As an investigative reporter, Evan Ratliff deftly uncovered the dark organization of Paul Le Roux, a megalomaniac driven by crackbrained grandiosity and fueled by paranoia. Le Roux had created encryption code that the NSA could not break. He leveraged his technical brilliance to exploit ambiguities in the U.S. drug laws, and he enlisted thousands of legitimate pharmacies & doctors into a complex, opaque network. They prescribed millions of doses of painkillers as a result of Le Roux’s sophisticated and relentless email spam solicitation.Obsessed with power and greed, Le Roux used a twisted combination of financial incentives, psychological control and death threats to expand his empire into gold, illegal drugs and arms deals to rogue states. He ultimately ruled a vast empire ranging from North Korea to Somalia from his safe haven in the Philippines—where he controlled the police and judiciary.Ratliff weaves this journey into an incredible story. Just when you think it can’t get more bizarre, it does.

I was intrigued by this non-fiction story after reading the prologue, and indeed the first few chapters are riveting. Paul Leroux is a devious mastermind who helped fuel the opioid epidemic in the US. The way in which he skirted the laws and laundered his money were genius because it was almost legal. The author makes a very good case that had Leroux continued in that vein, instead of breaking all the way bad, he would have been a celebrated billionaire. This is a fast read, though, I read it over a weekend, and look forward to the TV documentary...some day.

This book has it all -- a brilliant criminal mastermind, a cast of sometimes-bumbling mercenaries, a dogged DEA agent, and a trail of blood that Ratliff follows from the Philippines to Israel to Brazil to a nondescript bureaucratic office in Minneapolis. Reads like a thriller, but it's all, unfortunately, totally true. A terrific book.

Perhaps scholarly and determined erudition best describe this manuscript of events so connected to one man's brilliance, corruption and savagery as they evolve into years of ruthless dominion over relentless crimes from the allure of power, wealth and sex.No, you won't find any quotes from the likes of Ben Franklin or Billy Graham in these pages. Author Evan Ratliff recounts his four years of inquiry and source materials from individuals on six continents in nearly 400 pages of events that "really happened". Events such as drug and gun running, murders for vengeance and for hire, extortion for pecuniary needs, and much more where page turning becomes another adventure into human greed and other familiar receptacles.A sociopath is defined as one lacking conscience with attendant defective mental or emotional disturbances. Was the protagonist and central character in The Mastermind, Paul Leroux, sociopathic in his daily routines? Readers will likely consider this a rhetorical question as they absorb the sequences in these chapters.Umbriago

I have enjoyed Evan Ratliff on the Longform podcast, so before this book came out I suggested my local library purchase it, and they did. I borrowed it immediately and read it over a weekend; engrossed enough to ignore all of my typical weekend activities. It is a bonkers story, well researched and well presented. It's good enough that I decided to buy the book to support the author, and read it again. I look forward to the film version, and whatever else Mr. Ratliff produces in the future. You should buy this book.

Ratliiff’s fabulous reporting and accessible writing has resulted in a truth is stranger than fiction crime tale that will keep you engrossed to the very end.

Le Roux a/k/a "The Mastermind" is basically a Bond villain, and this book unfolds like a great espionage/crime thriller. It's hard to believe this is real life, but the author obviously spent many hours researching the story to accurately capture every detail. Definitely worth a read, for fiction and nonfiction fans alike.

This is one of THE best books I have ever read. Wonderfully written, and you just will not believe some of what you read, but it's true! I could not put this book down. Paul Le Roux is a true monster, as evil as they come. But this book. You won't regret it!

Excellent! The author writes in such a way as to make academic material read like a novel. Fascinating facts about the city of Philadelphia and the people who lived there when the country was young.

This book was in a bookshelf of a home I was visiting and I picked it out because I liked the cover and knew nothing about the subject. This is a very detailed and profoundly well considered analysis of public health issues in colonial Philidelphia. At first, this seems like a narrow subject, but through the author's command of history, geography, politics and social theory this subject provides a window into colonial thought and behavior which results in an extremely interesting and satisfying piece of scholarship.

