My all-time favorite history-and-disease book. First read it as a teen many many years ago, and it probably played a part in focusing my interest in biology. Dr Zinsser shines through on every page, making it highly readable as well as good science (and sociology) history.I highly recommend it.

Interesting and witty read. For anyone interested in the history of Typhus Fever, or just the transmission of disease in general. And/or for people interested in history and/or science. A one-of-a-kind book.

This book met all of my expectations, and more. It was interesting to read the stories of how diseases and parasites had played major roles in the history of the world. A fascinating book.

Even though this book was required for a class, I found it to be entertaining and informative. This book is about how "vermin" have influenced humans throughout history, and why we have certain perceptions about rodents and insects. The book is pretty comprehensive, covering human history from the birth of agriculture to the industrial age to the present day. I think of rodents as misunderstood, so this really resonated with me and helped me understand why some people hate them so much. This book is a pretty short, quick read, so if you're interested in the history of rodents, bugs, and disease, check it out.

Fascinating history of critters we don't think about, but should!!

I love this book! Originally published in 1934, it has withstood the test of time. Clearly, the writer loves his subject. His writing is sly, witty and informative, as he draws the reader in to a growing appreciation of this unusual subject.

great

Not every book leaves you wiser than when you began. This one does. It makes sense out of the bits and pieces of history that are often neglected by the historians.

The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English. Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?” Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. No truth’s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and there’s honour in that. But our lies aren’t even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure it’s your own, and then I’ll kiss you. After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone else’s truth: in the first case you’re human; in the second you’re just a bird! The truth won’t run away, but life just might – wouldn’t be the first time.Ready’s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of ‘Crime and Punishment’

This is Dostoyevski at his best - at least as far as this reader is concerned. This is a ‘complex’ story (in many respects) certainly with respect to the storyline: and, in the ‘typical’ Russian style, full of boiling emotion, honor, degradation and mystery. Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov, a young college drop-out, given to dark mood and brooding temperament sulks in his cramped, stuffy, oppressive little boarding house room and plans a murder. He has earlier published a pseudo-intellectual essay in which he postulates the ‘right’ of an ‘extraordinary’ person to even commit crime in the pursuit of a greater good. This ‘philosophy’ shared with the reader seems always in one way or another at the base of Rodion Romanovitch’s brooding conclusion: “Yes, that’s what it was! I wanted to become a Napoleon, that is why I killed her. . . . Do you understand now?”“I saw clear as daylight how strange it is that not a single person living in this mad world has had the daring to go straight for it all and send it flying to the devil! I . . . I wanted to have the daring . . . and I killed her. I only wanted to have the daring, Sonia! That was the whole cause of it!”The storyline twists and turns and interleaves a series of characters that include the pathetic, the deceitful, the honorable, and the utterly hopeless. Dostoyevski makes the depth of the read much greater than the storyline itself, however. Raskolnikov is positively tortured within his own mind by the plan for murder, by the murder itself and by his pursuit by the predatory Investigating lawyer - Porfiry Petrovich. The writing amazes with its precision in describing the ebb and flood of emotion, scheming and shame that torment Raskolnikov. And, as usual in his novels, Dostoyevski explores the philosophical implications of good and bad, afterlife or darkness, and human consequence related to an interconnected universe. An old-fashioned Epilog ends the read giving the reader some 'closure' on Rodion and some moral 'conclusion' for Dostoyevski. Over 150 years old and still this book sets the high end for 5-stars.Dover Thrift edition 2001, Translated By Constance Garnett

Review

“This is a wonderful, eye-opening book. Deep, readable, and providing refreshing evidence that there are domains and situations in which material incentives work in unexpected ways. We humans are humans, with qualities that can be destroyed by the introduction of economic gains. A must read!” (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, New York Times bestselling author of The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable)“Sly and lucid. . . . Predictably Irrational is a far more revolutionary book than its unthreatening manner lets on.” (New York Times Book Review)“Surprisingly entertaining. . . . Easy to read. . . . Ariely’s book makes economics and the strange happenings of the human mind fun.” (USA Today)“A fascinating romp through the science of decision-making that unmasks the ways that emotions, social norms, expectations, and context lead us astray.” (Time magazine)“In creative ways, author Dan Ariely puts rationality to the test. . . . New experiments and optimistic ideas tumble out of him, like water from a fountain.” (Boston Globe)“An entertaining tour of the many ways people act against their best interests, drawing on Ariely’s own ingeniously designed experiments. . . . Personal and accessible.” (BusinessWeek)“Ariely’s book addresses some weighty issues . . . with an unexpected dash of humor.” (Entertainment Weekly)“Inventive. . . . An accessible account. . . . Ariely is a more than capable storyteller . . . If only more researchers could write like this, the world would be a better place.” (Financial Times)“Ariely’s intelligent, exuberant style and thought-provoking arguments make for a fascinating, eye-opening read.” (Publishers Weekly)“A taxonomy of financial folly.” (The New Yorker)

