I have been "accumulating" soup cookbooks from Amazon and also eBay for a soup feast I am planning. One thing about buying books online, you don't enjoy that ability to leaf through them and see if they really appeal so the reviewer information is really helpful. So, with a stack of soup books on hand, I will say that this one and New England Soup Factory Cookbook: More Than 100 Recipes from the Nation's Best Purveyor of Fine Soup (Marjorie Druker, Clara Silverstein)[nice but a tad expensive] are the standouts for the appeal of therecipes, photos (a must), and general organization. Once you get too many books (I think I'm there!), the recipes start repeating and it's difficult to find anything new. This is a small compact book but I love the photos and the pages on "variations" for each recipe. These variations are how they cram 500 recipes in such a small volume! I would say this book is a great resource and priced fairly for what it provides to readers.

I purchased this book looking for a source for my cold weather favorite.... soups. I browsed through amazon's offerings of soup cookbooks and came across this one. When it arrived, I immediately dove in and was very pleasantly suprised. Many of the recipies are tried and true so I don't need to go over them. What I liked most about this book was that it brought a number of my favorite recipies together in one spot... except for Tuscan Bean Soup, which is sadly missing from a lot of these type cookbooks. What I didn't like was the variety included things I know I will never try, but that's with almost every cookbook. But the ratio was about 50/50. Not bad actually for a soup cookbook.Between the chapters are pages that give you variations for recipies in the previous chapter, handy for the newer cooks and gives thought to more seasoned cooks. There are some, what I consider to be, 'exotic' ingredients... things you wouldn't normally have around the house... but that may be just my house. However, that annoyed me... especially the seafood recipies. Not that I don't like seafood... I just don't see a lot of seafood soups other than chowders in my life and feel there could have been more heartier fare in their place.Either way, this little book is worth it's price indeed. One of the few cookbooks that will last in my library. I do recommend it to those looking for a collection of soup recipies all in one spot.

the book itself is ok, its small and square, the recipes inside are wayout kind I will probably never ever make, was looking for something different. its not a bad book, just not for me. its not a bad book, just not for me, not too many ordinary wanted recipes, OK if your looking for smoked haddock & sugar snap pea soup or spicy crab & coconut soup, yuk

my boyfriend loves hearty, nutritious soups but most cookbooks only have creamy or heavy soups... we got this book last week and have already tried a couple of recipes, this is a must have for the kitchen! - book is small and easy to read, first few pages explains everything from ingredients needed for the base of the soups, garnishing and condiments, to the measurement and cooking tools needed to execute the recipes... also has variations after each chapter, for instance it'll tell you about a lamb chop and couscus soup and at the end will tell you how to make it with chicken or vegetables if you are a vegetarian and what other ingredients to switch in the process... love it!

As other reviewers have complained, this book does not contain 500 soup recipes, it contains alterations of the recipes printed and these are supposedly new recipes making 500. My other complaint with the book is that many of the recipes are either too basic or too advanced. I will use this book but it will not even come close to as much as I used my other 'smaller' books. It's not a bad purchase if you are just starting making soups and don't really understand the basics of what mixes with what and how to slightly change recipes to create new ones. But for an experienced soup maker there are better books out there.

Got terrific recipes that are excellent and pretty easy. The collection of different soups is pretty right on for my household. The vichyssoise soup is my favorite. We have had it not and cold, and really loved it both ways. My granddaughter can't say the name but she just calls it "her"potato and bacon love it soup.

Nice Book. Not as large as I thought. I thought it was an 8x10 book, but much smaller. Nice color pictures but for 500 recipes, not many recipes jumped out at me. If I saw it in person, I probably wouldn't have purchased it for the price. Not a bad book, just not fantastic either. If you are a soup lover, many variations of soup.

The 500 soups provides 125 recipes for a variety of soups from everyday to exotic variations. Each of the 125 recipes has four minor variations that tweak the item into a different version by adding a new flavor profile. This is hands down the best cookbook in the series and provides excellent recipes for easy use. There are tons of great flavored soups that are easy to make from this book and may ones that are hearty enough to serve as a meal. This truly is an essential book for those who like to make soups.

I hate to do this but I could not finish this book. From the description it is about a mom who lives in Kansas and is struggling with anxiety and memory loss after a head injury. It hints that her husband is dangerous and a friend from her past returns. It also says it is similar to "The Woman in the Window". I felt like I was very misled by the description. This is a book about war. I do not read books about war, explosives, and descriptions of these things really bother me. One of the reasons I picked up this book is because the description says it takes place in Kansas where I live. Most of the book is set in Bosnia, Macedonia, Iraq and other countries with genocide and violence. I think a hint this in the description would be really helpful for this book to find the right audience. The cover has a quote "The perfect marriage leads to the perfect crime." Because of this, I was expecting a domestic thriller. I am feeling very misled.Thank you to NetGalley and Park Row Publishing for the free advanced reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.