I'm a Harvard grad, 99% GRE scorer (337, 168Q / 169V, 5.5 AW) and full-time tutor who has taught the GRE for 16 years. Despite a lack of helpful updates over the last 4 years (only 22 of this book's 584 pages are new--the remainder is the same as the 2nd edition), and a slightly inflated cost (I bought it for $25), this book and the free GRE PowerPrep software from ETS (which is compatible with both Mac and PC, and contains 2 of the 4 GRE exams mentioned on the cover of the book) remain the very best sources of GRE practice questions. When studying for the GRE, one must remember that all non-official sources of GRE practice questions and tests are simply lesser imitations of the real thing. Although third-party strategy books and practice drills are often necessary to supplement your studies, nothing beats the Official Guide when it comes to realism, especially for verbal questions. The Official Guide to the GRE, 3rd Edition is barely revised from the 2nd edition. 4 out of the first 7 chapters are exactly the same, as are the 2 (paper) practice tests included in the book. It includes 296 real GRE questions, and 57 additional math exercises.Chapter 1: About the GRE General Test (same as the 2nd edition)Chapter 2: GRE Analytical Writing (same)Chapter 3: GRE Verbal Reasoning (same)Chapter 4: GRE Quantitative Reasoning (same)Chapter 5: GRE Quantitative Reasoning (5 extra pages)Chapter 6: GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions (5 extra pages)Chapter 7: GRE Math Review (12 extra pages)Chapter 8: GRE Practice Test 1 (same)Chapter 9: GRE Practice Test 2 (same)It is also important to note that the book itself only includes 2 (not 4!) GRE paper tests. The other 2 GREs are the CATs (Computer Adaptive Tests) that can be accessed by downloading the free GRE PowerPrep Software from the ETS website.Yes, it would have been nice to include some new tests in here, but as other reviewers have noted, that’s unfortunately not the case. This book is nearly identical to the previous (2nd) edition, and no longer includes a CD (not that the CD adds much, since the PowerPrep software has always been free to download online for anyone with internet access).I understand that many of us in the test-prep industry (including myself) are flummoxed by the fact that ETS has declined to release any new practice tests in this 3rd edition of the Official Guide--it would have been nice to have more real GRE practice tests to give our most diligent students. However, 99% of people who are searching for a GRE prep book on Amazon have never taken the test before, so it doesn’t really matter that these tests aren’t new--if they’re new to you as a potential grad student studying for the tests, then for all intents and purposes, they should work just fine. That is, until you run out of official GRE practice tests, at which point you should start looking for other resources. Here are my top recommendations for GRE Prep Materials:1) The free PowerPrep software from ETS, which includes 2 full CATs, a Test Preview Tool, an untimed practice test (same as Test #1), and Extended Time options.2) The Official Guide to the GRE, 3rd edition (you are here): The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition3) The GRE Super Power Pack, 2nd edition: Official GRE Super Power Pack 2/E (Test Prep)4) Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides: Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides)5) Manhattan Prep 5-Lb Book of GRE Practice Questions: 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides)6) Magoosh: GRE Prep by Magoosh7) Barron's: Barron's GRE, 22nd Edition8) McGraw-Hill: McGraw-Hill Education Preparation for the GRE Test 2017 3rd Edition9) Cliff's Notes: CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests 3rd Edition10) GRE Vocab Capacity (disclaimer: co-authored by me) GRE Vocab Capacity: 2017 Edition - Over 1300 Powerful Memory Tricks and MnemonicsPLEASE NOTE: Even though Kaplan-published books are always among the top-rated and top-selling GRE books on Amazon, I personally find them to be of very low quality, and their online reviews to be highly suspect. For more information, you can google “GRE Action Plan”. Good luck!

