This review is for the 2019 version not the 2018 version.I own at least 30 DK Eyewitness travel guides. They are the only guides that I have used for the past 20 years. This 2019 version looks like it is a "knock-off" product from some third world publisher. The pages are printed on cheap paper and the entire book is of very poor quality. It reminds me of a book that someone threw together with xerox copies of another book. I am returning it immediately. I would give it zero stars if i could.The 2018 version meets the quality standard that I am used to.
This is a great, full color travel guide. As other reviews detail, it shows in detail the highlights of every area in Prague. If there is a major exhibit (like St. Vitus' Cathedral) it will have a full spread showing the cathedral and pointing out with an illustration what is there. That is what makes this book great to have. We carried it through the castle complex and it was helpful. I usually use it to review the night before we head to an area for an overview. I agree with another reviewer that this is a little to large to comfortable carry around with you everywhere. I would still get this, but also pick up the Lonely Planet POCKET Prague published in June of 2012. That little gem went everywhere with us and has a great map of each section of the city tagged with highlights and recommended restaurants. It is full color but so small that it can't have pictures of everything like this one does. I would comment that I read both Fodors and Frommers before my trip (library) and preferred both the DK travel guide and the Pocket Prague. They were ok for trip planning and what to expect. I also picked up Rick Steves 2012 edition for background, read it at the hotel and used ideas from it. No color and not what I needed to explain what I was seeing like DK's!
This is hands down the best guide book I've found to date. I'd purchased a few others that were either extremely small (for weight reasons?) and therefore hard to read, or else were satisfactory. When I opened the cover to this book, I was greeted with a colored map of the four "towns" that make up Prague. There are multiple colored illustrations and photos, and great side bars on interesting sites throughout the city. This book is very detailed, and very much worth the cost (which was fairly low since I bought a used copy). I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Prague. I will seek out other guide books by DK Eyewitness - this is now my standard for excellence in guidebooks.
As a knowledgable person of Prague, I know it still helps to have a large city map to view where buses & trams are going; cell phone maps can't provide the bigger picture or location of multiple areas of interest on a single view. Has sufficient detail of areas or items of interest w background and how to get to these places.
I've used the Eyewitness books for our last 2 trips to Europe and I absolutely love them! I've decided to choose the version (full or Top 10) depending on the amount of time we'll be visiting a city. For any trips that are 3 days or less, you can definitley get away with the Top 10 book - it boils everything down to the best choices/most popular things to do, and is much smaller and very easy to carry around with you. For our trip to Prague, I ended up buying both versions...we were in Prague for a week (half on business), but I found that after our first couple days, I was referring to the full guide more often to find places to visit and such. I would totally recommend the Eyewitness books!
DK Eyewitness covered a lot for this city. The only thing that I did not like was the amount of information on food. DK Eyewitness always disappoints me in this area. Prague is also know for it's beer and this book barely touched on that or the many places to go to drink. This city also has a lot of cheaper places to eat that was not mentioned. This publisher should also add in things that are not so touristy. This book was filled with mostly touristy places to see or things to do. If I could I would give this book 3.5 stars. I decided to go with 4 because this book did it's job.
Reading any guide from this publisher before to travel will make every site you visit feel like meeting an old friend.Rereading it on your return will prompt more memories than any photo you might chance to take or postcard you dropped a euro on.Buy it second hand if money is an issue.Give it to a good friend who takes a journey to your guide's locale-this makes a very thoughtful gift--but only if you really like your friend and are feeling especially generous.
Very helpful. Covers the areas of most tourists questions. Great tour book. Includes a pull out map. Provides history, which helped in advance of visiting the city, as well as traveler tips, amongst other info and recommendations.
