David Attenborough's book JOURNEYS TO THE PAST is aptly named. Reading it is an enthralling trek back in time. He headed expeditions to New Guinea, Madagascar, etc. when sections of these huge islands were still largely primitive (between 1954 and 1964).He is not only a daring naturalist and adventurer, but a first-rate writer. He transforms what could be dry documentary coverage (of his quests for surviving ancient rituals and exotic fauna) into vivid and often gripping narrative. For example, his chapter on the land divers of Pentecost, who perform in a kind of Olympian sky-jumping ceremony, is the most fascinating account of a bizaare tribal ritual that I have ever read. It makes our modern "extreme" sports seem utterly tame by comparison. Attenborough's chapter "Cargo Cult" is a shocking and enlightening glimpse of the affects of the European culture invasion in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Figi and New Caledonia. This book has my highest recommendation.

Adorable Book for baby geeks! Great illustrations, colorful pages. A good mix of geek culture from books, movies, games and more. My 1 year old likes it but its more for the parents.

I was THRILLED with the Doctor Who references...but if you like Sherlock, Hunger Games, Star Trek, Star Wars, tabletop or MMO gaming, Firefly, Heros, Monsters, general science or math theories...this book is FOR YOU.My son has been interested in this book for well over a year, and he's 2.5 yrs old now. He knows a ton of the pictures and can tell you what they are. He has trouble saying "Fibonacci Sequence" but has "alternate reality" down pat. I'm one proud nerd mama!

This book is a checklist, a great checklist for anyone doing analysis on industries or companies. Porter is a hard to miss if you work in this area, so you might as well get through this book, and you'll know what everyone is talking about, and you'll also get a good framework that ensures that your analysis doesn't skip important points.Reading Art of War and those kinds of books gives you another kind of strategy, which is very useful in combination with the things Porter gives you. Basically, I think Porter has done a great job of "summarizing" the strategy-process, and this is why the book is fo famous, and it is also why I give it 4 and not 5 stars. With sound theory and thorough work you will get the same insights as with Porters framework, and you will also be better equipped to deal with the peculiarities in every situation. Nevertheless, many peole don't have time/the interest for more than a summary, so for them this book is great.