Do not buy this book if you are trying to effectively review for the quantitative reasoning section of the test. I used this book to study for several months for the GRE, and I took three of the four practice tests and earned above average scores. I felt fairly confident about at least earning an average score on the math section. I thought that buying a book that is manufactured by the company who makes the test would ensure that I earn a good score (with focused studying of course).NOPE.Test day comes, the quantitative reasoning section is at the least 20x harder than any of the practice tests and review questions. My unofficial score is several points below average, despite studying furiously for several months and always earning above average scores. I felt so confused about what happened because I had worked so hard--this wasn't a case of pathetically studying. Later I talked to some other students in my research lab, come to find out ETS's practice materials are not good tools. Kaplan and Manhattan are apparently better, so I will be buying their practice guides to study for when I retake this exam.I don't write product reviews, but I hate the fact that I just wasted about $235 on this book and my original GRE and will have to shell out another $205 for my retake. I don't know if this is some scam so that ETS makes more money from people who have to retake the test after using their bogus practice guides, but I do know that just because it says they make the test does not mean that it is a good product. I wish I knew that ETS's books are bad. Do not waste your money on this book, because you will have to waste more money to retake the GRE.

The ETS's newly released GRE Guide is, staggeringly, almost identical to its second edition, which was a mere supplement to its first edition. In the last six years, nearly nothing has been changed, and in four years, absolutely nothing new has been added. There are parts of this book--notably, almost the entire mathematics review, and many of the Verbal and Quantitative sample questions--that have not changed in literally decades, going back to when the GRE was in a completely different format and had substantively different component parts. It is an absolute embarrassment that the ETS charges over $200 for the public to take its exams, generating literally millions of dollars in revenue, and yet the organization cannot be bothered to invest in the creation of a useful, worthwhile study guide. The ETS GRE Guide is a wonderfully useful text if you are interested in reading a book about how the ETS would like you to think about the GRE. It provides great insights into how the ETS considers its own test, but the book is not itself a great study guide. The best way to utilize it is as a supplement to a separate study plan. Do not bother taking the paper-based practice exams as practice tests: use the questions as problem sets. Read the answer explanations with a healthy amount of skepticism: you may be given the longest, most egregiously frustrating methods of solving. Do not, under any circumstances, think that everything in the math review is worth considering. You'll literally never need to know interquartile rankings, how to graph a circle, or how to calculate a standard deviation.Buy this book in conjunction with another text to study for the GRE. This is not a standalone guide under any circumstances.

Review

"... Hotez isn't pulling any punches." (Foreword Reviews)"Recommended for popular science readers looking to refute the antivaccination debate as well as readers interested in children's public health." (Library Journal)"Drawing on his substantial professional experience with vaccine development and evaluation, as well as his personal experiences with his autistic child and his commitment to applying the principles of 'Science Tikkun' to improve public knowledge about complex medical issues, Dr. Hotez speaks effectively and simultaneously to parents, medical and public health authorities, and proponents of the anti-vaccine movement." (Rodney Hoff, University of Washington School of Public Health)"Compelling! Fascinating! Engaging! A must-read! This courageous book, by one of the world’s leading physician-scientists, is about vaccines, autism, and the very personal impact of having an autistic child on the author, his family, and his career." (Eugene D. Shapiro, MD, Yale University)"A truly marvelous book―Peter Hotez deftly intertwines his dual perspectives as a father and a researcher to focus on vaccinations and autism. Despite the general scientific consensus that vaccines do not cause autism, many parents unwisely opt out of vaccinations, raising long-term risks for their children and others. This book comes at a critically important time and addresses the issues in a personal and engaging way." (Fred R. Volkmar, MD, Yale University School of Medicine)"Dr. Hotez weaves together a compelling, touching, sometimes funny personal story, a fascinating tale of a career devoted to helping the vulnerable and saving lives, and a clear, accessible explanation of how science shows that vaccines don't cause autism. It is a powerful combination on a crucially important topic." (Dorit R. Reiss, UC Hastings College of the Law)"Peter Hotez has written a timely book showing the science community how to overcome decades of avoidance and truly engage the public―in the process minimizing the impact of anti-science groups―to help ensure that science can continue its dedication to finding the solutions to what ails us." (Mary Woolley, President and CEO, Research!America)"A uniquely authoritative account... This book is a must-read for parent groups, child advocates, teachers, health-care providers, government policymakers, health and science policy experts, and anyone caring for a family member or friend with autism." (Precision Vaccinations)"Peter Hotez has 2 words for his fellow scientists: Speak up... [Vaccines Did Not Cause Rachel's Autism] seeks to clear some people's muddied perspectives on autism and vaccines while also sharing his journey with his daughter Rachel." (Global Health NOW)"A tour de force in the field. I have read many book on vaccines and vaccine policies and this one stands out among all of them. Perhaps it is the way Dr. Hotez seamlessly weaves in his and his family's experiences with Rachel's autism. He covers the diagnosis, the daily trials and tribulations, the frustrations, and the successes... I can't recommend this book enough and hope it has a wide audience of physicians, parents, students, and policy makers." (Dr. Amesh Adalja Tracking Zebra)

