I read the Seven Year Old Wonder to my small homeshchool class, who loved Sylvia's adventures and remembered details from previous chapters that I did not! I was very excited to order the eight year old legend book, knowing that it was not the same characters, but hoping for a similar feeling. Very different, less soft, more abrupt short stories.-The stories are interesting to adults and children alike-Messages appropriate for my students who enjoyed them, Waldorf 2nd grade.-Each chapter is a completely different legend, no continuity, chaoter titles do t share the moral of the stories

We are using this book as a 2nd grade reader and love it. The stories on not just well written but there are many strong female characters. The illustrations are a lovely complement to the writing.

I was disappointed in how much of this book needed to be edited. Too much death and dying. We loved the Seventh Year Wonder book.

Great book and great seller. I received this book right away and with no issues. I recommend this book and this seller.

Great book for an 8 year old

This is a rather insipid colorless retelling of some of the well known Jataka tales concerning the previous incarnations of the Buddha. Most are told as simple morality fables with animals as primary characters and thus often marketed to children. This collection was developed for use in Waldorf schools and are stripped of the exoticism and folkloric quality that make such tales fun for children and adults. Keep looking- there are far better collections of the Jataka tales available for children. Also, the illustrations are black & white, lack imagination and add nothing to the stories.

Yes, time to address the elephant in the room. Even with the (in my opinion) reveal of the twist ending of the wedding themed Batman #50 issue casting a shadow over this volume, Tom King's Batman run remains one of the best interpretations of the Dark Knight in recent memory. Starting with a dark one shot about a trust fund kid who wants to emulate Bruce Wayne in all the worst ways, then an inter dimensional story co starring Wonder Woman, next a solid story starring Poison Ivy, and finally a charming one shot about Catwoman's search for a wedding dress. The writing is top notch all the way through, though the weaker story arc for me was the one starring Wonder Woman. In this arc Diana and Bruce are sent to another dimension to fight an unending horde usually held at bay by a lone warrior (they decide to literally give him a break) only for it to turn out that time passes slowly there and one of our hours is almost a decade for them. The entire arc is seemingly meant to tease a will they won't they between Diana and Batman that doesn't go anywhere. The Poison Ivy story is stronger thanks to the great exploration of Batman's crazy ability to plan his way out of anything; Ivy manages to take over the entire world with mind controlling spores in the world's food supply only to have Batman and Catwoman hold out against her. The story also seeks to answer the recent conundrum of whether Ivy is more of an anti-hero than an outright villain. The artwork is solid throughout, but the standout issues are those drawn by Joelle Jones (who provided the cover art to the volume and the one shot about Selina "shopping" for her dress). Spoilers, but yes, even knowing that for now the Cat and Bat won't tie the knot the book remains a great read.

3.5 starsI was extremely excited for Tom King to take over Batman. His first three forays in comics were incredible hits (Sheriff of Babylon, the Omega Men, Vision). I was displeased with the first two volumes Batman, but gave recent volumes a go when they appeared on sale on kindle.Unlike the aforementioned comics, King has struggled to find his voice with Batman. Starting with volume four, he found it. Four and five were very good. This falls back a little, but is still nicely done. The dialogue is pretty good. The art is fine. There is a story about a rich kid who idolizes Bruce Wayne. He loses his parents at a young age and Bruce sympathizes. It doesn't really work. The Wonder Woman story is right out of science fiction where time passes differently - it was a nice set up but King doesn't take the plot leap that he teed up here. The Poison Ivy story is the best one, but it misses the mark. Ivy is made too powerful here.Despite my criticisms, it is a nice trade where King continues to develop Bruce and Selina's relationship. Because this is new territory, Selina Kyle is the most interesting character.

I'm in the minority in that - while I love Court of Owls - I find Scott Snyder's previous Batman comics to be too pretentiously wordy, gross, bleak, and macho. Consequently, this Tom King storyline is the perfect course correction. Emotional, character-driven, less relebtlessly grimdark, with a more sympathetic Batman and well-written women characters. Fantastic.

I enjoyed the very snappy dialog between Bat and Cat, and the stories seem well crafted. But I have been reading comics for a while, now, and The Gentle Man story made me wince. Because, in essence, I've read it before. Action Comics #761 is basically the same story, but with Diana and Kal. Same temptation, same result. Great as a homage, but a redo, nonetheless.

