So this is a good book for getting to know the general layout and workflow of Ableton 9, however it really should be called Producing Music with Ableton Live 9 Using Loops and Audio Clips. This book completely ignores the midi side of Ableton. None of Ableton's bundled instruments get so much as a mention. I find this particularly strange as there is an appendix where the author heaps praise on a few 3rd party instruments. The most commonly used audio effects are given a chapter of discussion, but again, nothing about midi effects. Heck, the piano roll isn't even mentioned...and that's a big part of Ableton for a lot of users. To be fair, the author does have another book that is supposed to be a companion to this..so he may cover it more in that book. All that said, the book is well written for what it is. I like the approach of building a song as you're learning the software. I just felt the scope of the book was a little limited.

If your trying to migrate and learn AL9, this should be in your library.I wouldn't go as far as to say this should be your only source of reference, but you could pair this up with Ableton Live 9 Power or Interactive Composition: Strategies Using Ableton Live and Max for Live and call it good.I say the above because it helps immensely to look at a problem and solution from 2 or more different angles, or worded 2 or more different ways.I went one step further and use all 3 books depending on what I'm stuck on, and read how each author teaches the process. Sometimes one author's solution clicks, sometimes another does, sometimes a solution suddenly makes sense only after I've read what another Author described.A great addition to your EDM AL9 collection

I like this book. The author takes you step by step through the various steps necessary for making music. Perrine's style is easygoing and never dry. His instructions, for the most part, are clear and easily understood. I've given it four stars (perhaps unfairly) because the Kindle book, "Power Tools for Ableton Live 9: Master Ableton's Music Production and Live Performance Application" is exactly the same. I thought I was getting two different books based on the titles.

I am a singer who wants to produce herself and to be able to lay down ideas without the high cost of studio time and to also be able to do so the second the muse hits. I am a novice in recording, for sure. Started out with GarageBand but needed more control. Took a free class at Guitar Center and the very knowledgeable instructor really encouraged me to use Ableton. I'm now using Ableton Live 9 Intro which was a free download with my Scarlett USB Audio Interface. This book is sooooooooooooo helpful. Step by step CLEAR breakdown of features and how to access these features. Yesterday I went step by step through the first 2 chapters. Found the info extremely helpful. I am most effective if I have a good foundation of how software thinks, then I can usually figure anything out. This book give a rock solid foundation of Ableton Live 9.

These books are great. I would start with Producing Music with Ableton Live 9 if you just spent 900 bucks and have no idea what you are doing. I spend months trying to figure just the simple stuff out and within three days of buying this book I had a lot of cool projects going and wasn't wasting so much time.

So different from a manual. Jake steers you through Live with exercises that propel through Abletons great features.It comes with a DVD so DO NOT buy the Kindle version as I did. You need the DVD to do the work:). I ended up with both but is was worth every penny. This is essentially a book for beginners, I believe. I was completely baffled by the initial complexity of Live but now I am hooked. I am no youngster, I recorded for CBS back in the late 60's in London..very OLD SKOOL for sure!! I worked through the old Fostex cassette units. then the Fostex Hard Drive units. Anyway..a great book...two thumbs up:)

Even if you have the printed documentation for Live 9, this is a good addition. Jake walks you through building a song -- primarily in session view -- and adds effects, etc. as they become relevant. By contrast, the Ableton documentation takes a feature-by-feature approach, with very little in the way of examples. Guaranteed you will learn something new.

First, for international buyers, I live on the brazilian's south and this cheap book came to me in 5 days through DHL. Very impressive. And it took 5 days, because nobody were in the house. On the 4th day they came and delivered a nice card with the exact time they would be on the next day. Amazing.The book itself is a very good step-by-step guide. I like the writing style and the author's Preoccupation about the basic audio concepts (on appendices). I knew about them, but I really liked the way it was explained on this book. I think we ever need new thoughts about the fundamentals.I really learned a lot with this book. Sometimes it is hard to follow some very detailed steps. And you really must follow every word. If you simplify what is being said, and quickly take an action, you won't get the expected result. So, I think that Perrine gave us a lot of attention on those words.It gave me a quick approach to the software, and I know how it works. Really, it's a very basic book, but it was what I needed. The Live's manual is complete, but it is also sterile. I truly recommend it for the beginners like me. It worth every penny.P.S.: I also bought the second Book "Sound Design, Mixing & Mastering" and unfortunately it has about 60 pages from the first book. It's a shame.

