About the Author

Dr. Ricky W. Griffin is Distinguished Professor of Management and the Blocker Chair in Business in Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1978, Dr. Griffin joined the faculty at the University of Missouri for three years before moving to Texas A&M in 1981. His research on task design and dysfunctional work behavior has appeared in the leading professional journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly and Journal of Management. He has served as editor of the Journal of Management and has been program chair and division chair of the Organizational Behavior Division and Program Chair of the Research Methods Division of the Academy, Program Chair and President of the Southwest Academy of Management, and a member of the Board of the Southern Management Association. He is a fellow of both the Academy of Management and the Southern Management Association. Dr. Griffin has taught organizational behavior, human resource management, international management, and research methods at all levels and has won several teaching awards. He is a frequent speaker to executive audiences and is the author of several widely used textbooks. Dr. Griffin was director of the Center for Human Resource Management at Texas A&M and just returned to the faculty at Mays after 11 years of full-time appointments as Management Department Head, Executive Associate Dean and Interim Dean. His current research interests include workplace culture, managerial skills development and decision making during times of crisis.

Even though I didn’t finish my course because of some teacher difficulties, I kept on reading the book. It was an easy read but very interesting. I loved the examples from big companies we all know and love.I’m an ESL student and this was very informative and understandable!

Rented for CLEP Exam...not a good read and was not as well organized as I would like. It did cover the material, some small terminology differences, but covered it. Not sure but may be a better book out there. Short story is I passed the CLEP after 2 weeks study but this book alone would not be sufficient in my opinion.

This book was in ALMOST new condition for a rental which I was very happy about! Only wear was a crease on the cover. But sadly didn't use it much. For the price, I'd say it's worth it to rent vs. buy this book.

This book was a great read! The book wasn't to dry and kept things interesting with real world facts.If you are interested in business, then this is a great book to start reading.

I used this for my Basic Management class and i did find this book very easy to read. It was easy to understand the terminology and the real world and business stories make it even more understanding and you even learn a thing or two about companies around now that you might have never known.

And man is so plastic a being that one can even conceive of the day when a thoroughly self-respecting citizen will crawl about on all fours, sporting a tail of brightly colored feathers as a sign of conformity to the order he lives in"The author presents this fragility of human existence (and their mind) with a collection of fictionalized stories of four men who succumb to the forces of changing political landscape, more or less consciously becoming victims of a historic situation.The book, although written in 20th century around the context of WWII is still relevant today to enrich one's understanding of multiple facets of existing world order.

I wish I could put this in the hands of every American and Russian. Milosz wrote this during the end of the World War as the Soviet Union spread it's authoritarian version of communism to the Eastern Europe.This book is scathing and humorous in it's treatment of that failed regime. He describes through personal experience, not only how liberals and progressives avoided the cultural police and gulags, but perhaps even more valuable, how his "comrades" changed to become part of this authoritarianism.I cannot recommend this book high enough for anyone who has read Godfather of the Kremlin, or Putin's Kleptocracy. This book covers the very beginning of the sort of regime Putin would seem to resurrect in the name of Empire and God.

Czeslaw Milosz lived through "interesting times". Educated in the 1920s in Lithuania, he lived in Poland at the time of the invasion of the Nazi armies in 1939. He saw personally what happens to a people when they are ground down and deprived of sustenance. He then lived through the "liberation" of Soviet Armies coming from Russia. He saw how slowly, most of his surviving writer-friends became tools of the new Polish state.The book covers 4 such people who are not fictitious. They are drawn from life. Milosz eventually had to break with the Polish Communist Party and go into exile, because he could no longer obey the tenants of Socialist Realism. That he is one of the most perceptive thinkers of the 20th century is obvious as you read the book. The 20th century was a long nightmare for many people in the world. Millions died from war, famine, and political decisions. Milosz saw the worst of it and lived to tell the story. And tell it well.

They say 'those not students of history are doomed to reapeat it'. In our current national and states rights climate this is a must now read. Very readable and the passing years since it was written provide a 'proof text' for the ideas discussed.

