I have the 2004 edition of the phrase book and I find that it has a few features that are nicer than other phrasebooks currently on the market, but that is lacking some important ones - especially if you want to use it to help you learn Hebrew while in Israel. Since the other main publisher of phrase books is Lonely Planet, I will specifically compare these two.On the plus side, this Berlitz phrase book has:- Color-coded sections for some ease in finding topics (with icons on the top that can be helpful in locating a topic)- Uses American English (with British English in brackets)- Has a more extensive section if you plan on doing a lot of driving or renting a car (which younger travellers probably will not use)- Emergency numbers and phrases conviently located on the last page for quick access- A reference section for reading signs in Hebrew- A Hebrew menu reader section (with food groups) with the Hebrew in a large print- A dictionary that lists the gender of the Hebrew words- Conversions for clothing sizes and distances between US-standard to metric (but no temperature conversions!)- Larger Hebrew print than the Lonely Planet phrase book (though neither uses vowels - so you must rely on the English transliteration if you are not at least somewhat fluent in Hebrew)The cons of this phrase book include:- The dictionary only goes from English to Hebrew (the section icons and Hebrew sub-headings may make it possible for a Hebrew speaker to find a phrase or word to show to you, but it would take some time)- There is very little grammer given (so you will have trouble creating your own phrases, if you do not already have a basis in Hebrew grammer)- The numbers are only shown in the masculine form (so you will be incorrect when telling time, counting, or referring to feminine items)- The phrases are only in the masculine form (so you will be incorrect if you are a woman speaking, or if you are speaking to a woman) and there is insufficient grammer for you to say it correctly if you do not have a background in HebrewOverall, because of the usefulness of the American-Hebrew phrases, (slightly) larger Hebrew print, larger-print sign and menu readers and a better section on driving terms and phrases, this may be a better choice for older Americans planning only to use this for emergencies and occassionally in Israel. For everyone else, I would recommend the Lonely Planet phrasebook.

Having worked at BAC during this time and only being there for 1 year a lot of my questions about how the company was run had been confirmed. It was clearly a boys club starting with Lewis. The book confirmed the atmosphere, the constant change in management, HR running the business units and people, the shock about acquiring ML, the friction between Lewis and Thain. It's a behemoth organization that was hard to navigate due to the constant changes. Moynihan was a great choice to run the organization.

I just started and have done a hundred pages or so. I find those page to be very detailed, descriptive, and fair. Fair was important to me in this case because the head of Merrill-Lynch was a Black guy (me too) and I wanted to see if racial problems lead to the "demise" of ML. (I was aware that the firm lost a huge "racial" suit involving my personal advisor in Nashville.) As written, so far, everything is detailed, and specific to the problems ("non-racial") in the firm. Several screw-ups are referred to (as well as several dedicated professionals). I am enjoying reading about the firm in such detail. I feel like I really am beginning know, so far, what happened at the firm. I will definitely continue reading.

So how to review a book with absolutely no redeeming characters? Where the only ones that look remotely ok were only such because they talked to the writer more than the others.The book itself is a worthy history of Merrill Lynch's last 18 months as independent company and it's rocky merger with Bank of America. It shows the management to be self-centered, myopic and completely incompetent. Amazingly everyone gets out alive. Stan O'Neil gets $160mm. John Thain is the CEO of CIT. Greg Flemming is one of the top executives at Morgan Stanley. Bob McCann similarly positioned at UBS. Ahmass Fakahany the former head of Risk and Co-President is now a NY restauranteur. Even the chief culprit Osman Semerci seems to be the CEO of a $2 billion Hedge Fund in London (Duet). Savings are wiped out. Thousands and thousands of people lose jobs and houses and strangely those at the center of the storm are doing just fine.The book is a page turner. There are moments of real drama. The firm, the banking business and the economy are all sinking. The key subjects at Merrill and BoA are well profiled. The conflicts and live timeline given a "novel" feel to the storyline. At certain points it feels oddly distant from the events of the day. For example it barely discusses the spring of 2008 which was a time of huge uncertainty. Instead of telling us again how certain people felt I think he could have tied more of what was going on around Merrill at that time. But still good pace throughout.The book lacks technical detail. Other reviewers have mentioned this. Given it's now 2011 there are probably enough books explaining the "what" of the crisis where perhaps this is the "who". But I'd say this suffers a bit as a result. In talking about Merrill's losses in the fall of 2008 there is scant detail on how it happened and yet this was the biggest loss by far - $18 billion and the CDO positions had already been sold. Michael Lewis showed in "The Big Short" that you can still write a great book and include some good details on what are the investments that when wrong without boring people.I thought the writer was also a bit soft on Thain. They talked about his expert handling of the LTCM wind down from 1998 but there are famous stories of Goldman front running that unwind from months before that fund crashed. Wouldn't it put Thain's character in a different light to be more skeptical of his role? I would also doubt that he was the key driver of Goldman's mortgage trading in the 1980's.Secondly he seems overly sympathetic to Greg Fleming. On at least a dozen occasions he talks about the 15 or 16 years that Flemming has put into the firm only to see it blow up. Come on. 16 years is not that long. Mentioning it once or twice is ok but it is not a badge or a special amount of time, particularly when you're making unbelievable amounts of money. Please remember everyone is in it for the money.His descriptions of Bank of America culture were fascinating. Clearly they had an inferiority complex overlayed with enormous bravado; seeing themselves as outside the New York banking scene and resentful of being seen as less sophisticated being based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are not a bad bank by any means but clearly different from their major competitors. Given that Countrywide really buried that bank Farrell could have spent some time on it. It really was the Achilles heel that ruined Lewis' career. Ken Lewis probably could have survived the losses and ugly politics on closing the Merrill acquisition if his own bank were in better shape.In the end, this is a good book about the failure of Merrill Lynch and of how bad Stan O'Neil screwed up (repeatedly). There were colossal errors in judgement and a shocking misunderstanding of risk management. Risk management is 50% systems (which Merrill clearly did not have) and 50% honest dialogues with qualified practitioners which also did not exist. HOPEFULLY something is learned from it. If nothing else O'Neil should be kicked to the curb and stepped on (repeatedly).