I hate that there is so much media coverage around this storyline and that the trades are coming out late, but none of that is the fault of the writer and artists. King keeps churning out one excellent story after another. I absolutely love every page from the beautiful art to the fantastic lettering.

A strong build up to the wedding. The art is among the best that’s come out from DC. If you know what happens in 50, don’t let the result curve your opinion. 50 was just one issue. Everything before and after are more important. This builds to Catwoman in ways no other writer has done before

really good art with an okey story

Great!!

While a book of this nature is timely and would be welcome, it must be a book where scientific accuracy is above reproach. I found a number of errors that make me call into question the remainder of the information. It was researched heavily, but still misinformation made it into the book.A note here before I continue. I am in upper management of a mosquito control district, so I am quite informed about mosquito disease issues that are problematic here in the United States. With that said, some issues with her research include her information on West Nile virus and dengue in Florida. Her discussion of West Nile virus early in the book is a mixture of fact and conjecture. No one is really sure how West Nile first got started in this country (in Queens, New York), but most experts believe that the most likely scenario was either mosquitoes that hitch hiked aboard commercial airline flights, cargo flights or it was introduced through the illegal trade in rare and exotic birds. The author makes the claim that the disease had probably been introduced by way of migratory birds along the Atlantic flyway. The big problem is that, while these birds do get together during the summer in the Arctic, their migration routes take them over New York as the mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile (Culex sps.) are heading into winter hibernation. In addition, the birds most susceptible to West Nile are not birds found along this flyway. Birds that summer in the Arctic are geese, ducks, etc. and they are very resistant to this virus. It is pretty uncommon to find the virus in their blood, and if it is, it is at a very low threshold. Crows and other corvids, which are heavily affected y the disease and are the reservoir for it don't winter there and commute south, making this an unlikely method of transmission. Her treatment of the dengue outbreak in South Florida is also riddled with inaccuracies. Yes, there were a number of abandoned pools in the housing meltdown at about the time of the dengue outbreak. And, swimming pools were allowed to go "green", which means the water turns fetid. Her claim that they are out of sight of mosquito control experts is ludicrous, however. Most mosquito control districts use either images from satellites or aerial photography. The "green" pools stand out like a sore thumb and the districts can them treat them. In addition, neighbors tend to squeal when there is a large influx of mosquitoes. What makes this a particularly erroneous section, however, is that the species of mosquito that likes to breed in fetid water is the Culex sps., which can transmit West Nile disease and a number of other disease, but cannot transmit dengue. That requires the Aedes sps. which has been present in South Florida (and a lot of the rest of the country) for years. That particular type mosquito hates fetid water and likes to breed in containers, tires and other places where clean rainwater collects. In a roundabout way, the foreclosure crisis may have been to partially to blame, but not because of the swimming pools, but rather because people being evicted tend to leave junk on the property, such as tires, old pots and containers. The dengue outbreak was likely caused by a lot of factors, including weather, but also by the arrival of infected people into the South Florida region. Dengue is endemic in numerous Caribbean islands, as well as most of Central and South America. If visitors to the country that were infected with dengue came in the right numbers, the disease would flourish. Finally, she chastises the scientific community for not searching for new diseases more quickly. And while that may sound valid, remember that there are thousands, if not millions, of diseases living in animals around the world that have not spread to humans. The majority of time spent looking for new diseases in a given area is spent looking for diseases known to be transmitted to man and to cause death and disablement A good example would be the Zika virus now making the news. This was first identified decades ago in Africa, but it never caused any harm to humans, so it was ignored. It was only when it started to appear in South America that humans became seriously impacted. Now it is on the watch list and testing is being done to locate it.Overall, I think she tried to write a valid book, but entered into areas where she had no expertise and failed to consult specialists in those fields. It is one thing to read papers on disease, but another to talk to someone who works with it day in and day out. An expert can give you the consesnus science pretty quickly, but you need to read a lot of different papers to find a good mix of information. My recommendation would be to pass this over. There are other, better books out there, and given the problems found by me and others with expertise, it makes me question all of the science in the book..

