I can honestly say that out of probably 15+ guitar books that I own, this is the first one that I actually read cover to cover. I did more than just read it, actually - I connected with it and worked through it , fully understanding each concept and then moving on to the next. I am very satisfied with the purchase and look forward to getting more of Joseph Alexander's excellent books. Having played guitar for roughly 35 years, on and off, in a mostly self taught manner, I have always felt very inadequate in terms of my actual understanding of what I was doing. It feels great to finally be opening that door, with Mr. Alexander's help, and actually beginning to understand what my fingers have been up to all these years.

Guitar: The Circle of Fifths for Guitarists: Learn and Apply Music Theory for GuitarI have purchased a few of the books in this series. The author is adept at simplifying musical theory and keeping it focused especially for those who have been frustrated by traditional methods of learning. Included with the book are links to audio examples of the point being discussed. Together his methods and layout take you through the process simply and effectively. In a short time you will find yourself comfortable with the guitar instead of lost and discouraged. You will start to hear the individual notes and be confident with their location on the neck and be able to reproduce what your hear, as well as reach the point of writing your own basic compositions. I couldn't recommend any series of books more emphatically than this series.

I was looking for a book that would address the question of why certain pitch changes sound good, and how to build music around those changes. This book isn't really that. Half of the book is wasted space, not only in how sparsely printed the pages are ( mostly whitespace .. I've never seen a book so sparsely printed ) but also in directions about how to build keys with the correct sharps/flats/etc. 99% of guitar players don't care about sharps or flats !! It's like the author is saying "you've got this wonderful visual tool - the fretboard - but instead of learning around that, I want to tell you about how many sharps are in this scale..."Furthermore the author only mentions 3 options for 5th/4th pitch changes on the fretboard when there are at least twice that many. So this is really a book for extreme beginners, who have very little education in music theory. If you have ever taken a class in school you could probably skip this book.Only 3-4 pages cover what should really be the main topic of the book, which is *application* of the circle of 5ths in music. Those few pages are gold, which is why I give this book 3 stars instead of 2. If the author wanted to improve on this book I would suggest spending the first third on simply fretboard movements and the last 2 thirds on modulation. Get rid of *everything* else because most of us who are learning guitar simply don't care about the rest.

I've been noodling around with music for a number of years, have a number of books on circle of 5ths. Most books just present exercises using the circle, but this one gives you a basic understanding of how it applies to music, and why it is useful.

Easy to follow and to understand. I took Theory many years ago and just plain forgot a lot of it just because I never used theory much, I played guitar in cover bands and just learned music by ear. Though you learn to navigate through this method, no really understanding themethod behind it kind of limits me, so this book was a great refresher and also has taken me to new depths of understanding and I'm only a 1/3 of a way through the book, there are a lot of "lights on" moments for sure. Invaluable tool in understanding composition and note selection.I truly believe this should be a starting point for any guitarists, understanding how "musical" notes work in the context of any song helpsone to "cheat" the steep learning curve of just taking stabs in the dark fleshing notes out learning by ear.Guitar: The Circle of Fifths for Guitarists: Learn and Apply Music Theory for Guitar

I amazed at how quickly I am learning music theory and more with the Circle of Fifths for Guitarists. I recently finished the first chapter and am blown away on how much I realized I really don't know about music. I am 67 and started teaching myself when I was 10. I did take lessons for about 3 months until my family realized financial challenges and my lessons were terminated. I believe that after just the first chapter I am finally going to realize my lifetime dream of really playing the guitar and creating music that finally makes full sense. I am excited to continue on working through the rest of the book so my ideas for music composition can finally be realized. I am looking forward to working with many of your books to further my knowledge into playing this wonderful instrument. I fully recommend this book for anyone serious about increasing their skills and understanding of making music.Thank You, Joseph for your dedication in bringing guitar work to a new level for me and all others interested.

One of the few books I have read entirely. It explains very well the genesis and development of the Circle of Fifths in a way that is very understandable and most importantly discusses its application. I would recommend first reading a fundamentals of guitar theory book to fully comprehend and appreciate the concepts presented but not an absolute necessity. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about playing guitar.