This is a deeply researched and briskly written account of the demise of Merrill Lynch amidst the general market turmoil of 2008//9. It does a good job of setting context - both in terms of the culture and history of the two firms as well as the personal motivations and incentives the key players brought to the table. If you don;t have much background in financial matters - you will still understand the book and get the bigger picture.My irritation with it - is Farrell actually Greg Fleming in disguise?? The book was incredibly skewed to Greg the Superhero angle. Here is Greg conceiving of the deal before anyone else. Here is Greg getting $30 a share. Here is Greg waiving his bonus. Here is Greg being offered a job which would humiliate John Thain. Here is Greg, Here is Greg.

Farrell has written a very detailed and insightful overview of the events around Bank of America's purchase of Merrill Lynch. As with many of the books written on the financial crisis it details how ignorance around the basic principles of prudent risk management resulted in catastrophic events. Whether the ignorance was driven by greed, stupidity, or blind faith in the market continually going up (or a combination thereof), becomes almost irrelevant, but this book does a great job of investigating and demonstrating the results that came about as a result of less than ideal decisions. It delves deeply into the psyche and decisions made by O'Neal, Lewis, Thain, Semerci etc and how these eventually played out. The author is also not afraid to assign blame and I found his analysis to be fair and balanced. Farrell has certainly invested a great deal of effort into researching the events and characters, and then moulding these into a coherent and entertaining book. The book has a great amount of detail and information, but flows very well, holding the reader's attention from the first page to the last.

HORRIBLE Haggadah!! I thought this was the same one my family used and was so excited when I hosted my first Passover sedar for 12 friends one night and 7 the other. But nope - some of the print was messed up so you couldn't read the book (that 3-d shadow effect or cut-off), the story wasn't quite right, and if I recall, I think there were even sentences missing. We ended up scrapping the book and I asked my sister to purchase me some from her temple the next time they sell them.My advice - do NOT buy a Haggadah you have not fully checked out first. Everyone at my sedar was laughing at how bad the Haggadah was. It did the job in the sense I could use it to hit the highlights, but that's it. To help you understand just how bad it was...none of the attendees at my sedars celebrated the holiday together before - we all grew up using Haggadah's in our homes - yet we all felt this one was ridiculously awful. We are all conservative / reformed Jews, just for context in terms of what we're used to.Anyway, bad, bad Haggadah. Gets 2 stars because I was able to salvage it for the sedars, but they will never be used for another sedar by me - really bad.

Worked great for our small 7 people Seder. Would be nice if there were transliterations of the key prayers.Nevertheless this Haggadah includes all the important elements of the Passover Seder both before and after the meal. And has the major songs in the back.

Total rubbish. This is not the classic haggadah and does not match up with page numbering from earlier versons with an identical cover. Also, it is formatted left to right. Huge disappointment. Quickly returned.

Not like the old ones, these waffle back and forth between "ancestors" and "forefathers" and forget to tell you to fill the fourth cup

I remember this Haggadah from when my son was younger and we went to my mom for Pesach. Although the outside of the book is the same, it is missing many pages that were in it originally. Very disappointing.

It was more than expected however, the Hebrew could have been written in phonetic English as well.

The printing was so blurry on this set of haggadot that we all thought we were having vision problems. I will be searching for a different set for Passover next year.