Feelings of love, fear, and protectiveness make us human. When those feelings turn into paranoia and possessiveness, we become monsters. In Beautiful Bad, Annie Ward’s sophomore novel, we come to know three people who are driven by their fears and desire to protect those they love. Even seemingly minor characters are motivated by hopes to keep those near to them safe. In the beginning chapters of the novel, one narrator, Maddie, shares a list of her fears. They are largely anxieties, nightmares, and phobias we all share, ranging from terrorist attacks, marital disputes, the special vulnerability that is parenting small children, to fears that we are somehow not normal. The reader wants to reassure Maddie that there is absolutely nothing wrong with her because everyone worries about those things too. We all want to shield our dear ones from those that would harm them and from the ugliest parts of ourself. We all cover our scars and present a beautiful face to the world for the comfort of others. Beautiful Bad explores the the boundaries between reasonable cautiousness and insanity, where our sanctuaries become our prisons. In an expansive narrative spanning decades and continents, Beautiful Bad challenges the reader to think about how we love and allow ourselves to be loved, what makes us feel secure or threatened, who our heroes are and how those heroes can be wounded. It’s these bonds that connect a Midwestern housewife, an international relief worker, a British security officer, a police officer, a retired neighbor, an unconventional psychotherapist, and a 911 dispatcher in a well-crafted story that ends with a rollercoaster of unexpected revelations that will have the reader breathless for the final 50 pages. This book is a quick read and easy to follow notwithstanding a timeline that is not linear. It is witty and intelligently written with a carefully constructed foundation. The author effortlessly moves the reader between between various narrators, time periods, and countries in a narrative that will keep the reader guessing. The three main characters are unlike any most readers have encountered; they are complicated people in unimaginable circumstances but each has their own very passionate humanity that shows through by the end of the novel. The story has momentum that makes it hard to put down; you’ll want to read it at stop lights and the story will haunt you once the last pages are done.

This is a difficult book to review. I don't want to give anything away. You, the reader, should be able to read it without any idea what you are in for. Just like I did. Enjoy. It is a wonderful read.

A must read - I was engaged all the way through and very invested in all the principal characters. I am not a fan of characters or stories that are black and white - i.e. - these is the good guys and this those the bad guys - not the case here - everyone is flawed as we are in real life - I read this book in two days and could see the action unfolding in my mind the entire time...can't wait for the movie! Or Annie Ward's next book!

Such a great read. I devoured Beautiful Bad in virtually no time, and loved it from start to finish. Maddie is a anxiety ridden wife and mother. And Ian is her PTSD afflicted husband. What are their secrets and why caused Maddie’s disfiguring accident? Annie Ward has done a great job and I look forward to reading her work for years to come.

Full of suspense, dark thriller and hard to put down!

I could not put this book down, the characters came to life. The writer made you understand how the characters felt and looked at the world. The only part I was disappointed in was the ending, I felt there was more of the story to be told.

Twists and turns! Drama! Hard to put down! Yikes! I usually sleep on airplanes but I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished it quickly!

From Library Journal

Yaffe, a librarian, camper, and author of High Trails Cookery, offers more than 150 recipes for hikers seeking an alternative to the expensive, often boring, freeze-dried prepared meals that are sold in stores. Most of them are for dishes that are completely cooked at home and dried in an electric dehydrator (or an oven), then simply rehydrated with boiling water, requiring no further cooking at the campsite. There are also trail snacks and other no-cook recipes, as well as cookies, muffins, and other baked goods. Some of the recipes are vegetarian, while others offer vegetarian (or vegan) options. For larger collections and others where camping and hiking books are popular. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