About the book “Vaccines Did Not Cause Rachel’s Autism”:If Dr. Peter Hotez hoped to reassure people about vaccines and autism, his inadvertently revealing book’s silo thinking, inaccuracies and omissions achieve the opposite effect. Hotez’s slim volume contains only 2 graphics about vaccines – but indulge much name dropping, media quotes and personal speculations. Hotez hoists himself by his own petard, portraying an ambitious generalist with irons in too many fires, bedazzled by status, blind to cronies’ data fraud, and avoidant of scientific evidence inconvenient to his career.Evidence such as emerging research on medical treatments: Hotez over-focuses on his daughter’s behaviors, rather than her biology. While the rest of the autism world runs scans and lab tests to detect co-morbid or causal disorders, he never mentions ordering medical tests to detect encephalopathies, GI inflammation, MTHFR, allergies, OATS, etc. While many autism parents avoid gluten, he still feeds his daughter bagels. Which perhaps is fine if, indeed, vaccines didn’t cause her autism – but her single case cannot negate the medical history of countless victims of vaccine-induced autism.Hotez’s daughter Rachel is a supporting player in her own book, essentially his heroic narrative bouncing frenetically from topic to topic. Various classic autistic affects she’s displayed include loud piercing crying, late speech, scripting, low IQ, eczema, “colic,” selective eating of gluten/casein (p. 45), texture sensitivity, spitting and swearing (Tourette’s, her father wondered), hyperfocus on specific topics, and more symptoms familiar to readers of listservs and social media. All words that provide medical clues to parents more focused on the health of kids instead of their own career.Rachel’s vaccine history (pp. 38-39): “…she received five doses of the… (DTaP) vaccine, and then boosters in 2006 for tetanus and diphtheria (Td), and later in 2011 for all three diseases (Tdap) - the adolescent/adult formulation. She also received the two scheduled measles-mumps-rubella and varicella vaccine doses, and four doses each of the polio vaccine and Hib vaccine. Rachel received three doses of the hepatitis B vaccine and also her hepatitis A vaccine, meningococcal vaccine, and HPV cervical cancer vaccine. To this day she receives annual influenza vaccines.”The books’ references total a sparse 14 pages and their not-so-rigorous content explains much about Hotez’s grandiose utilitarian worldview. Elsewhere, awkward personal aspects of his character are revealed — as when considering the risk of autism if choosing to have another child (p. 78): “Quite honestly, it was Ann who had the intense desire to have a fourth, and she pushed her agenda hard.”Hotez’s book confirms the public’s fear about vaccine policymakers who perpetuate the autism epidemic: that they are selectively inconsiderate of others’ experiences, entrenched in cronyism, comfortable with vaccine mediocrity, and/or paralyzed by fear. Taxpayers deserve more than another deluded lifetime bureaucrat with a white knight complex who doesn’t care what he tramples while moving toward his career’s summit. This he does at his child’s peril: If Hotez remains unwilling to investigate how other parents have healed their children, he will never heal his.