This is the best Haggadah according to my children ( who used this one in Hebrew school) but you need to be careful if trying to match new that you already own as there are several different versions. I bought three to acc. Donate our growing family (each from a different seller) and only one of them was a true match to the ones we already owned. I don't know which one was a match, whether it was this one or not. The other two had different page numbers and layout which made keeping everyone n track for responsive reading more challenging.

So this is a good book for getting to know the general layout and workflow of Ableton 9, however it really should be called Producing Music with Ableton Live 9 Using Loops and Audio Clips. This book completely ignores the midi side of Ableton. None of Ableton's bundled instruments get so much as a mention. I find this particularly strange as there is an appendix where the author heaps praise on a few 3rd party instruments. The most commonly used audio effects are given a chapter of discussion, but again, nothing about midi effects. Heck, the piano roll isn't even mentioned...and that's a big part of Ableton for a lot of users. To be fair, the author does have another book that is supposed to be a companion to this..so he may cover it more in that book. All that said, the book is well written for what it is. I like the approach of building a song as you're learning the software. I just felt the scope of the book was a little limited.

If your trying to migrate and learn AL9, this should be in your library.I wouldn't go as far as to say this should be your only source of reference, but you could pair this up with Ableton Live 9 Power or Interactive Composition: Strategies Using Ableton Live and Max for Live and call it good.I say the above because it helps immensely to look at a problem and solution from 2 or more different angles, or worded 2 or more different ways.I went one step further and use all 3 books depending on what I'm stuck on, and read how each author teaches the process. Sometimes one author's solution clicks, sometimes another does, sometimes a solution suddenly makes sense only after I've read what another Author described.A great addition to your EDM AL9 collection

I like this book. The author takes you step by step through the various steps necessary for making music. Perrine's style is easygoing and never dry. His instructions, for the most part, are clear and easily understood. I've given it four stars (perhaps unfairly) because the Kindle book, "Power Tools for Ableton Live 9: Master Ableton's Music Production and Live Performance Application" is exactly the same. I thought I was getting two different books based on the titles.

I am a singer who wants to produce herself and to be able to lay down ideas without the high cost of studio time and to also be able to do so the second the muse hits. I am a novice in recording, for sure. Started out with GarageBand but needed more control. Took a free class at Guitar Center and the very knowledgeable instructor really encouraged me to use Ableton. I'm now using Ableton Live 9 Intro which was a free download with my Scarlett USB Audio Interface. This book is sooooooooooooo helpful. Step by step CLEAR breakdown of features and how to access these features. Yesterday I went step by step through the first 2 chapters. Found the info extremely helpful. I am most effective if I have a good foundation of how software thinks, then I can usually figure anything out. This book give a rock solid foundation of Ableton Live 9.

These books are great. I would start with Producing Music with Ableton Live 9 if you just spent 900 bucks and have no idea what you are doing. I spend months trying to figure just the simple stuff out and within three days of buying this book I had a lot of cool projects going and wasn't wasting so much time.

So different from a manual. Jake steers you through Live with exercises that propel through Abletons great features.It comes with a DVD so DO NOT buy the Kindle version as I did. You need the DVD to do the work:). I ended up with both but is was worth every penny. This is essentially a book for beginners, I believe. I was completely baffled by the initial complexity of Live but now I am hooked. I am no youngster, I recorded for CBS back in the late 60's in London..very OLD SKOOL for sure!! I worked through the old Fostex cassette units. then the Fostex Hard Drive units. Anyway..a great book...two thumbs up:)

Even if you have the printed documentation for Live 9, this is a good addition. Jake walks you through building a song -- primarily in session view -- and adds effects, etc. as they become relevant. By contrast, the Ableton documentation takes a feature-by-feature approach, with very little in the way of examples. Guaranteed you will learn something new.

First, for international buyers, I live on the brazilian's south and this cheap book came to me in 5 days through DHL. Very impressive. And it took 5 days, because nobody were in the house. On the 4th day they came and delivered a nice card with the exact time they would be on the next day. Amazing.The book itself is a very good step-by-step guide. I like the writing style and the author's Preoccupation about the basic audio concepts (on appendices). I knew about them, but I really liked the way it was explained on this book. I think we ever need new thoughts about the fundamentals.I really learned a lot with this book. Sometimes it is hard to follow some very detailed steps. And you really must follow every word. If you simplify what is being said, and quickly take an action, you won't get the expected result. So, I think that Perrine gave us a lot of attention on those words.It gave me a quick approach to the software, and I know how it works. Really, it's a very basic book, but it was what I needed. The Live's manual is complete, but it is also sterile. I truly recommend it for the beginners like me. It worth every penny.P.S.: I also bought the second Book "Sound Design, Mixing & Mastering" and unfortunately it has about 60 pages from the first book. It's a shame.
