Multiplying Missional Leaders

Leadership is one of the most over-used and overwrought topics in Christian ministry today. Yet for all the books, blogs and conferences, there are two staggering realities we must come to grips with: First, while most churches believe they have leadership development programs, in actuality, they have programs that recruit and train volunteers, not leaders. A volunteer is someone who executes someone else’s vision. A leader is someone with a vision of their own. In truth, there are often only a few leaders in the average church and everyone else are simply executing their vision. It’s the genius with a thousand helpers.

Perhaps more troubling, though, is that our development programs are not about releasing leaders to the missional frontier, but volunteers keeping the machine of the church running. To be sure, we should attend to the organization of the church, for it is a significant thing when the scattered church gathers. But as the Church stares precipitous decline in the face—as we look to re-embrace the missio Dei—we must learn again the art that Jesus mastered: the task of multiplying missional leaders and releasing them to the cracks and crevices of society where there is little-to-no Kingdom presence.

People often like quippy sayings like, “We want to be known more for our sending capacity than our seating capacity.” This book is about how that can become a reality in your community.

Mike Breen writes about the need for missional leaders and about why churches often struggle to create them. He writes convictingly about church cultures that are rife with consumerism and celebrity and competitiveness. And, if we're honest, we can see echoes of those trends in our own ministries. I was particularly struck by this idea: "The means you use to attract people to you are usually the means you must use to keep them" (Kindle Loc 901).Breen then goes on to write about the character and the competencies needed for people to be missional leaders. These sections left me wishing for more. I'd love to hear more about how Breen develops character and how he trains his missional leaders in the necessary competencies. This was a real strength in Steve Saccone's book Protégé. Perhaps this is something that Breen will write more about in the future. The most challenging and, for me, most helpful section of the book was the 5 Capitals section. In it, Breen writes about 5 forms of capital that missional leaders need:* Spiritual capital* Relational capital* Physical capital* Intellectual capital* Financial capitalBreen argues convincingly that all 5 are important and that the list goes down in descending importance. In other words, physical capital is more important that intellectual capital. All of your intellectual resources will do you know good if you are burned out and exhausted. In my experience, most of the leadership training given to potential missional leaders trends heavy on increasing their intellectual capital and hardly ever touches on the other forms of capital. What will it profit a movement if we raise up leaders who know what do do but lack the strength and depth to do it?One last thing: throughout the book, Breen asks phenomenal and searching questions. I'll be reflecting on these questions for a while. They alone are worth the price of the book.I would definitely recommend reading Multiplying Missional Leaders, but would caution you: read this book only if you are willing to act on what you learn. It's all too easy to read books like these and do nothing with them, to feel like reading is the same as doing. Don't do it!

Many pastors are trying to motivate the churches they lead to express "love and good works," and would love to see a movement of discipleship and mission take off in their city. So why doesn't it happen more often? One of the main problems for many pastors is that the expression of the Body of Christ they lead doesn't have a skeletal structure of leaders within it, so it's more like a "Blob of Christ" that mostly just sits there. The best you can do is poke it with a stick (sermon) and hope for some kind of response, but you'll never be able to build a movement unless you get a skeletal structure of missional leaders in place, so the Body of Christ can stand up and work. You can't build a movement without lots of leaders. This is the basic idea behind Mike Breen's upcoming book Multiplying Missional Leaders. This book is a phenomenal resource for pastors and leaders. It has a great mix of big-picture strategic insights as well as practical, on-the-ground tactical suggestions for raising up leaders. Because I've known Mike for a few years, I have been practicing a lot of this stuff in my own ministry, and I can say that it has borne a lot of good fruit so far. Mike bridges an important gap I've seen between those who like elegantly-expressed missional theology and those who like to "get stuff done." Mike knows how to do both, and it's really refreshing.Like Building a Discipling Culture (to which it makes a great follow-up book), it reads a bit like a reference manual. The content is dense and meaty, and probably deserves to read a few times. I've heard Mike teach this content several times, and I still seem to get some new insight every time I hear or read it.

The book was content-heavy. Not a difficult read, but I did need more breaks than when I read a couple of other Ehrman's books, such as, Misquoting Jesus and How Jesus Became God. Sometimes books have what I call, "filler" in them that take up your time but have no meaningful content. This book had no "filler". It was jam-packed with information about the different sects of Christianity--Ebionites, Marcionites, Gnostics, etc... It explained what each Church Father believed was the "right" way to view Jesus' divinity and what each one of them considered heretical. The pacing of the book was steady and maintained my interest all the way to the end. Excellent book.