I wish I had read the New York Times Book Review before spending time and money on this book. The review notes, “reads like a boilerplate list of technocratic fixes that have been much discussed, or worse debunked.”The reviewer, Laurie Garrett, isn’t some unqualified crank. She is a science journalist who received a Pulitzer for her work on the 1995 Ebola outbreak.“Pandemic” has a wandering and disjointed feel to it as though the author never quite settled on the core of the story. I asked myself more than once if the book was about cholera? A random tour through the influenza viruses? Or evil governments? It was hard to find an original point in “Pandemic”. This genre is saturated with books that have already covered our own species’ culpability in increasing the spread of infectious diseases. One such book is David Quammen’s, “Spillover”. It is superbly researched and written. In contrast, “Pandemic” contains errors, mis-statements, and oversights. Not all are major, but together they diminished my reading experience. Here are a few, drawn from the first pages of the book:1. On page 10 the author writes, “scores of MRSA bacilli”. Pairing the term, “bacilli” with MRSA is wrong, as “bacilli” is another name for rod-shaped bacteria as well as bacteria in the genus Bacillus. The MRSA bacterium (Staphylococcus aureus) is neither. S. aureus is spherical, the general term for which is “cocci”. Nor is S. aureus in the genus Bacillus. (This error is especially surprising as the author experienced MRSA).2. On page 15, referring to the virus that would later be named SARS, the author writes that the virus started infecting people in November 2003. But then on page 109 we learn that in 2002 the Chinese withheld information about SARS. So when was the first infection? The SARS timeline of the CDC, as well as Quammen’s coverage in “Spillover”, are consistent with one another. Both peg November 2002 as the time that SARS started infecting people. Shah should have taken advantage of over a decade’s worth of post-SARS epidemiological research to get the story right.3. On page 18 we are introduced to copepods, tiny marine organisms that harbor the bacterium causing cholera. Shah tells us that copepods “can’t swim”. But copepods are a huge and diverse group of organisms. It took a few seconds of Googling to find that whole orders of copepods do indeed swim. So do the copepods that carry cholera swim? I still don’t know. These problems (and more) made me wonder about the accuracy of other material in the book in which I have less background. The “I’m-a-clever-muck-raker-journalist” persona of the author grated at times. The description of trying to find a wet market in China reads like a predictable “gotcha” as did parts of the section on Haiti. It took away my sense of suspense about what would happen next. If you like reading these types of descriptions, those in “Spillover” are more engaging and realistic. Quammen inserts himself far less into the story, and relies on scientists and locals in his vignettes of places and diseases.Near the end of the book, still looking for a thread to link the smattering of sometimes-facts in the narrative, the author writes some overly-speculative passages. One, which goes on (and on), insists that pathogens have pretty much single-handedly determined the course of human evolution. This is preposterous. It’s also wrong, as consulting any modern textbook on human evolution would reveal. The “us versus them” frame of the author leads her to a lop-sided and erroneous view of the human immune system. New science over the past decade shows that the microorganisms indigenous to our bodies are critical for the human immune system to function properly. In many cases their genes act like a puppeteer, regulating (or not) the expression of genes critical to our well-being.A spate of well-researched popular books explore the findings from this new area of science, called the human microbiome, and how it is rapidly re-shaping old ideas about human disease, health, and evolution. Among them are “Missing Microbes” by Martin Blaser and “An Epidemic of Absence”, by Moises Velazquez-Manoff.But like me, if you do enjoy reading about the disease-causing microbes, I would recommend “Spillover” by David Quammen. It does not suffer from shoddy research leading to speculative passages. And most of all, it is a good read.

I went in with a positive view on the book after hearing some good interviews with the author, but found it a very disappointing read. I'm not an epidemiologist, but I was able to pick out some errors and sections that were pure conjecture (which she does not labeled as such). That makes me doubt the parts that sounded alright to me, but I don't know as much about.Ultimately, I left the book no better informed than I was when I started it.She does tell personal stories well, which probably explains why she gives such excellent interviews.

This book is essentially a history of cholera—which is interesting enough. Clearly, a lot of research has gone into it and there are several instances of intriguing synthesis (particularly the chapter on microbial biomes). However, I found it rather irrelevantly alarmist; brimming with weak, but dramatic, analogies and comparisons; generally poorly referenced/cited. While I am convinced the author is a talented journalist, there are some misinterpretations and deceptively partial descriptions of data. A good read, but make sure you read other works, too, (I enjoyed Spillover) for a more balanced and fuller view.In the audio version, the reader also mispronounces several key words; which is irritating.