10 Stars. Luke Dittrich has written a wonderful, heartbreaking story about the life of Patient H.M., real name, Henry G. Molaison. During the time of Walter Freeman and his lobotomobile, there was also a man named Dr. William Scofield. Scofield, was a popular neurosurgeon and lobotomist of the day. Henry, due to his frequent seizures, became Dr. Scofield's patient and was liberally operated on and subsequently suffered horrible amnesia which prevented him from enjoying life, except for one moment at a time. Patient H.M became the most studied research subject in history.With the invention of the lobotomy and subsequent brain study, doctors who previously only had their data from simian experiments could actually use patients from asylums to study the brain. This story is a journey of the brain and those who pioneered in the experiments to find out what part of the brain controls which human function. Naturally, the lobotomists thought that severing those frontal lobes did wonders for their patients-over time this became questionable. In Henry's case, Dr. Scofield went a little deeper into both lobes rendering him a complete amnesiac who could eat two meals having never remembered eating the first. This book pays tribute to Henry as he selflessly gave his time for scientific study.This story is a fascinating study of Henry and those who controlled him, and it is an unveiling of hidden family secrets laid bare by the writing talents of Luke Dittrich. While some of the situations in this book are not for the squeamish, I highly recommend reading this book-this is the most interesting book of the year. I can imagine Mr. Dittrich unearthing the knowledge inside this book over time-it must have been an amazing albeit troubling journey. My own family grew faint at my discussions of lobotomies and the brain as I read this book-I couldn't help but talk about it. My husband said he never wanted to hear the word lobotomy again-but what a story and what a sacrifice it was for Henry. This is an excellent book-highly recommend!

This book was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I cannot praise it enough. Anyone who is interested in bioethics and neuroscience should read this book. It takes a huge amount of bravery from an author to write about something so very close to his own family, and be honest enough to admit his grandfather who performed lobotomies including one on Patient HM (when you are in Neuroscience like I was you never quit hearing about Patient HM). One reviewer said this book was written in anger...I don't think so. If he was angry, it was more about what his grandfather did to his grandmother (they don't know what operation he did on her). And I would agree with Dittrich, that his grandfather's penchant to perform psychiatric surgery was ridiculous. I think one of the best parts of this book was the revelation that his grandmother not only divorced this man, but went on to gain a couple of degrees and work with children the rest of her life. Kudos to her.But I see other emotions about Dittrich's grandfather. Confusion, pride for what Scoville did right, acknowledgement of his foibles, and some love maybe leftover from when Dittrich was a child, and looked up to this man. None of us have absolutely perfect fathers or grandfathers, but we still often have mixed feelings about them when we grow older.What really bothered me was the attitude not just of Scoville towards others, but so many of that generation. I'm boggled at the idea that they were still doing lobotomies in the 1970's, but it didn't surprise me. They were still sterilizing people like me who were disabled (I'm Deaf) in the 1970's. Eugenics was alive and well even then, and what's scary is the powers that be in politics, are working to make eugenics come back. Besides that, all the talk of implants in people for whatever reason, raise all kinds of bioethical flags.This is absolutely required reading if you want to know about HM. I actually think I was less mad about Scoville who gave Henry his condition of memory loss, than I was at the female psychiatrist who destroyed records on what they did to him, and took back his brain from whom they asked to slice his brain into something they could study...because the man obviously had another lesion which Scoville didn't do. All so she could protect her blasted reputation. That isn't science, and if she's still alive, she should be removed from her position, and probably have her license taken away from her. Totally bad behavior on the part of a scientist in the US. We hold our science to a lot higher level...and she broke all the boundaries of decent behavior!