Milosz gives four dramatically presented types who succumbed to Party rule. When you read this book you see how understandable it is to "knuckle under." Not only were these men's lives at stake but their families. However, they make the adjustment by rationalizing their actions, and for one, he enjoys punishing other people. Only one of the "converts" is punished, a sort of gypsy like man who doesn't take life seriously. Milosz is not judgmental about those who gave in, as it was a combination of brainwashing, necessity, and wanting to be useful. If they had not joined the Communists, they would never be published. Not all the conversions were immediate, but took years. If is not a dated book in that it is about human nature and the same set of circumstances can always arise under different labels.

A chilling first person depiction of life in Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Poland) during and after WWII through the eyes of an intellectual. Milosz's depiction of the accommodations and sufferings of some of his literary peers of the time is eminently readable. The first few chapters may be a bit arcane, but it is worth persevering and reading to the end.

How to say amazing so everyone understands it? A fiction? A non-fiction? Considering the topic and world he's working with, the non-fiction is fiction. The billowing of US culture and politics and society at the present runs a frightening parallel for the future.

I was born in the early 90's, and never really understood the Cold War until I read this book. While it is almost certain that the author brings in his own personal discontent with the affairs of Communist Poland, he supports them with evidence and background. My only regret, having read this, is that only portions of it were assigned to our class. It combines psychology, history, and quality writing to carry a message that really helped me get an insight to the mindset of a whole generation faced with war and oppression. While it is clearly intended to make a point, it is fair, and everything that is portrayed throughout is key to an examination, not necessarily a condemnation, of the events that occurred in postwar Poland.

The book is for ages 4-8, but some of the pages are designed for a 4 yo. While others are for 7-8 yo.. against my personal opinion, the girls really enjoyed it

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle version comes with an access code to the Navigate 2 Essentials site. After extensively searching the book and contacting Amazon I was informed that the Kindle version does not have an access code despite falsely being advertised and sold with the impression that this would be included. If you buy the Kindle version just be aware that you will not gain access to the Navigate 2 Essentials site and will have to find an alternate means to an access code.

I'm currently taking an EMT course and this is definitely the handbook of it all. If you buy the new version, there's an online access code in the back cover that gives you access to online quizzes, summaries, outlined, audio book, etc. for 1year :) Definitely handy for reviewing when you're driving and also when you want to test yourself on the material. The book can also be a paper holder for strong winds and kill spiders, or knock someone down if this was thrown at them (it's thick with knowledge). 0_0

It's a big, fat, expensive book. It's got everything you need to know though! If someone breaks in your house, throw this at them! Then pick up the book and it will tell you exactly how to fix them. If you need it, buy it! Like I said, everything you need to know! It's also good at helping you sleep!

UPDATE: This book DOES come with an access code. HOWEVER, you need to confirm what access code you NEED first. This text book comes with ESSENTIALS access, not ADVANTAGE, PREFERRED or PREMIER. Many EMS classes require PREMIER so you need to make sure you are purchasing what you need.I originally rated this 5 stars. However, I'm changing it to 1. This whole access code nonsense is very deceptive, especially when many people believe it is what they need when it says "Essentials."

The physical version of this textbook is GINORMOUS. I hate carrying heavy textbooks, and prefer to use kindle versions whenever possible, that way I can take my tablet wherever I am and do some reading.Content wise, this version of the textbook has exactly what the physical version has. It is not, however, an exact replica of the page layout of the physical version. I don't really care about that, as long as the content is the same I will get what I need out of the book.One thing to note is that there is NOT an access code with this version. I called the JB Learning and purchased the access code as a standalone. When I bought the access code, I was able to use a discount code. I am not sure if that is something they always do, but it made the overall price of the kindle version textbook and the access code to be less than what the physical textbook would have been - so that is something to think about.As for the textbook itself...all l I can say is that it is a textbook. Course reading is not always exciting, but this book gets the job done, and is an integral part of the EMS training.

Bought brand new in paper back format description said the book had access code to Navigate 2, which it did, however when trying to use the code the website explicitly said the code had already been redeemed. How is this possible? The code should not have expired because the book itself was brand new. Book was great price but without access code it is unnerving and frustrating.

This book is needed for my EMT course...what I love about it most is that theres a scratcher inside..once you scratch it you go to their website, use the code and if you have an mp3 player, you can download the audio which reads each chapter word by word! It was very helpful in my EMT class. The workbook really helps you understand the material.