Yet another fear and loathing in the Big Pharma research world. She despises even the Gates Foundation for trying to eradicate malaria, '...they have no agenda that we know of...'Of course, climate change brought on by hydrocarbon use is the villain. As is modern life, capitalism, multi-national corporations and Big Pharma. How excruciatingly boring.Try The Next Pandemic or Contagion & Chaos.

Goes far too deeply into areas that aren't important to the practitioner in the grand scheme of things. I don't necessarily care about the history of the word Scrum or Agile, or how bad waterfall methods are etc. Buried within this type of content is the applicable stuff, often not articulated as well as the aforementioned free guides (like the one from Scrum.org).I bought this because it was on the reading list for Product Owner on Scrum.org. I haven't taken the certification test, so I don't know if the fluff will be on the exam or not, so until I know that I can't really say if one should skip this if their intention is to pass the Product Owner certification exam. If you are just looking for a good Scrum guide, look elsewhere. I've heard great things about Essential Scrum.

Scrum - A Pocket Guide book really explained in detail and in broader context plenty of information about the basic of scrum - roles, principles, rules and Scrum on the next level. I couldn't be more happier as an experience Agile practitioner myself I have learned a great deal about Scrum on top of what I already knew. The book is very handy and is essential guideline for anyone working as part of a scrum team or coaching others in applying the framework for themselves.

Usually when we start our adventure with Scrum, we focus on what is the most visible and seemingly the easiest to change or introduce: meetings, artifacts, new roles. Very quickly we loose the essence of agility, understanding why we do it.I recommend this book to anyone that either begins his adventure with Scrum or just... hit the wall. I wish I had read it before. With this book you will understand extremely important foundations of Scrum and answers for all your "whys" based on empirical approach, inspect&adapt and essence of self-organization.

Helped me pass the Scrum Master certification test level 1.

For me it was a best book for understanding not only scrum itself but what need to change and what will change when you transforming organization. So clever and so simple!

Used it to help with pulling together a new team. They found it easy to digest and provide many of the answers they would have needed

This served as a good supplement to my main course materials.

Long enough to give a brief understanding of agile and short enough that you can read it in an afternoon.

Whose Pharaohs?: Archæology, Museums, and Egyptian National Identity from Napoleon to World War I

From Library Journal

In his Rape of the Nile, Brian Fagan presented a popular survey showing how Europeans and later Americans descended upon Egypt as soldiers, tourists, and scholars to loot the country's ancient heritage with no concern for the aspirations of the Egyptians themselves. Fred Bratton's A History of Egyptian Archaeology traced the development of modern Egyptology with no reference to Egyptian scholars. Reid (history, Georgia State Univ.), the author of several books on the Middle East, here offers a scholarly assessment of the reaction of the Egyptian intelligentsia to the plundering and control of the nation's antiquities and the role these activities played in the growth of Egyptian nationalism. As Reid shows, the Europeans established museums for Pharaonic artifacts but paid little or no attention to the Coptic and Islamic architectural and artistic legacy. The Egyptians took it upon themselves to found museums and institutions to preserve and study these treasures. Reid documents the tensions between the Egyptians and the Europeans who administered Egyptian institutions in a lively narrative with full references and an extensive bibliography. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries. Edward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib. Syst., Ft. Pierce, FLCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

#727,541 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This was a book for one of my classes at school. I expected a lot going into it, as the topic should have been extremely interesting to someone who loves history. But the book is EXTREMELY boring, more of an outright listing of a sequence of events than an explanation of them or the circumstances surrounding them. It's also very sloppy and unorganized. Reid doesn't stay with any one person, region, time period, or theme long enough for what's he's writing to make sense; instead, he constantly jumps around, making it necessary to keep a separate, written list of people and places if you want to make any sense of what's going on.