Excellent overview of the early Cristianities---proto-orthodox and its many heretical cousins.I've read 10+ Ehrman books, another 10+ historical/critical bible studies and dozens of pieces of atheist literature. I think those reads assisted me in fully enjoying and understanding this book; my previous reading experiences "greased the rails" for this book. Perhaps you won't need that assist, but I'm glad I had it.Again, this is MANDATORY reading for a person who wants the true story, rather than faith's cockeyed version.Ehrman doesn't say it, but he certainly suggests that the following idea is true: Today, no one practices the religion practiced by Jesus, and Jesus never practiced any of the religions practiced today. Christians today are generally clueless regards their roots, but through no fault of Ehrman's. He cannot force people to read well-researched and authoritative texts.Score another point for Ehrman on the playing field of religious research geared toward the common man. Please write another, while I track down the dozen-or-so Ehrman books I've yet to read.Thank you, Bart.

I saw this book recommended by Matt Dillahunty of The Atheist Experience. It's a well written book, unbiased and doesn't come across as trying to undermine Christianity. Instead, it gives voice to early Christian groups that were sincere and trying to understand Jesus' messageb but who had very different interpretations than the group that formed the new testament.I'm no longer Christian, and the book helped me to see the early Christian groups in a more understanding and positive light , as they sincerely looked to grasp and interpret the teachings associated with Jesus. I found it very helpful to see that the interpretations and theology that's in the new testament are just one group's take on things. Other sincere (and very sizable) early Christian groups had very different interpretations based on the same teachings from Jesus. These groups were reframed by the group that won as small in size and representing some wild, heretical perspective; this book corrects this and shows the truth. Interestingly, I thought of how my rejection of what's in the new testament may very well be rejection of a specific group's misinterpretation of Jesus & that I could find alignment with other early Christian groups. It also served to resolve a question of mine with respect to the historicity of Jesus (so many different and sincere groups with different interpretations and their own Scriptures make me fall squarely on the view that Jesus was a historical figure).

For any one interested in the history, authenticity of the New Testament books, this is a must reading. The author successfully makes the reading interesting and, more importantly, very readable. There are occasions of repetitiveness but aside from that I highly recommend the book but it needs to be approached with a great deal of openness and an absolute lack of religious bias. This is not a book for the dogmatically religious person for whom any writing that deviates from a perceived perspective is, a priori, false and inaccurate. The author gave me a wonderful sense of the inner conflicts and dynamics that early Christianity had to endure before becoming the standard and established religious dogma. It also gives an invaluable perspective on the various prejudices and struggles that religious leaders had to encounter in order to retain their views of historical truths as they interpreted the existing documents at the time. I personally could not put the down and was enthralled by it. Highly recommended.

One of Ehrman’s best, I think. Thought-provoking and speculative, yet grounded, this book explores alternative early Christianities before “Proto-Orthodox Christianity” won the battle and shoved the rest aside. You’ll read about the Ebionites, the Marcionites, Gnosticism, and the evolving orthodox church. Ehrman puts all on even ground so that each has an equal voice, because recent discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls have proven just how diverse Christian practices really were back in the first and second centuries.Ehrman doesn’t mince words when he discusses the “forgeries” both in and out of the Bible, so do be aware the topic gets plenty of ink. This does lead to some interesting conversation, though. The Secret Gospel of Mark, the Pastoral letters in Paul’s name, and the Gospel of Thomas come under scrutiny. Small wonder that in the battle for supremacy between the various Christian branches, the claim for apostolic succession played a central role. Quickly in orthodox church tradition, our 27 books of the New Testament are all tied directly to the apostles or companions, while other Christian writings are denounced as inauthentic. So what are the repercussions of the victory of proto-orthodox Christianity? How has our world been shaped by this? Ehrman feels the significance of this victory can scarcely be overstated. Christianity would surely have no doctrine of Christ as both fully divine and human, and of course no Trinitarian doctrine. But the effects would have been felt far further than Christian debates, and the book’s final chapter left me with much to think about.Definitely recommended.Oxford University Press, © 2003, 294 pagesISBN: 0-19-514183-0