I love that this book has SO MANY practice questions. I was impressed by how fat it was! Lots of bang for your buck. You get vocabulary matching, 30-40 multiple choice, fill in the blanks, crossword and applied context multiple choice, fill in the bank and short answer questions for each chapter. On some chapters you also have anatomy labeling, It's a great resource for reviewing important material. The questions focus on a mix of vocabulary and essential concepts, but also have critical thinking questions such as a given scenario and logic of problem diagnosis and appropriate interventions.I LOVE THAT THE ANSWER KEY INCLUDES PAGE NUMBERS FROM THE TEXTBOOK SO YOU CAN FIND THE EXPLANATION SO EASILY.It wasn't required for my EMT course, but even if I was cash-strapped I still highly recommend this workbook. Definitely helped me retain information better after reading each chapter and were great for review prior to tests.

I had the good luck of listening to this on a long drive. The first question, whether this would be of interest to non-lawyers, is certainly yes. As long as you like American history, you will like this. The book takes a small slice of history and tells it almost novelistically. You can see the ruddy cheeks, mahogany paneling, feel the orations of Daniel Webster, learn about his expertise in politics, his high fees, and his decline. I remember so many cases from American History of yore that were fully explicated here - the Dartmouth College case - e.g. - and that I didn't quite get in high school or college. The book starts at Jamestown, and you learn of the horrors of that colony, which was a corporation, as was Plymouth Bay to the north. One learns about the precise reasons for the Boston Tea Party, not just the flaccid story of the courageous revolutionaries. Winkler tells us that all of the civil rights laws started with the rights of corporations, not people and that the first two - Dred Scott and a woman's right to be a lawyer - failed.The book hits a crescendo in the turn of the 20th Century and does not dwell on the present-day public outrages of Citizen's United and Hobby Lobby, but mentions them hint by hint throughout the narrative, giving a context to present day jurisprudence. All in all, this was for me a great "listen." The narrator was perfectly fine, but I bet the author wanted to tell the story, it is so assiduously researched and described in technicolor.

This book was hard to put down as it talks about how rich corporations used their influences on the Supreme Court to be considered persons under the 14th Amendment in order to get protection under the constitution. The 14th Amendment (along with the 13th and 15th) was written to integrate freed slaves legally into society, was usurped by the corporations to not be considered organizations but a gathering of people. The last remaining drafter of the 14th Amendment lied to convince the Supremes that Corporations were part of the definition of "persons as stated in the Amendment. A study done shows in a 30 year period some 300 14 Amendment cases were brought before the Supreme Court. Of those only 25 were race related in which was voted down every time (included I assume the infamous "Pleussy"). The rest were Corporate right's related which the corporations won every time.Funny how Conservatives and their like-minded Justices claim to narrowly define the Constitution to what is written rather than the intent (after all neither negro's nor slaves are mentioned in the 14 Amendment) Conservative interpretations have been used against their intended subjects (Like Pleussy), but when cases like Loving (Interacial marriage), Brown, and Gay marriage are decided using the intent of the Amendment those same Conservatives who have been twisting the amendment for corporations accuse those rulings of a "radical court exceeding its authority"People who are wondering how "Citizens United" and "Hobby Lobby" were decided need to know this is the result of a 150-year legal battle to get Corporations rights they don't deserve. I've been waiting for someone to put this information together in one book and this is it.

All noses are pressed into Professor Winkler's book as heads bob in amazement at just how many rights corporations have been able to accumulate for themselves over the years.This book is a detailed walk through a lot of legal history. It is well-written, is relentlessly interesting, discusses a large cast of colorful characters who participated in this history, and is as necessary a read as you'll find on today's book shelves. You do not need to be an attorney to profit from reading this book. Its only disappointing feature is its honesty: this is a complex history. Better to understand it fully, than to pretend that history was simpler than it has been.

Just so clear and conceivable.The chapters on quantum physics were much less clear, reading as though he'd written the last half of the book in a terrible hurry over a wet weekend!It's an unusual hypothesis he proposes, and despite some clever wordplay, the actual link to our brain's physiology was turbid and never actually discussed.I'd strongly recommend this book for anyone with fourth-year medical training or more. The average reader is likely to get lost in all the early details, and perhaps missing out on the more generally illuminating second half.A great day's read.