The General vs. The President is compelling history that I often found difficult to put down. If you're interested in the Cold War era, the Korean War and the various political forces and actors engaged in a life-and-death-struggle for military and political supremacy, this is an indispensable book. An excellent history book and strongly recommended.

Great read! I couldn't put this one down. Read it in about four days, which is super fast for me! This book is is a thorough history of the first ten months of the Korean War & Truman's eventual firing of General Douglas MacArthur. It's hard for Americans born after WWII who live in a 24 hour news cycle, to understand just how people who lived during WWII viewed popular Generals like Eisenhower or MacArthur. These were the guys who had won WWII (at least for the Americans). They were almost godlike figures. Not only had MacArthur emerged as one of the most celebrated Americans of WWII, but his record in occupied Japan and the changes he made in that country were only slightly less Olympian. Couple these two achievements with his brilliant move at Inchon and you have (whatever your opinion of him), one of the greatest military figures in American history.And then it all unraveled. The Chinese enter in to the War & everything changes. MacArthur an advocate for total war, increasingly encourages not only bombing Communist China, but even the Soviet Union. He advocates "seeding" atomic material in a chain across Communist supply lines in North Korea.The most interesting side of this story to me was the timidity of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, themselves giants of WWII. Men like Omar Bradley, J. Lawton Collins, Admiral Radford, and former Secretary of state George C. Marshall, who hesitated to confront MacArthur until they finally had no choice. The other interesting aspect of the book was it's revelation of just how vulnerable the American military was in 1950.Not to mention most of the American peoples obliviousness to the fact that by mid 1951, the American armed services, which had swept all before it just 5 years beforewas dangerously over stretched in Korea, & the JCS were aware of this fact. The tension builds & the President & JCS finally have to make a decision.Very good read! My only problem with this book was the author's seemingly more sympathetic view to Truman (however it's hard not to be).

I asked a few of my friends what they knew about Truman and MacArthur in the Korean War. All are well read in history; they all had an answer. And for most it was "MacArthur wanted to use nuclear weapons against China," (or North Korea, or Russia), "and Truman wasn't willing to use the bomb, so he had to fire MacArthur." And while there's a bit of truth to each part of their answers, that's not really how it all played out. And I think all of them would love to read "The General vs. the President".This is a wonderful work of history. I've read biographies of both MacArthur and Truman, but this book brought both of them to life in a fresh way, especially with respect to their relationships with others. The complex narrative is laid our with great clarity, including both military and political maneuvers. I particularly appreciated the account of MacArthur's Congressional hearings, and the striking contrast between the public posturing and the devastating closed sessions.In a way, both men are diminished by this history. Truman's reputation has been on the rise in recent years, because of his no-nonsense pragmatism, but as Brands shows clearly, Truman was in over his head, and he made careless mistakes. MacArthur did wonders in Japan, particularly in the way he transformed its politics, but his naivety about global geopolitics seems breathtaking from our perspective.Highly recommended.

I was hoping this book would be good when I first received it, and it has only surpassed my expectations.The art is great, and the contents are terrific. Each letter of the alphabet contains both a short, easily quipped line to read / recite, as well as a long, detailed explanation of the history of that event for those curious minds who might want to learn more. Of course, there is also accompanying art, which is very nice.I don't think this is for the very little kids, but any young learner who is also interested in baseball (and specifically the Red Sox) would likely very much appreciate this book. I know this would have kept me very entertained as a little one.I highly recommend this book - especially as a gift for a Red Sox fan to be - and have since gone out and purchased two other copies for friends with children who are on their way to joining Red Sox Nation.Definitely a five star product in my book!

Once again, another Red Sox stocking stuffer put away in a carton until Christmas time. I did peek through this book and it was written and illustrated beautifully. Just love it and the little boy who receives this from Santa Claus will love it too.

My husband is a big Red Sox fan so I bought this book as a gift from our daughter, who's a newborn. I liked that you could read it on multiple levels - just the ABC's when she's little, or read the info on the sides for more in depth info when she's older.

This is a book that we will read again and again and again. Also makes visiting the park so much more fun when we all have some great stories and history!