Why do our headaches persist after we take a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a fifty-cent aspirin? Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup? When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we? In this newly revised and expanded edition of the groundbreaking New York Times bestseller, Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, we consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

#3,387 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Anyone who believes that humans are rational cost-benefit calculators, as per the economics perspective on human decision-making, needs to read this book. It adds to a recent body of literature, including Gigerenzer's "Gut Feelings," Fine's "A Mind of Its Own," Tavris and Aronson's "Mistakes Were Made (But not by Me"), and Gladwell's "Blink." So, this book, per se, does not really break new ground. However, it does make a contribution to the larger discussion. And much is at stake here, whether in terms of political decision-making (after all, our elected leaders are just like the rest of us in how we think) or daily decisions about what products to buy.The book addresses what the author refers to as one view of human nature (Page xix), "the rational economic model. . . " (For a simple discussion of expectations from the economics view of human nature, see the discussion on pages 64-65). In contrast, this book takes a different--and far more accurate view--of human nature. Dan Ariely says that (Page xix): ". . .this book is about human irrationality--about our distance from perfection." To the extent that government policy and the economic sphere accept the standard view of human rationality, they are basing decisions on an erroneous view of human nature. Will swift and certain punishment deter crime? If people are rational economic calculators, yes. If not? Forget about it. It's phony baloney. That's what is at stake with this book. The book covers a number of relevant topics as to how humans make decisions. We overweigh negative consequences, we make foolish decisions based on whether or not something is labeled as "free," social norms will often trump cost-benefit calculations, how anchoring of choices skews our decision-making, and so on. One of the nice features of this book is the outlining of various experiments that the author and his colleagues have carried out.He concludes that (Page 243): ". . .we are pawns in a game whose forces we largely fail to comprehend." A second lesson? Understand that key point and learn how to make decisions given our departure from the rational decision-making orientation. As the author says (Page 244): "Once we understand when and where we may make erroneous decisions, we can try to be more vigilant, force ourselves to think differently about those decisions, or use technology to overcome our inherent shortcomings."In one sense, being critical of how we make decisions is a bit wrongheaded. That's how people are. Shortcomings? Sure, but that's where we are and that's who we are. And, as Gigerenzer suggests, our flawed decision-making may actually, through the long evolutionary history of our species, do as well or better than economic models of decision-making. So, this is another useful work raising questions about the nature of human nature--and making us more human in the process.