I am so excited , Struck is out of this world insanely good. This by far has to be one of my new all time favorite YA stories, that had me so immersed and invested in the characters and story and really soars in all the right way. First of all the main character Ethan is a force of nature that exudes so much charisma, wit, compassion. He is a complex character that draws you in and grabs a hold with such a commanding presence. I can go on and on but I absolutely loved everything about him, flaws and all, in fact his flaws are among his greatest strengths. The premise is intriguing and clever. Taking kids and unlocking super human abilities by having them "Stuck" by lightning to unlock the abilities. These abilities can manifest different in different children. When Ethan is Struck he wakes up in a strange secret gov't funded high-rise in NYC. It is here he learns of others that have been Struck, and it is here that he meets Adam, the boy Ethan is drawn to, and the other teens occupying the tower,Esther, Sierra , K, Laurel, and Tomas . All of these characters are written so richly and full of colorful traits. All posses different abilities, and Adam, who we come to find was the first who was experimented on by his own father, who is the strongest of them possessing multiple abilities that for him may come with a huge cost. The beautiful romance that develops with Adam and Ethan is so beautifully heart warming, and heart breaking at the same time. The series of events that these young superheros go thru to come together and save each other is full of adrenaline pumping sequences that kept me on the edge of my seat. It is full of revelations that are shocking that will definitely feel like a gut punch. Ultimately the story will leave you wanting like me the follow up ASAP. This first book of the Lightning Project is awesome and is filled with such great writing and care put into the characters that you won't be able to get them or this story out of your head!

I’ve never made a secret of my love for comics and super-heroes. So, if there’s a book available for review that centers around characters with super powers, I have a tendency to jump on it. Bonus points if it’s the first book in a series.“Struck”…struck me (see what I did there? Ha!) Ethan is your typical emo angsty kid. He’s an angry computer hacker who takes great joy in digging up dirt on others, particularly those in power, and exposing them for the garbage they are. He gains super-powers through a not-so accident, and is kidnapped and taken to a literal tower. There, he meets the rest of the diverse cast of kids that have been through the same process, all of whom have developed different powers. Among them is Adam, your typical, All-American good boy. Adam’s brightness is a perfect counter to Ethan’s angst.I loved most of the writing in this book. You get a clear picture of how Ethan views the world, what his thought processes are, and why he does what he does. His inner-monologue is pitch-perfect for someone his age. But, much like the world of super-heroes and villains, everything can’t be roses and sunshine. The book is told almost exclusively in first person, from Ethan’s point of view, which is a perfect introduction to this world. However, at various points in the book, we would switch points of view. This, in and of itself, wouldn’t have been a problem. However, we also switch from first-person to third-person. Sometimes mid-chapter. The first time it happened, I had to go back and reread the section leading up to it, just to be sure I hadn’t misread. It happens sporadically through out the book, sometimes mid-chapter. I really wished it hadn’t happened, because it had a tendency to pull me out of the book, re-calibrate my brain, and dive back in. I understand why it was done, but wish the author had found a different way to tell those points of few. Because I really, really did love the book, besides that issue.Oh, and I totally saw Wesley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I was reading Jones. Just sayin’

Wow! That was fun! I don't get to read a lot of LGBT+ YA books, but this one was really good. Warning: this book is definitely going to be part of a series, and I have high hopes that it will continue to be this entertaining. The worst part about reading the first book in a series when it is first released, is that you have to wait for the next installment.Victoria Kinnaird is a new author for me, but I am definitely impressed with her creativity. I have to be honest; I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about reading a book about teenage superheroes. But, Ethan, one of the MCs, was so snarky and just in your face; and Adam was too precious... I could describe the whole team, but you can find out for yourself when you read this book. It's been a while since a plotline has surprised me, but this one has a twist I truly wasn't expecting. In hindsight, I probably should have seen it coming, but it caught me completely unaware. There was some angst, but it wasn't overwhelming. The love story was super sweet, but bittersweet for the moment. There is nothing explicit, but there is a fade to dark scene, and a lot of implied sexy times. There is some cursing, but again, I am not a good judge of what is appropriate for YA books. I'm confident that my ten year old daughter has heard everything said in the book on the playground, so there's that.If you're looking for a fun Sci-fi type superhero group of a very diverse group of friends who do the right thing, even if they don't like it, this is an awesome read. (And I know that was a really long, probably run on sentence...)Happy reading!* I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. *