The more adventurous camper will turn to Linda Yaffe's Backpack Gourmet. She offers fish jerky as well as the beef variety, and she leads her band of outdoorspersons into an elaborate world of breakfasts, snacks, and dinner dishes. She insists that complex-sounding dishes such as crab fettuccini and portobello curry need not be beyond the reach of the backwoodspeople. For the less sophisticated frontier cook, hot dog stew and peanut butter fudge make satisfying outdoor meals. There are also recipes for fruit leather and similar easily transportable snacks. She also offers guidelines on choosing cooking equipment for campers and on techniques for ensuring all-important freshwater supplies in the backcountry. The marketing for this book is somewhat deceptive. After reading the description, and even scanning the recipe list, I had no idea that this was primarily a vegetarian cookbook. I was very surprised upon receiving it to find that only a handful of the recipes feature meat in any way.Now I know most backpackers don't do elaborate breakfasts, so I didn't expect much there besides cold cereals, etc., but even in the chapter on pasta dishes and casseroles, there was little for the omnivore. To give you some specifics, of the 50-odd recipes in the chapter, just over 60% are vegetarian, of which nearly a third are vegan. On top of that, of the recipes that do include meat, 80% are for seafood. Ugh. I don't expect every recipe to be to my taste, but throw me a bone, for goodness sake. At the very least, let me know up front what it is I'm going to be getting. The story's the same in the chapter on soups and stews.Of the dozens of books I've ordered from Amazon over the years, I'm seriously considering returning this one.

And I am not even a backpacker. In fact, I stay as far away from the woods and mountains and trails as I can possibly get. If there is not a Starbucks within shouting distance, I am just lost, city girl that I am.That said, I totally am a prepper-ish type, and this book is awesome for that. Prepared dehydrated meals that you can purchase come from God knows where and contain God knows what. If you prepare and dehydrate your meals yourself, you have much more control over the ingredients.I tried a few of the recipes for bars and veggies, and all were just fine. I have stocked some things in the freezer and some in glass jars in the pantry...have been pleased and the kids even ate the stuff, which is the deciding factor for me.What I unfortunately did NOT get to do, that I REALLY want to do, is try some of the complete meals (soups, stews, etc.), and dehydrate them myself. I do not think I have the right dehydrator for that. I have a home use Nesco type (the round kind) and I think to dehydrate liquid meals I need the pull out tray kind, and I have not yet purchased one. So bummer on that score, because I can't wait to try some, but i need to get a different dehydrator first.Overall, even if you keep yourself off the trails but still plan and prepare at home for when the apocalypse happens (heh), this is a great reference book.

So, my husband and I planned this big 10 week backpacking/camping road trip across the country. I really didn't want to eat the prepackaged-freeze dried-expensive-not so good tasting meals you can buy at REI or where ever because the trip was going to be so long and I figured we'd get tired of them real fast. And they're full of preservatives and/or salt. I bought this book a little to late and really only had time to make the meals, not try them out. I did taste them as I went along cooking but I never rehydrated one afterwards to taste and see if they were flavorful. I know it's a bad idea to test something in the backcountry but I had time constraints! Turns out, it didn't matter. The first night of backpacking in Teddy Roosevelt I cooked up the (I think it was called) Cowboy Pasta and it was good. It was really really good, as was every single meal after that. I think we tried 15 recipes all together and everyone turned out to be delicious. Whenever we met up with other campers they were jealous of our meals because most, if no all, were eating the same freeze-dried stuff. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This is the book I have been waiting for. I love to cook, I love to eat, and I love to backpack, and this book lets me enjoy all three. Previously, I was one of those backpackers who ate mac-n-cheese and Lipton noodles over and over and over. It was really boring, and I wasn't getting enough protein in my diet. Getting ready for our epic 4 month hike on the PCT this summer, I wanted to try food dehydrating, but I also needed a recipe book. After lots of online research I ordered this book and "Trail Food" by Alan Kesselheim. Kesselheim and Yaffe have completely different approaches, and I find Yaffe's approach far more user-friendly. You DO NOT want to mess with drying each food item separately and then trying to assemble them in the backcountry. You are tired, you are hungry. You do not want to spend lots of time messing with ten different little baggies and jars of spices and oils. Leave all of that at home. Yaffe's approach is simple and elegant, and I'm quite honestly shocked that more people don't do it this way: You make your soup, stew, pasta dish or casserole in the comfort of your home. The key is that you must keep the chunks of vegetables, etc. very small. You then spread the dish in thin layers on your dehydrator trays and let the dehydrator do all of the work. Just this weekend, we went backpacking and ran the true field test: rehydrating all of the foods that I had previously dehydrated. The results were impressive. Breakfast casseroles, delicious spaghetti for dinner, tuna and bruschetta spreads at lunch, and none of it had that preservative-laden flavor that store-bought foods are cursed with. The only two comments I would make where Yaffe didn't get it quite right are that I can't fit the whole dish into the dehydrator (if you only have four trays like I do), so we usually end up eating some of it for dinner (not a bad thing). The second thing is that her recommended drying times seem a bit too short. I've had to add an extra hour or two to many of the recipes, but again, this is not a big deal as I dry most of this stuff overnight anyway. If you are looking for a lightweight backpacking meal solution, you cannot live without this book!