Among the various books available that cover the topic of human behavior, Predictably Irrational is among the top ten (interested readers should also read Sway by Rom Brafman). It's not quite an economics book (for a much better analysis of the many failings of neoclassical economics, read Debunking Economics by Keen) and it's not quite a behavioral psychology book (read Sway) so it falls somewhere in the middle - and therein lies its main weakness. There are some very interesting anecdotes (for example, do you know why we think black pearls are valuable when originally no one wanted to buy them at any price?) and these are where most of the book's value lies. The principal weakness comes from Ariely's conclusions based on the work he's carried out. He acknowledges that we humans are "irrational" compared to the straw man of the "rational optimizer" beloved of neoclassical economic theory, but while some of his examples are interesting he fails to see the entire picture. Thus whereas Keen shows that the neoclassical model is computationally impossible, Ariely merely shows that we have different decision-making processes in two distinct contexts: interpersonal and financial. This is valid, but Ariely then goes on to show that he hasn't really explored the interpersonal context with any degree of rigor.A couple of examples will illustrate what I mean. In the first example Ariely talks about how companies strive to create a "social exchange" in the workplace because people generally work harder and more diligently in social exchange settings than in compensation-based settings. We can think of how we might keep on struggling to get a friend's piano up the stairs of a narrow apartment building long after we'd have given up if we were simply being paid $10 per hour by a stranger to perform the same task. So Ariely notes that companies try to exploit our social side in order to get more work out of us (he doesn't look at the ethics of this attempt, or even at its many infeasibilities). Then he suggests that in order to reinforce the social dynamic and avoid corrupting it with the financial dynamic (because it's not possible to combine the two) companies should not give bonuses but instead should send employees off on a paid-for vacation. The problem, of course, is that most employees don't want to be placed in a parent-child relationship. Most employees think of themselves as independent adults. Saying "here's a vacation we've arranged for you" violates an employee's independence. Worse still it assumes the employee's plans for their free time are irrelevant (the cost of leaving one's home, family, and friends for the duration of the enforced vacation are apparently zero where the company is concerned...). Obviously this recommendation would be disastrous under real-world conditions and one wonders how Ariely failed to think through his proposal.A second example of this failure to think things through comes with Ariely's analysis of cap-and-trade. Rightly he points out that when you set a price on something (in this case pollution) then people may elect to pay more in order to get more. Just as we might only take a single candy from a tray being passed around the group but might buy ten if the candies are being sold, so too might companies pollute less if pollution were a "social good" rather than a priced good. With cap-and-trade companies might simply elect to pay more in order to feel free to pollute more. So Ariely proposes making pollution a "social good." But again a moment's thought shows this to be absurd. Not only do we have far too many examples of companies being quite happy to pollute when it's a cost-free exercise, Ariely's own book shows that executives will ignore social factors when their focus in on financial rewards. As executives are almost exclusively motivated by fat financial rewards, the notion that they would take social norms into account when deciding whether or not (or how much) to pollute is like saying that investment bankers would put the needs of their clients and the financial system in general ahead of their own desire for the $100 million bonus they get from pushing CDOs onto unsuspecting dupes. So in the end the book is worth reading for its anecdotal value but not for Ariely's own conclusions or policy suggestions. He's not-quite an economist and not-quite a behavioral psychologist and ultimately that means he's not-quite useful as a guide to policy formulation on either the micro or the macro scales.

Review

Castleman knows the foster care system well—she was adopted when she was six from an orphanage. She wrote this story to draw attention to the flawed foster care system and to give a voice to foster and adopted kids. Sara’s story will tug at heart strings; readers will cheer for her to succeed, for she is a heroine in the style of The Great Gilly Hopkins (HarperCollins, 2004). This book is a must for middle school readers (Judith A. Hayn VOYA, Starred Review)

Sara Lost and Found follows main character Sara, and her older sister Anna through the many struggles of the foster care system. As described by Castleman herself, this book is inspired by actual events that happened to her as a child of parental abandonment and her journey through foster care systems. With that in mind, I felt this book beautifully explicates a very difficult subject matter to young readers, allowing insight and understanding of what it's really like to have your life shaken, and the compassion and love that defines sisterhood. Every page in this book is loaded with meaning and Castleman's style of writing solicits discussion into the deeper symbolism of the text.I personally loved this book and would suggest it to teachers and parents who really want to help develop their children's sympathy towards those around them.

Tough read. Well written as I felt such empathy for the girls. Glad it ended the way it did though it could easily have gone another way

Super fast delivery. great quality

Sara, age 10 and her sister Sister Anna, age 12 are abandoned by their parents. Their mother left home with barely a goodbye and their father was is in jail and struggles with drug addiction. Soon the sisters, despite their pleas, are placed in foster care. Sara, although younger, protects her older sister who is fragile from all of the trauma she has been through and we learn that this is their second time through the foster care system.Although the author, with her clear and crisp writing, allows us to feel the sisters intense pain over their losses and beautifully describes the conflict that Sara goes through as she realizes that her sister needs more help than she can give, I found it hard to fully immerse myself in the story. All I could think was that I have never heard or seen the social welfare system work as well as in this book. As a social worker I have seen hundred's of children go through the foster care system and it does not look like this. It is possible to have one good foster parent but I have not seen any kids go through the foster system (especially twice) and have such caring, astute, loving adults in their lives. Being in foster care is hard, and often borders on its own kind of neglect so it just felt surreal to read this story. So, three stars because of the portraits of two sisters who love each other, for a story that conveys the sadness and trauma of severe neglect but hampered by the picture perfect account of the foster system. Thank you to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