Totally disagree with the author. Vaccine is like just any other drug that has upside, downside, adverse reactions and side effects. Not every drug is suitable for every patient and also not every drug works in the same way in all people. Same with the vaccine. Too much of a good thing is always bad and hence we are seeing Autism 1 in 40 American children. Not addressed now, will soon lead to Autism 1 in 10 kids and eventually 1 Autism kid in every American family.

This is an unverified review because I bought the book at Barnes and Noble. It was a nice story about a dad who loves his daughter. I had hoped that there would be more scientific evidence presented. Basically Hoetz claims vaccines did not injure his daughter because his wife claims the daughter was different from the time she was born. With the Hep B & Vit K injections on the first day of life I am not sure how they can conclude this. I give the book one star because one would assume that there would be more science, especially from an infectious disease doctor like Hoetz.

Vaccines didn't cause Rachel's autism, therefore, vaccines don't cause anyone else's autism ever??? This is awfully anecdotal for a "scientist." Maybe his judgement is clouded by the conflict of interest of all that vaccine money...

If you follow this author's activities you see he clearly has an agenda and is only pushing his own ideology. Skip this book and find something with useful information.

The despicable fact is that this MD(and many like him) ignores the thousands and thousands of parents who all tell the same story of their children being harmed by vaccines. He perpetuates the LIE that vaccines are “safe and effective”, the bumper sticker slogan that is not backed up by science! When will the Pharmaceutical monster admit that since there has never been an inert placebo control group study of a single vaccine, let alone the entire damn schedule of ever growing numbers of vaccines that are burdening our children’s detox pathways, that you cannot claim vaccines are safe at all! There is no data to show the long term health outcomes favor the vaccinated. Keep shilling for your pet industry. Parents are in charge of their kids, not the corporate government.

I loved this book. The characters came to life right off the page. The storyline held my interest throughout the entire book and I found it terribly hard to out down. I have read two of her books and I will continue to read her.

I have loved Ms Freeman's writing from the first time I read one of her books over thirty years ago! She draws you into her characters' world with a deft hand and carries you along to the end. It is a shame that this glorious author is no longer with us. But, we are so lucky to be able to get her books today!

This is a wonderful story spanning a couple of generations. Some reviews have mentioned that it was wordy and drawn out but I liked knowing what the characters were thinking. Because of this by the time I finished the book I felt like I knew each of the three main characters better than if they were family I lived with. The story addresses the hate and discrimination against Jews. Reading about how Hitler manipulated people to follow him is bothersome, especially in out current political times.

There is a lot to say about racism and its effects on the people who experience it. There is also a lot to say about people who want to remake their identities. Unfortunately, this book doesn’t say any of them with insight, compassion or intelligence. For a better look at this story, read Phillip Roth's The Human Stain.

The story line was believable. I did notice grammatical errors along the way, and the ending was a little flat. I cared enough about the characters to finish the book.

Sorry to have this one end. One of the best historical novels, detail, characterizations, time and place; all kept me anxious to pick it up and read more!

What a wonderful book, I found it also very sad for a person to be ashamed of their heritage and religion.

I like books about people I can feel I know and have interesting lives. I am also old so I like happy endingsP

This was a very interesting read, and definitely a page turner for me. This story has many interests for me, the adoption, something that I have always liked reading about and Guatemala, as I grew up there.Kate Malloy goes to Guatemala to study the water quality of Lake Atitlan, In 1990 on an academic grant, while living in Santiago Atitlan, she befriends a woman from a nearby village and is teaching her English in exchange for local tips on how to do things. The woman has two year old twins, Sofia being one of them, Tragedy strikes while she is there and she witnesses a massacre by the Military of a group of indigenous people, one being her friend with the twins, and hearing a baby cry after the group has been gunned down, she rushes in to grab Sofia, the others, as far as she can tell are all dead and takes off with the baby before anyone can stop her. Making her way for days to Antigua, where she meets some interesting people that end up helping her Illegally adopt Sofia so that she can take her back to the USA and out of harms way. One of those people is Will, a linguist and ex peace corp volunteer, who becomes an important part of her life.I will not give away anymore of the story, but a good part of the book takes place in Guatemala both in the 1990's and in 2003.I hope in this case the author will write a follow up book about this story and its characters as it left me wanting more.