The wholesale looting of the Baghdad Museum on Apr. 11-12, which U.S. troops did nothing to prevent, has lent a fresh plangency and interest to this remarkable new book about history, culture, museums, caretakers, theft, corruption and the dogfights between the West and Islam over antiquities vastly older than either culture. In two days in Baghdad, thousands of priceless treasures up to 5,000 years old have disappeared into the pockets and pickup trucks of larcenous mobs. However the Bush administration's Iraqi adventure is seen a century from now, the loss to human history and culture it occasioned is probably irreparable. Artifacts older than Abraham the patriarch have been stolen, ruinously dispersed, probably destined to be melted down for modern bangles. They will exist only in photographs, if at all, for the mobs destroyed the museum's archives as well, according to the New York Times. Donald Malcolm Reid, a professor of history at Georgia State University, has assembled a very clear, comprehensive account of another, longer, more complex process of ruin, preservation and expropriation. In this sharply written, poignantly illustrated and lucidly organized book, Reid describes how Egyptian civilization was rediscovered by Europe after Napoleon invaded the place in the early 19th century, and how its treasures were first plundered, then exported, then preserved by Europeans who generally regarded the country as their own private piggy-bank. The living Egyptians they encountered were, in their eyes, little more than ignorant Muslim fanatics. But they weren't. As Reid makes clear, a handful of enlightened Egyptian scholars were fascinated by the Pharaohs and were proud of their land's past. One, named Rifaa al-Tahtawi, wrote a history of ancient Egypt in Arabic in 1868 after studying the land and its monuments for nearly 35 years. Even earlier Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti, another scholar, had warned of the dangers of a European invasion of Egypt when Napoleon arrived with his armies in 1798. His words could come from an Iraqi citizen interviewed on CNN today: "This is the beginning of a period marked by great battles; serious results were suddenly produced in a frightening manner; miseries multiplied without end, the course of things was troubled, the common meaning of life was corrupted and destruction overtook it and the devastation was general." Worse was to come. Napoleon brought with him a remarkable entourage of scholars headed by the brilliant libertine, Vivant Denon, and the result was the monumental "Description de L'Egypte," one of the most beautiful multi-volume works of art and science ever published, a work so gorgeous that collectors commissioned special bookcases decorated with gilt sphinxes to hold it, and nothing but it. But the result of the Napoleonic expedition, and its "Description," was ruinous, as Reid makes clear. A kind of Egyptian gold-rush opened up within the conquered country, and British and German scholars and diplomats descended on Egypt like locusts, determined to rescue it from itself and take home as many antiquities as possible in the process. The Rosetta Stone was one of the earliest spoils of war, found by the French, captured by the British in 1801 and today in the British Museum in London. (Americans arrived too late: Not until 1924 did the University of Chicago set up a permanent bureau in Cairo.) After the first rampage of looting perhaps because the antiquities were so infernally heavy to transport, perhaps because the Europeans thought they'd be occupying Egypt in perpetuity another, subtler form of sequestration followed. The French Egyptologist, Auguste Mariette, decided it might be a good idea to set up a museum of antiquities in Egypt itself. It is the ancestor of the modern Cairo Museum, but Mariette was opposed to letting native Egyptians inside: "Egypt is still too young in the new life which she has just received to have a public easily impressed in matters of archeology and art," he explained. This is one of many ironies that enliven Reid's text, and this book can be read on several levels, as a history of archeology, of politics and warfare, of culture, of prejudices and superstitions, both Egyptian and European, Western and Islamic. Reid tells it all very clearly, and unflinchingly. Egyptians were finally allowed into their museum in 1915 and could get in free on Tuesdays. Some rubbed up against the antiquities "as a cure for various ills," and the Baedeker guide counseled European visitors to avoid the museum on Tuesdays when "Arab visitors of the lower classes" flocked in. Some very famous Egyptologists, among them E. A. Wallis Budge and Gaston Maspero, emerge from Reid's pages in all their roguish glory, as brilliant thieves and snobs. Maspero's 13-volume "History of Egypt" now fetches fancy prices on abebooks.com and Budge's treatises ancient Egyptian religion are available in Dover paperback reprints. Reid exposes their thefts and prejudices very artfully. This is above all a magnanimous book, an attempt at making restitution in ink for what has been stolen in stone. It is hard not to sympathize as Reid quotes the Egyptian scholar Ali Mubarak, who issued a huge 20-volume topographical encyclopedia of Egypt in 1887, with this humble, honest preface, expressing Arab humanism at its best: "We look upon these works but do not know the circumstances of their creation, we wander through them but do not know who made them... But it is our duty to know these things, for it is not fitting for us to remain in ignorance of our country or neglect the monuments of our ancestors. They are a moral lesson to the reflective mind, a memorial to the thoughtful soul... "For what our ancestors have left behind stirs in us the desire to follow in their footsteps, and to produce for our times what they produced for theirs; to strive to be useful even as they strove."
