels of the Titanic. Within the factual accounts of the sinking are human stories of loss that are poignant and heartbreaking and not just restricted to the sinking. The narrative tells its reader how the Titanic continued to claim victims even decades after the sinking. This book contains pictures of the Titanic in its current state of decay. I also illustrates the amount of deterioration that has occurred since it was first discovered and subsequent explorations. Also contained are maps of the debris fields and wreck and a projection of deterioration based on current data. While admittedly I liked the detailed information concerning the sinking and its aftermath in regard to the event itself and its passengers, I was surprised that I was not only able to understand and appreciate all the scientic information provided but actually like it. It was fascinating and thought provoking. The author's discourse of the creation of icebergs was amazing. Ultimately it imbued me with a sense that when man challenges nature, nature will always win.The most disturbing part of this book centered on some of the discoveries found which related to human life. Fragments of clothing, personal items, and what bothered me the most, fragments of human bone. The author speaks of the Titanic as a sacred place. In the process of exploration, often a heavy depression would overcome the crew. As I read this book I experienced the same feeling. This was a remarkable book that managed to integrate a large number of Titanic related topics in one concise and thorough volume.

Another great installment from Charles Pellegrino. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I felt the narration became a bit convoluted and hard to follow in some of the "World Trade Center" chapters. That aside, the chapters about Titanic were beautifully and poignantly written. I've been an avid reader of Titanic books since a very young age and have over a hundred in my "library" and Pellegrino still managed to present new and fascinating information. He is able to draw you in and make you feel the past in a way that makes it alive. Truly, a must read for any who loves Titanic.

When the author is writing about the Titanic, it's a wonderful book. When he's writing about his personal life, 9/11, and gets too technical about the ocean (that has nothing to do with the Titanic) I DON'T CARE! If you talk about the organisms that are eating away at her, that's fine, I want to learn all about those organisms. Organisms that are in another ocean and have no relevance to the Titanic makes me want to fall asleep. He is obviously a very smart and well educated man. I just wish he would not have veered off the subject.

Like all of Pellegrino's books, this too is fascinating reading. One would think that everything has been alrady said anouty the Titanic, but Pellegtino manages to prove this idea wrong.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those who are still fascinated by the sinking of the Titanic. This book was extremely well-written, well-researched and very thought-provoking.

I just could not put this book down. What a read!!!!! In fact, it read just like a movie. It was so sad reading how the majority of the passengers sank with the Titanic, because some of the staff was more concerned with class rather than saving lives. What a shame!

To come across a decent, well remembered story about the RMS Titanic is sometimes harder to come across than one may think. This book is excellent though, showcases wonderful photographs and gives up-to-date information on the liner. It has become another treasured item in my Titanic library. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's mind and heart is captured by the tragic tale of the beloved 100 year old Queen of the Ocean and Pride of the White Star Line. You'll read this book and not forget it.

I have always enjoyed Dr. Pellegrino's books, and this is one of his best. As usual, a delightful read, full of facts about this fascinating ship and its passengers. As usual with his _Titanic_ books, he goes from present day back to to the night of the sinking, bringing a poignant immediacy to a long ago tragedy, fitting it into the latter-day catrostrophy of 9/11 and its aftermath.