Once in a while I get tired of publishers promoting books for "wider" audiences by, well, fooling the shopper! Right up front, Loewenstein admits that this book is really about sensory biology and physics, and "at the time of writing" there were some new revelations in quantum computing vs. parallel processing.This book is categorically NOT revelatory about "mind." The author spends many wonderful and valuable pages discussing DEEP issues about vision (a high percentage of the brain is about vision), and the book is a must read if you're at all interested in the intesection of physics, biology and "below ion potential" spiking-- what goes on atomically. Of course VERY LITTLE is known about this right now, and the author is intellectually honest in admitting a lot of what he explains is speculative when it gets to superposition issues.Another shot at the publisher-- promotions also say there is very little math here, and even the author states that he only has a few brief formulas at the end which we can skip. Then, he goes on to fill the book with breathtaking and valuable, but VERY DIFFICULT math concepts, explained in prose! After all, the foundation math in almost all of QM relies on Hermitian linear operators acting in Hilbert space on state vectors or wave functions. Even at the most basic level, these require robust linear algebra. Judge the "quantum" part of what you hear about this book accordingly!Very little of this book really is about consciousness. The author has even stated that he started out to write that kind of book but found that physics works much better when explaining sensory mechanics. That's a subtle way of being humble and admitting we know VERY little about quantum computing at subatomic, room temperature coordinates. In fact, Loewenstein is again intellectually honest enough to say his goal is to promote the "EXPECTATION that consciousness has a physics explanation" (my emphasis).The crux of what's being glossed over there is that we don't yet have a good understanding of the interface between thought and charge separation - spiking (pure dynamical systems electronics), let alone quantum. A wonderful overview of this is Tse's new book: The Neural Basis of Free Will: Criterial Causation. On the other hand, to lay a reductionist foundation, Loewenstein does a magnificent job of detailing quantum effects in information theory, but fails to relate it to consciousness in a credible way (although he also admits he's not really trying to do that!).If you enjoy the now somewhat bypassed (in Neurology) computational reduction, you will REALLY like Kurzweil: How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed, which does connect it very convincingly to at least decision theory. As a couple year older "anticipation" of Tse and Kurzweil above, Lauwereyns has some amazing connections between neural circuits, coincident signals, bias and choice in: The Anatomy of Bias: How Neural Circuits Weigh the Options.I probably don't have to mention Buzsaki as other reviewers have as the bible of this field, but he's here in case you haven't found him: Rhythms of the Brain. His book is deeply physiological and at a graduate neuro level. All three of the above make great "before and after" supplements to Loewenstein.I'm not looking for a conditioned response, but do want you to gauge your expectations if you're expecting to see clear connections between quantum computing and consciousness-- the quantum parts are valuable, fun and enlightening, and certainly not simple, but are really about sensory and particularly visual topics. Even there, no sense of mystery is lost, we're at kindergarten level here in understanding what's going on. For example, until 10 years ago we couldn't even understand why "fixing" adult blindness physically didn't result in sight (it's about information processing), and we still don't understand how a fingertip touching a desk converts that mechanical energy into electrical without a tiny turbine or magnetic field! If we don't yet "get" even TOUCH at an ion/charge separation electronic level, how much do we really understand quantum mechanisms? Please do get this book, but knowing that the publisher's promos about consciousness, mind, and especially math when it comes to quantum computing are a little misleading, for the purpose of "not scaring off" a larger audience, even though this book is written at the senior MIT undergrad level in my opinion, and much more specialized in sense than "mind."Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

The words physics, quantum and brain are clearly three words that will engender fear in almost every heart, but take heart. Be forewarned, this book is not an easy read. Those who stay the course will find the climb well worth the effort and will have a different world view. Even if you don't understand all of the material, press on, please. You will come out the other side smarter and with a new view of yourself, others and the universe. Take the trip again, please. Everyone should take this book and work their way through it.

Book is best understood by reading it at least twice--some pretty complicated concepts for the non scientist layman. The author provides a new way to try and understand what makes us (and other sentinent beings) tick!The author is an amazing person who cites countless past and present luminaries/experts in various fields, made possible by his over 60 years of research, and teaching in the field of neurobiology. Provides ample documentation for various explanantions and concepts. A very worthwhile read that started on my Kindle, and I liked it so much I ordered a hard copy.
