I found the book very good reading. It was very detailed with great pictures of each house described with full details of visiting opportunities. It's truly a directory, but could be enjoyed as a smaller coffee table book.I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the Hudson River area houses but it's great for a study in historical architecture as well.

Lovely book.

This is a nice overview of the best of the estates along the Hudson. The book give a nice short history on the houses presented and the photos are nice, though the pictures could be more crisp. Having said that, I did enjoy the book and was just amazed at the variety in the styles of the houses from period to period; really a very informative book. If you are interested in this sort of thing, then you will certainly be pleased with this book, though the $50.00 price tag is a bit daunting.

If you love historical architecture, and the histories of old homes, then you shouldn't miss this book. The photographs alone make this a book worth owning, but the author has also included well written, indepth, and informative stories about these incrediable homes, their builders, owners and subsiquent owners. Reading this book has encouraged me to plan a trip to visit to the Hudson River Valley to see these beautiful places for myself.

This book is fantasic! I highly recommend it. It has loads of spectacular color photographs, and the mansions are breath taking. Being someone who has never visisted the area, this book really makes me consider a trip to New York, if only to see these mansions.

I just returned from 5 days in Naples (5/2010). This is a large (25" x 47"), easy to read, well detailed map. Street index on back. One reason for not giving it a higher rating is that the paper is light weight. Frequent use will no doubt cause it to tear. I would have preferred a thin, water-proof layer to both strengthen the paper and protect it against rain. Being as large as it is, it is thus difficult to use while simply walking within the city from site to site. For that, a map like the Streetwise map of Naples was easier to use. One very positive thing about this map is that all of the city is presented on one side (unlike the Streetwise map which places one half of the city on each of two sides) making it easier to tell distances and plan one's route as well as transportation.

Waste of trees. Poorly set up. No inset for the city center means it's close to useless if you are going by foot

Excellent map of Naples; very useful.

Steve Moore once again has put together a book of his work that is hilarious. I have followed In the Bleachers for years and consequently I remember seeing many of these before. That being said I found myself seeing them again (like the first time I saw them) and laughed out loud. Steve has the great ability to make things like injuries funny. If you are a sports fan, an athletic trainer, a coach or just someone that appreciates good humor then this book is for you. I can't wait for volume 2 of this to come out.

I have enjoyed Steve Moore's cartoons for many years. As a certified athletic trainer, I find this collection especially relevant and absolutely hilarious. I highly recommend.

Completely enjoyed this book! As an Athletic Trainer I appreciate the humor that Steve Moore provides with his insight! I recommend it to all but especially to any health professional who works in sports medicine.

I have found this book extremely helpful. It is a fantastic guidebook with lots of wonderful ideas. I appreciate her reassuring tone and grounded and inspiring techniques for making our home a sacred space. I feel as if it has helped us to really claim our new house as our own.

I love this book. This is one of those books I continue to keep around every time I clear out my excess books, though the pages are yellowed by now. Well written and easy to understand, it is an excellent reference manual. For a period of many years, whenever I wanted to create a space clearing that was in any way challenging or unusual, I would go back to Denise's book and review her suggestions/techniques. As a practicing shaman, it took me beyond my own training to the place where I have several extra tools (rituals)with which to work. One can never have too many tools in the shamanic bag.I was delighted to learn today that Denise Linn is also into past life therapy. I did not know this until I had written a book about this myself. Great information. Some parts of the book felt useless or boring, but most of the information has been great. She offers very interesting and unique ways to connect with your house and align soul and home together.

This book is one of the best books relating to energy and house clearing I've ever read. It is also a valuable resource for anyone who has interests in working with the four elemental. Denise Linn's book will take you to another level of understanding how to work with energy of your home and make your home a Sacred Space for you and your Family.

I really am enjoying this book. It is comprehensive and thorough in its coverage of many, many methods of clearing and purifying space. I'd like to give it five stars, but since I've stumbled on a few minor editing inconsistencies, I'm only giving it four. For instance, on page 118, about plant spirits, Ms. Linn says in a parenthetical insertion "(For how to find your totem plant see Chapter 14.)". Unfortunately, Chapter 14 doesn't give you this information. Earlier in the book we are directed to the Appendix for sources that sell air ionizers and ozone generators, appliances I know nothing about. There is no section in the appendix for this, and no source indicated. Minor beefs, yes, but irksome ones. This prevents me from giving this book more stars.

