While working at a daycare, I was searching for ways to break up the monotony of winter for our school aged children. Celebrating the Chinese New Year seemed like an obvious choice except for one problem - I know very little about the Chinese New Year and Chinese culture. So, I went to Amazon after not being able to find any suitable references at the local book store. I found this book which had gotten pretty good reviews.The book is a great reference with wonderful craft ideas. The children especially enjoyed making the drum noise makers.

Easy read, interesting facts for any parent or pre-K, or elementary teacher to use in classroom lesson re: Chinese New Year. I shared this book with my son's OT, (Occupational Therapist), and she used some of the activities with her clients. We also shared this book with a group of moms at an Integrated Play Group, (Cross-aged peers, Typically Developing and Special Needs kids). Great book!

I bought this book because I didn't know much about the traditions associated with Chinese New Year. I feel it gave me a good overview and was written and illustrated in such a way that children could really enjoy learning about the celebration.

Bought this for small grandchildren for the Chinese New Year,was too advanced for their ages and is more for older children.Will keep it for them for when they get older.

Bought to share with my 5 year old granddaughter who's preschool class was celebrating the Chinese New Year. She is not of Asian descent so it helped her to share a little in her classmate's family celebration. She enjoyed this book very much

This is one of the Oxford Portraits series that brags that their books are "based on the most recent scholarship [and] they draw heavily on primary sources." Unfortunately, Oxford does not see fit to include footnotes or a bibliography, at least not in this example. Yes, it is a small book aimed a high school level, but the absence of sources is nonetheless inexcusable and would add few additional pages.Dorothea Dix was an extraordinary woman in some regards but a strange one in others. She certainly was a living contradiction in moral attitudes. She fought tenaciously for the mentally ill yet despised the Irish and was at best indifferent to slavery. Muckenhoupt's portrait of Dix is a bit more positive than reality requires. Dix was a difficult person to like and had difficulty working within a system. Give the book to your high schooler, though. It's worth their reading, although I doubt the writing style will excite them. Then get a more extensive biography.

I found the book to be fairly revealing, giving a good background to Dixs' motivations as well as an excellent overview of her accomplishments.