I love books about Guatemala. When this one was recommended by a friend, I was excited to read it. While I liked many aspects, The Center of the World had me more annoyed than excited by the end. Why? I found Kate to be whiny--someone I wouldn't want to talk to in real life. However, for me the book's fatal flaw was one of culture. Important parts of the book are set in Santiago Atitlan--a Tz'utujil town. The author, however, has the people speaking Kaqchikel. You don't have to know much about Lake Atitlan to know that the people of Santiago Atitlan do not speak Kaqchikel. Of course, this is a work of fiction and the author can change facts to fiction as she chooses. However, many of the reviewers talk about how much they learned about Guatemalan people and culture. Well, in this case, people are learning something absolutely wrong. This change did nothing for the story and it cause so much cognitive dissonance that it stripped away much of my enjoyment of the book.

The Center of the World by Jacqueline SheehanReviewed byMark D. WalkerHaving just completed my own memoir, much of which takes place in Guatemala and having all three of our children born there, Jacqueline Sheehan’s novel was a must read. I also wrote about the devastating impact of the violence in the 1990s and its root causes of this sad period in Guatemalan history, which this author introduces in beautiful prose. The story explores the mother-daughter bond which crosses cultures against the backdrop of one of the most violent times of Guatemala’s history,Young Guatemalan adoptee Sofia is grieving the loss of her stepfather, Martin, who provides information after his death that turns everything she thought about her adoption upside down. She confronts her mother, Kate, who is forced to tell the truth, which takes her back to the 1990s (the transition is seamless).Kate explains that she was a graduate student in Guatemala when Sofia’s parents were killed and that she had tried to protect her from the violence. But Sofia is determined to discover the truth from the past, which takes her, along with her mother and grandfather, on a journey back to Guatemala. The author’s background as a psychologist is evident in appreciating the family dynamics. Sophia’s confusion and pain are evident just as Kate’s regret and desire to make things right is heartrending. All of this is complicated by Kate’s encounter with her first love in Guatemala, “Will”, who specializes in native languages. Revenge from a fellow American back in the 1990s complicates Kate’s ability to get Sophia safely out of the country. After Kate’s narrow escape from Guatemala, Will pursued his career in Guatemala over the years working with the local Maya communities. When Sophia arrives in Guatemala, she tracks him down during her search for her true identify and looks to him for an explanation of the circumstances that pulled her away from her own Mayan family. While in her former Maya community, Sophia experiences serious culture shock, as everything is so different from her home in the U.S., but her championship level of soccer allows her to connect with all the young people in the community. The story ends with Kate and her true love, Will, leaving a church holding hands after Sophia has popped her head to inquire, “Mom, are you okay?”The author is a Ph.D, a novelist and essayist. She teaches writing in Guatemala. Her new book, “The Tiger in the House” came out in March of this year. In regards to the reviewer who disputed the fact that the community of Santiago Atitlan, where the initial violence took place, spoke Tz’utujil, not Kaqchikel as stated in the book, I missed this fact, although I worked in Guatemala on and off for over eight years and have visited it all my life with my Guatemalan wife. However, Guatemala has 23 native languages and they do speak Tz’utujil in Santiago, but on the other side of the Lake in Panjalachel, they speak Kaqchikel. It’s complicated. So I’ll give the author a pass and, by the way, the book is fiction, and a real page-turner.

I always love books that teach me something new. I knew nothing about Guatemala, but now, after reading this book, almost believe I have been there. The author's descriptions are vivid...both of the beauty of the land and the people, and of the horrors of war there. I may never get to Guatemala, but I thank the author for sharing her sense of that country with me. From my perspective as a mother I felt the anguish of the main character's need to protect her child in the best way she could, even though that way was flawed. Throughout the book the reader is forced to think, "What would I have done? Would I be brave enough to do this?" And, last, who doesn't love a good love story?