Let me provide a little bit of background… I bought this book for my husband because he’s of the optimal Star Wars fandom generation. I grew up familiar with the movies thanks to my older brother and distinctly remember seeing the special editions and Episodes I-III in the theater. Neither of us would consider ourselves uber-fans or profess an undying devotion to the franchise, but I was curious about this cultural phenomenon. So…What I enjoyed the most about this book was that it became an immersive experience, because as soon as I started reading about the Star Wars universe, I had to re-watch all of the movies. Though it was occasionally bogged down with the minutiae of every detail of George Lucas, his creative process, franchising, filming, his various companies, finances, et al, there were more interesting tidbits that I found intriguing. Example: “Elvis Presley… was in the process of securing a Star Wars print to screen for himself and Lisa Marie at Graceland the day before he died.”I was most interested in how the story and the films evolved, first in Lucas’s brain, then to a more tangible thing. One of my favorite quotes pretty well defined Lucas’s attitude concerning his creation:“I was afraid science fiction buffs would say things like ‘you know there’s no sound in space,’” Lucas said in 1977. “I just wanted to forget science.” In space, everyone can hear you go pew pew.Of course, the influence Lucas had on pop-culture, science fiction movies (Aliens, Blade Runner, James Cameron, Tron, etc), and special effects is immense. “Alien is to Star Wars what the Rolling Stones were to The Beatles.” It’s fascinating how this one man had an idea, turned it into a vast collaborative empire, and made himself a billionaire through his creativity and ambition.

This book gets 5 stars for the incredible level of detail and "insider" information collected all in one place. It is not a page-turner, but rather more of a Star Wars fan's resource for knowing the backstory of how Star Wars came to be. Great things in life never happen as a straight arrow, and Star Wars is no exception. The book takes the reader through the twists, turns, and happy accidents that led to the great Star Wars movies.The first chapters are a bit difficult to get through because the author really steps far back in time and away from the movies to give backstory. But plow your way through it to reach the stuff you really want to read about.This is detail on the level of what J.W. Rinzler puts into his "Making of" books about the original trilogy.

A really, really, really good book about our most beloved galaxy far, far away. This has stories and insights I haven't read anywhere about a lot of fan topics, and Chris Taylor feels like a fellow SW friend all the way. The book' style is easy to read, well written, detailed, personal and engaging. Any fan of the SW franchise has to buy this book. PS: I'm not a friend of Chris Taylor. MTFBWY all!

I was recommended to read this book not just because I'm a Star Wars fan but also because how great this story is. The beginning of how George Lucas was inspired and how that transcended was really fascinating. Not only did I find this book to be insightful and informative but I found myself continuing reading because of how Star Wars impacted our entertainment industry. I was surprised how well in-depth this book was. Yes I learned tons about how much Star Wars impacted our culture around the world but also what Star Wars mean to people. This book also shows how important it is to persevere. George Lucas is a brilliant person but not everything went perfect for him. The man had an interesting life and encountered several difficult obstacles that could have changed Star Wars the way we know it today. Whether you enjoy the original movies but maybe not the prequels, certain books, characters added to the expanded universe, one thing is certain. No matter what your opinion about George Lucas or Star Wars, his work not only inspired many people but he helped revolutionized the movie industry in many ways.

I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable, though I am a huge Star Wars fan. It was a quick read, and at just over 400 pages it's not wafer-thin; and, in fact, it is chock full of interesting facts, quotes, and speculation about the making of the movies, the people who made them, acted in them, created props and stories and marketing for them. And, of course, lots about the people who buoyed the Star Wars franchise to the dizzying pop culture heights upon which it sits today--its millions of fans. If you count yourself among them (and even if you don't, and you're just curious about why so many people do), I highly recommend this book.There were a handful of points at which the Star Wars fan in me went, "HEY! That's not precisely correct! Thrawn was 1.983 meters tall, not 1.893," and there are lots of small spelling errors, they hardly detracted enough from my enjoyment to merit taking off a star. Read it, enjoy it, buy a nice tent for Episode VII.

As I grew older, my tastes began to differ and, as much as I still loved them, I started getting into other films. Then I read this book. And it reminded me why I love these films.Taylor's book is an in-depth explanation of the greatest film series of all time - from its affect on pop culture, what it means to be a fan, what influenced George Lucas, among so much else. If you're even a mild Star Wars fan, read it.

Although I'm not a die-hard fan of the franchise, I found myself endlessly surprised and entertained by this story behind the phenomenon that refuses to die. Packed with information and detail, Chris Taylor with careful articulation and clarity manages to get to the bottom of it all without getting lost in the shuffle. Overall, regardless of how you feel about this franchise, there is something here for everyone.

This book is a must have for any unique mother having a baby! The band's included blew my mind! N for Nirvana?! What!?