I gave this book to a dear friend who appears to be a boarder line hoarder. I can't say enough about this book! The approach to clearing your home is a marvelous revelation for the artistic and sensitive souls among us. It also makes perfect sense. Denise Linn is a true wonder, what an interesting life she's lead. Love her approach for attaining the perfect space to fit everyone's life!

She covers all the methods for clearing. You can use that models that make you most comfortable.

i find myself coming back to this book for tips on how to cleanse the space in my home and reaffirm my place in the grand scheme of things.There is no one way to dispel negative thoughts or energies the author provides options so I can choose what I need for the now which may change tomorrow.Thank you, Denise, for sharing your knowledge.

Why the 1/2-star rating for this timeless and influential classic by one of 19th-c. America's most important journalists?5 stars for this classic text -- which I've loved since I first read it in the 9th grade, as one of the texts required by my American History teacher. (Now a history teacher myself, I often share it with my students, who uniformly love it.)1/2 star for the fact that this edition of the book is a 'legal bootleg'. That is, an unnamed, mystery 'editor' has taken a book that has slipped into the public domain because the author died before 1927 (Bly died in 1922 and thus just missed the 1927 copyright cut-off); re-packaged it as an 'edited' and 'revised' edition (why isn't the editor named? why aren't the 'revisions and updates' annotated within the text, per the standard for edited histories?); and re-published it under the 'Create Space' imprimatur to enrich himself/herself without sharing a dime with Bly's estate or original publisher. (Ian L. Munro's publishing house produced the book in 1887.)This is so uncool to me as a historian, history teacher, and Nellie Bly super-fan that I have no problem undercutting the profits of the aforementioned 'legal bootlegger' by sharing the following information with anyone who is interested:(1) You can save your dough and read an estate-sanctioned, totally free, e-Book version of Bly's _Ten Days in a Madhouse_ at the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library website. Cut and paste the last 14 words of the previous sentence into your favorite search engine (I use the one that rhymes with Droogle or the one that rhymes with Tuck Tuck Moe) and the website will show up as one of the top search results.(2) Alternatively, if you'd like to listen to an estate-sanctioned, audio book version of Bly's work, then swap out the reference to the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library and add the words "Internet Archive." After reading all the great reviews on this book I was excited to be getting a copy and eagerly waited with intense anticipation, just to be extremely disappointed. I was left feeling like a major part of the book was missing. There were no illustrations just a reference to sketches at the end of the article. Very little was mentioned about the experiences while inside the Asylum. Everyone else must have read a different issue or something. I do NOT recommend buying this particular issue - ISBN# is in photos, as well as pic of the book cover and the "notation" about sketches. The are 52 pages/104 front and back so it doesn't appear to have pages missing, just content.

The book also includes two short articles on employment agencies and women working in paper box factories.What makes this publication different than others? There are hand drawn illustrations throughout other publications depicting Ms. Seaman at various stages of her investigations. The backs of those books feature pictures of Ms. Seaman and a list of words that might not be well-known to modern readers. The Annotations section offers an overview of Blackwell's Island Lunatic Asylum as well as notes on Ms. Seaman's participation. Her other books are also listed. This publication offers the main story and the two articles, and nothing else.Excellent book for those interested in history or just curious about this slice of life in New York over a century ago. Four stars.

Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who was an American journalist. She was born in May of 1864 and died in January 1922. While she was working for a newspaper in New York City she was given an undercover assignment to feign insanity and allow herself to be committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island in order to write an expose of the inhumane way the women in the Asylum were being treated by caretakers, nurses and even doctors. This book is the true account of what she observed while in that Asylum.She is amazed at how readily people in the medical profession proclaim her insane and how quickly they decide she needs to be committed to an Asylum. Once an inmate in the "Lunatic Asylum" she is dismayed when she sees the patients being taunted, laughed at, and even struck by nurses. The patients were also given inadequate clothing to keep them warm in a hospital that has no heat because the heat is turned on only for certain months of the year. She observes the cold, disgusting and inedible food that is served to the patients while the nurses are being served hot meals and being given fresh fruit.This book, which she wrote from notes she took while in the Asylum, singlehandedly brought about serious reform in this country in the way people are diagnosed as mentally incompetent and also in the way they are treated if they have to be committed. I can't say I "enjoyed" this book but it was very enlightening.