Their mama left them a while ago and their daddy leaves them for long stretches at a time. The two girls know not to answer the door if anyone comes knocking and they know how to survive when the food runs out. They let their imaginations take control as they chew on stolen paper towels. These towels become a juicy cheeseburgers and long succulent hot dogs; it’s something that they trained their mind to do as they chew on the dry bits of cloth. The girls have each other as their mama told them to take care of each other and they can do just that.Their story broke my heart. It seemed to begin when mama had been arrested for DUI and the girls were placed in separate foster homes. This separation broke Anna. The happy, fun- loving Anna returned to her sister Sara, broken and withdrawn with marks on her arms. She would not speak about what happened to her inside the walls of her foster home. The girls have had other experiences with foster families, some negative and some positive but their favorite place to be, is with the Silverman’s. They were grandparents to them. Daddy tries to be a good father but the bottle always calls for him and he answers, leaving him in shambles. He picks himself up, pays the price and tries to undo the damage that he has caused and starts over again. The bottle rules his world. The girls know the routine and with mother gone, they would rather stay home alone than be placed in foster care.Home alone, the girls are startled when police and Child Services come to their door. Sneaking out, the girls take to the streets. They are welcomed at the Silverman’s, their first stop; a stop the girls wished would be their last. I loved the warmth and the gentleness that this relationship bestowed. Their father is in jail and the girls must be placed in temporary foster care so they are now moved to another home. In their new temporary home, the parents try to provide a loving environment and the girls try to adjust to their new home. Anna has difficulties, she lashes out and they are moved sooner than originally planned. I hated to see these children moved as if they were items instead of people with feelings and emotions. I realize that this is what happens in foster care, children being moved around but it was hard reading about the emotions these children were feeling. The girls just wanted to go home with their father where they had a routine, a routine that was familiar and comfortable for them but was not ideal for them. These children needed stability and love and someone to provide that for them. The title speaks for itself with Sara and as for Anna, she needed someone to help her overcome the issues that she was confronting so she could be successful. I really enjoyed this novel. I liked how it touched on foster care and the children who are affected by it.

Sara Lost and Found is an enjoyable, adventurous, and insightful book for children ages 10 to 99. As a family psychotherapist, I will highly recommend Sara Lost and Found to adoptive and foster parents as a guide to help them understand the trauma that is unique to foster and adopted children. In addition, I often work with adults in helping them re-parent their abusive pasts, and Sara Lost and Found will make a wonderful companion for these adults, who are on their transformational journey of healing from their childhoods. Also, I highly recommend this book to children who share a similar path to either Sara or Anna, and highly recommend it to children who would like to understand the "road' of a child whose path may have been different from theirs. Thus, I view Sara Lost and Found to fit into a number of populations and would rate it a "must read"! I also highly recommend that Virginia Castleman creates public readings of her book.

I don't expect to find myself lost at sea, or lost on the Arctic ice sheet, or lost in the Gobi desert, but if I do I have an idea on how to find my way out now. I might get lost on a big Texas ranch though, and if I do I have a very good idea of how to find my way back now just by looking at the trees - more so than before I read this book.I bought it on a whim really, not because I need to know these techniques. Maybe that whim was out of a passing fancy to do some research on how people navigated tens of thousands of years ago. So I ordered it, opened it, and then stayed up a lot later than I should have three nights in a row as I devoured it.This book really delivers. I was fascinated by how the Polynesians navigated the gigantic Pacific Ocean thousands of years before the Europeans could build a boat. How they could find tiny little islands thousands of miles from anywhere before latitude and longitude and chronometers were a thought in anyone's mind. And the explanations are detailed. How no matter where the famous European sailors landed they found ancient cultures already in place. Even on those tiny little islands. Our ancestors knew navigation methods that modern man has not the slightest idea of, and this book explains what they knew and how they knew it. Along the way you learn some pretty cool skills, skills you are not likely to need, but if you ever do...you'll amaze your friends, conquer your enemies, and win the best looking women. It is an old book, written a long long time ago. Way before modern things like GPS were dreamed of. And that old-school style of writing is charming. This is an excellent book on many levels, a thoroughly enjoyable read, well written by a well spoken man, who lived a life of adventure that few of us could ever approach. You'll be informed, entertained, charmed, and learn a lot more about man's history of distribution than you'd at first think.