What I loved about reading "The Center of the World" is that I learned things. Jacqueline Sheehan has such a strong voice in this beautiful novel that I found myself in that rare zone when I read. With the revolution in Guatemala as the story's background, I was introduced to the Mayan culture through a gracefully webbed storyline full of surprises. This is only one thing I learned. Another? Love lingers. When Kate disappears from Will's life, I secretly hoped that she would not forget the depth of her feelings for him. Sheehan did not disappoint me. Characters run away, explode, and do the unpredictable. This new novel reads fast but not so fast that we feel faint from exhaustion. It is nice to stay awhile with the characters as they think through their next moves. You'll love this book!

I'd give this a 3.5/5, but it's incredibly well-known and well-reviewed already so I'll keep this one short. This is a very sweet, fairy tale inspired piece of shortish fiction set in the town of Wall and in Faerie. In Wall there is, well, a Wall that divides the regular world from Faerie and there's a gap in the wall here that is usually guarded. Rarely there is a market at the gap in the Wall with magical items and the townspeople mingle slightly with the inhabitants of Faerie and this fairy tale type story of seeking a falling star who turns out to be a girl, at least in Faerie, ensues.I'll just note that I "read" this by listening to it in audiobook form. The audio book for this, at least the version I listened to, is read by Neil Gaiman, the author of the book. He's an excellent narrator and it's nice to hear the book how the author envisioned it.

I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust. The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book. Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.

I loved the movie so much that i bought this book and found that it is a much more adult fairy tale than the film. A lot was changed to adapt the book to the screen, but the overall tone was very similar. There was more sex and more blood and guts, but it was fun to read and I am glad I bought it.

I really liked this book. I guess I was ruined a bit for Neil Gaiman since I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane before any other of his works. I think about that story all the time. It still resonates with me months after I read it. This story feels similar to me. Tristan will be with me for a long time. I also agree with Neil Gain an on the power of fairy tales or myths or whatever you want to call them. A lot of them have been sanitized over the years from the original stories. Original issue fairy tales were much more grim to make a point.I do not like everything Neil Gaiman writes but the stories I do like are so profound and moving that they stick with me for quite a while. Stardust is one of those.

Magnificent story by author AND magnificent story teller, Neil Gaiman. I honestly have never fallen in love with a story like this until now. I am over the moon about it (so to speak), It is read by the author and that is a treat for the listening audience as he is delivering it in the way it was meant to be.I have listened to this in a car with others, and on my own now quite a few times because there is so much detail in the story-telling and it is pleasant to hear.I had seen the movie Stardust, related to this story it is, but never had a real interest in the movie because (I know now) of how it was portrayed. Although it has helped me visualize some scenes in the audio.Best ever story...well, what can I say...other than...this story I highly recommend for anyone with an interest in fantasy and faerie stories...it is ONEGOODSTORY!

After seeing the movie when it first came out and then buying it when it came out on DVD/BluRay and found out it was a book first, I had to get it. I wanted it in Hard Back as I am huge reader and have a large library and prefer to have them in Hardback form as they last longer. The book did not disappoint. The movie was excellent and the book is even better and am super happy w/ it.I have read several book by Neil Gaiman and this is by far one of the best if not the Best Novel he has ever written. Such a great story and for those romantics out there you will really love this book, as it shows that anyone can find love in even the most remote of places and really teach what love is, etc. Enjoy!

I love this book so much in fact that I own it in several different formats and have read and/or listened to it in all. I first got the audiobook, but sometimes you miss things while listening and I was curious have some things were spelled, so I got the kindle version as well. Then I wanted it on the bookshelf both for myself and in the hopes that one of my children will get curious and pull it down when the time is right. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a little magic and sparkle in their life.

Obviously it's difficult not to compare a book with the movie. There are some major differences, some good and some bad. The actual story is classic and unique, most certainly an excellent read. My biggest issue however is the lack of character development with our female lead and the fact that there is absolutely no chemistry between the two. It's a fairly straightforward story. Boy goes on journey, becomes a man, and of course he gets the girl in the end.