I purchased this for a friends son (the parents are both huge into music, especially classic rock) and they just loved it! I looked through it myself before packing it up to send to them, and it is very colorful, and the letters are big! Very cute book that will have kids learning the ABC's, and keep parents entertained when reading it!

I bought it for a baby shower gift for a friend of mine that's a drummer but it's not a baby book but like that's totally on me I guess. I'm still giving it to them tho

This is an 80s view of rock and roll. It was written by a Nashville artist who died when her children were very young. The publisher consented to its release with all proceeds going to an educational fund.

At the doctor she has a conversation about the “No Complaining Rule” from the nurse.The book takes off from there explaining what the No Complaining Rule is and what it is not.The basics behind the story are good, the story just helps to tell it without making it read like a text book with this as a recommendation.Overall the story isn’t that good, BUT the no complaining rule is. I bought it because of some negative circumstances at work and wanted to restructure my thoughts and take back how I felt about something. I feel like the book is just the start of the no complaining rule. You have to do it, daily. And when you do complain, make sure to stop and say “what if”… what if the XYZ thing isn’t bad, but it’s for the better or it’s for good.This book is straight to the point, can be read in a few hours and is good for either work or personal life negativity issues.I wouldn’t say this is the best book by Jon Gordon but it is worth the read. I would get it from the library, or buy it the ebook on kindle, a hard copy isn’t necessary.This is a short review for a short book.Overall, the book was: I give the book 3 stars out of 5.

A powerful lesson that we should all try to incorporate into our lives, unfortunately it is also one of the most difficult things to do in our modern society. Our society is set up to complain about every little thing and sometimes we do not even realize that we are complaining as it has become part of gathering together with friends or just having a normal conversation with someone at a coffee shop. Should we strive to not complain? Yes. Is it a practical book to follow and apply into your life? No. It is like exercise you know you should do it almost every day, but then you realize life does not allow for it to happen as often as you like. Overall it is a good read with a very good positive message. I do believe that students in school would benefit greatly from this book and maybe taught as part of a curriculum.

You'll see this review for all the Jon Gordon books I read. I actually bought "Training Camp" first, because I wanted my daughter (competitive soccer player) to work on her mental game. I read it first to be sure it was appropriate for her age (15). Well, I loved it! I found many helpful things for me. I was getting in a rut at my job and after looking inside myself, it seemed as though I was always angry and frustrated. I reached a point where I decided to change my outlook on everything, and whatever happens externally, happens. After Training Camp, I read the entire Jon Gordon series. They are very easy reading, regardless of age level (teens and up). People might complain that his books are too basic, but if you don't need a PHD to understand something, why write it like you need one? Each book has very simple steps and/or lessons to move you in the right direction. They didn't all work for me, but they all changed my outlook. Great stuff!

This book was and is an amazing book. I use to complain but I find myself now if I'm complaining I reroute my thoughts so I won't complain. My mother is a chronic and severe complainer I think I will let her read my book or buy her one of her own. I pray she's open minded about this book it has helped me so much. I highly recommend this book.

The No Complaining Ruled helped me move from a more pessimistic person to a more positive thinking, see each situation for what it is and be able to move on and make things better type of person. If you're willing, this book will change your perspective of things and change the way that you see things and act on a daily basis. I highly recommend The No Complaining Rule to anyone looking to make positive change in their life or anyone looking to improve their vision of things!

This is a really good book. I bought it for my wife but she let me read it as well. It is all about dealing with adversity without sinking into a death spiral of complaining and negative attitudes.

Overall I enjoyed the book. It was a quick and easy read, and it made me think more about the impact complaining can have on an organization. Sometimes we get so used to complaining being a part of every day life that it is hard to see where we can improve. The author did a good job of pointing out in what situations people typically complain and how to overcome this bad cycle. However, I did find the book to be a bit too simplistic and repetitive. From an HR student's perspective, I would have liked to see more about the challenges she faced when trying to implement this philosophy within her company. I am sure that in reality it would be much more difficult to change someone's lifestyle completely. That being said, it is still a very interesting concept, and I would definitely recommend this book for anyone hoping to improve their negativity for themselves or within their organization.

This book helps put life in perspective. A gentle reminder of how weshould be more appreciative of all that God has done for us and how we must choose how to respond when life doesn't always turn out as planned.

Fraction of the cost too - of the Haynes manual. If I run into any issues with it will come back and update my review. Air Conditioning is not total rocket science and this looks like a good guide.