This is a great book. Really informative and a fun read. This was originally published in 1958, so it's from a pre-cell phone/internet era. Cool examples: Telling time by the stars, kind of bird+number of them = how far you are from land, determining north/south from termite mounds, etc.. Plus, the author compares and contrasts how different cultures all over the world navigated and treats each with respect (even if the vernacular is at times out of date). Pretty cool for 1958!

To review what I like about this book would go on and on. Basically the description covers all you need to really know about what's in it. It's all very illuminating... when you think you know quite a bit it turns out you probably don't. There's so much I learned from this book, and I was in the US Navy. They didn't cover a fraction of this in bootcamp. Even later on when I was in the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist program, which encompasses a supreme amount of navigation knowledge, they barely even touched on but a few of these methods. It's a shame... I wish this was a mandatory read for my shipmates and I.I did however find it a wee bit frustrating to read. I've never read a book that beats a dead horse so badly. Halfway through the book I felt that if I read one more word about how 'there's no sixth sense' I was going to burn it. There's even a whole chapter based on it... and this isn't the only point he beats to death either. He's very long-winded when it comes to describing things, for example, here he lists things a person can hear of the land while he is offshore (as if we didn't already know): "He can listen to the sound of chopping, sawmills, church bells, whistles, to the rumble of trains and other industrial and highway noises, to the lowing of cattle, the crowing or cackling of poultry, the bleating of sheep, to waterfalls and rapids or the sea's surf". --now, tell me that couldn't have been shortened a bit. Ugh!He also tends to give way too many examples from the pages of history or his own experience. While this is pretty informative and sometimes appreciated, it's not the most useful information... like I don't need you to prove what you just said; I believe you, man. Once he explained the point I didn't feel that I learned anything further from him then beating it into me with some explorer's logbook from the year 1577. I definitely feel this book could have been summed up in about 50 pages without leaving anything practically important out. In the end, the information contained within this book is well worth finishing it in spite of any frustrations you just might have while reading it... especially if you don't mind loading up on history facts.

When one is put in that situation that you believed you would never be in then reading this book could be the difference of finding your successful return. When with no cellphone, GPS or map and compass to assist you then reality hits.I have used this book information many times over the years and have taken the time to re-read.Being a traveller of remote and distant locations I find the book very helpful. I am sure it has contributed to my more timely return and assurance of arriving. Most of the time we become in need is when things happen that should not or are inexpected events. This book will help all who could find themselves in a place you know not where you are.The book will be of interest to those who have a love of the outdoors. The book makes you more aware of what is around you.The age of the books writting should not put you off reading this book.Harold Gatty has taken the time to remove the riddles that plagued early explorers. We know the names of those that made their destination but know only a few who did not arrive.Survival is getting to youre destination where ever it is. In towns, Bush, mountaians and at sea.Happy travelling and have adventures with confidence. In todays world we have gadgets but they are rarely available when required. This book is a default place when all else fails.

History of red teaming, yes. Value of red teaming, maybe. How to red team, no. No discussion on tools to break through biases or "think like the enemy." Disappointing purchase.

This is a great book to get introduced to red teaming and how it is used by different organizations and industries. I've been a technology red teamer for several years and Mr Zenko introduced new ways of using red teaming to me. For example, as I read and thought about how red teaming is used in law enforcement, I realized how I to apply those lessons in technology red teaming to help train network defenders. I really liked how he demonstrated red teaming in action by using clear and impactful examples from real events. I recommend checking the book out.

Likely my (favorable) bias on this subject. I agree with the author that the use of red-teaming and alternate analysis can (should) lead to better decisions. Sadly, as the author relates, some of the most hopeful exercises failed not because of the methods but because those who wish to hide shortcomings were able to confound the red-teamers. So even the best laid plans for analysis can be derailed due to bad intentions of various actors. Remain hopeful and try to integrate these methods into regular business activities, even if you refrain from calling your efforts "red-teaming."

This book is a great resource on red teaming, its history and the adaptable methodologies used to influence positive change with in organizations. It well written and well researched. I highly recommend it.

The author provided some good historic background and applications. He offers parameters on how/when Red Teaming should be structured. He described limited application outside of the military or intelligence realm. So if you like some good stories, he did a good job of describing how Red Teaming was applied in those areas.

This was perhaps one of the best reviews of red teaming that I have ever read. I've already recommended it to a number of people before I even finished reading it.

Great concept. Would have liked to see more discussion on the building of checklists.

Good read!
