America's most important journalists?5 stars for this classic text -- which I've loved since I first read it in the 9th grade, as one of the texts required by my American History teacher. (Now a history teacher myself, I often share it with my students, who uniformly love it.)1/2 star for the fact that this edition of the book is a 'legal bootleg'. That is, an unnamed, mystery 'editor' has taken a book that has slipped into the public domain because the author died before 1927 (Bly died in 1922 and thus just missed the 1927 copyright cut-off); re-packaged it as an 'edited' and 'revised' edition (why isn't the editor named? why aren't the 'revisions and updates' annotated within the text, per the standard for edited histories?); and re-published it under the 'Create Space' imprimatur to enrich himself/herself without sharing a dime with Bly's estate or original publisher. (Ian L. Munro's publishing house produced the book in 1887.)This is so uncool to me as a historian, history teacher, and Nellie Bly super-fan that I have no problem undercutting the profits of the aforementioned 'legal bootlegger' by sharing the following information with anyone who is interested:(1) You can save your dough and read an estate-sanctioned, totally free, e-Book version of Bly's _Ten Days in a Madhouse_ at the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library website. After reading all the great reviews on this book I was excited to be getting a copy and eagerly waited with intense anticipation, just to be extremely disappointed. I was left feeling like a major part of the book was missing. There were no illustrations just a reference to sketches at the end of the article. Very little was mentioned about the experiences while inside the Asylum. Everyone else must have read a different issue or something. I do NOT recommend buying this particular issue - ISBN# is in photos, as well as pic of the book cover and the "notation" about sketches. The are 52 pages/104 front and back so it doesn't appear to have pages missing, just content.

Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who was an American journalist. She was born in May of 1864 and died in January 1922. While she was working for a newspaper in New York City she was given an undercover assignment to feign insanity and allow herself to be committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island in order to write an expose of the inhumane way the women in the Asylum were being treated by caretakers, nurses and even doctors. This book is the true account of what she observed while in that Asylum.She is amazed at how readily people in the medical profession proclaim her insane and how quickly they decide she needs to be committed to an Asylum. Once an inmate in the "Lunatic Asylum" she is dismayed when she sees the patients being taunted, laughed at, and even struck by nurses. The patients were also given inadequate clothing to keep them warm in a hospital that has no heat because the heat is turned on only for certain months of the year. She observes the cold, disgusting and inedible food that is served to the patients while the nurses are being served hot meals and being given fresh fruit.This book, which she wrote from notes she took while in the Asylum, singlehandedly brought about serious reform in this country in the way people are diagnosed as mentally incompetent and also in the way they are treated if they have to be committed. I can't say I "enjoyed" this book but it was very enlightening.

I was unaware of the Warrior Cat series created by Erin Hunter until recently. I usually do not read books aimed at children but because I am a cat lover and I am also involved in the warrior arts and its philosophy, I started reading some of the books in this series. The first book I read in this “warriors” series was “Warriors: the ultimate guide” and loved it.I just finished reading the (Warriors: Tigerstar & Sasha: Into the woods Graphic novel) Warriors book and enjoyed it, but I did find it to also be a dark theme. In this book Sasha who was a loved house cat with an elderly couple is thrust into a new and frightening life alone outside. All her life she had been an indoor cat, but she was able to go in and out because of a cat door in the house. She would often visit a neighbor’s cat and explore around the area; however, she was still used to the love and comfort of living with humans.Sadly, she realizes she is all alone and enters the woods. She finds plenty of prey to hunt and eat in the woods, but she also discovers there are cat clans. She meets the head of one of the clans named Tiger Star and a new life begins for her. Tiger Star invites Sasha to meet the other cats in his clan, but there are also conflicts and factors that make Sasha suspicious of Tiger Star’s motives. The end of this graphic novel has Sasha confused as to what to do with her life. This ending leaves you wanting to read volume two of this series to find out (Escape from the Forest) what happens to Sasha.I enjoyed reading this graphic novel but I would imagine some children might not like the beginning of this book when Sasha is left alone by the humans. This is actually a very dark story that really has no happy ending which children may not understand.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Zen Poetry Moments: Haiku and Senryu for special occasions).

I thought this book was amazing! I loved the idea of a flood, and how the clans had to survive well inside of the flood. It was the most perfect idea, only a couple thing I thought where "off". Number 1: the series contradicts itself. In Dovewing's silence, Dovewing learns to live without her special senses, while here she tries to get them back in the tunnels. She feels as if she cannot live without them. Also, the 2 books also took place around the same time. 2 events happening at the same time? Also, you would know Bramblestar better than to have a crush on a loner! I mean I may receive hate for this but Bramblestar has it basically set with Squirrelflight! Also, how did Jessy notice their relationship so quickly? In my opinion, the plot was a little rushed like that. Also, why so many kittypets? Most people would have taken their cat with them to leave. Though, the points in the story I thought where interesting was when the apprentice died trying to fetch the stick. It made me so sad! Poor Brackenfur! Also, the stick kept on causing trouble, which put a mischievous spark on the story. When Minty also became reunited with her housfolk, that was happy. The flood after the Dark Forest was also a nice idea, and the opposite of what the cats call "The Long Dry" or something in that category. Overall I loved the story, worth the money, and recommend it to all readers

I've been collecting this series since i was in 5th grade and i was so excited to finally get this manga of the series and the other books as well. I definitely recommend this series for anyone.

My 13 year old daughter is addicted to this warrior series. Shes has the whole collection now and cherishes them. She can also use these on her reading test at school for a grade so that is a major plus.

My 10-year-old daughter is a HUGE Warriors fan. She has been a fan for the past two years or so. She has read every book in the series at least two or three times. She also has a number of friends who are fans as well. I like that the books are not just entertaining but she learns from them too. She tells us about different herbs you can find in the wild and what they can be used for. It is a wonderful series of books for her age group.

Erin Hunter never fails to delight and enthrall readers of all ages, and didn't fail this time. All the cats and Clans we have come to love and know are again reunited in a continuing saga as the Warrior Cats continue on. Having read these stories since Firestars first venture into the woods, I am so addicted to these beloved books, even though I am a grandmother. I can't waif to pass them on to my grandkids, and great grandkids! One of the best kids books ever... for kids of all ages.

I bought this book for two reasons, one very realistic, the other very shallow. I'll start with the shallow: I wanted to marry Andrew McCarthy when I was 15 years old. Okay, I got that part over with. The real reason I bought this book is because I discovered a while back that Andrew McCarthy is a travel writer (and Editor at Large) for National Geographic. As someone who dreams of being a world traveler, discovering all of the beauties of the world and learning all the cultures, being a citizen of the world (as Andrew says), I read his travel pieces to hear his take on some of the places I wish to explore someday. What I found is that Andrew is an exceptional storyteller. He describes the places he's been and things he sees with such colorful details. As I read some of his articles, I could almost picture myself there, seeing the things that he was describing. When I learned that he had a book coming out, I immediately ordered my copy so that I could read more of his explorations. You learn immediately from the cover of the book that the focus is not of his travels, but rather what he learns from his travels and the discoveries (both self and cultural) he makes to lead him to the point of marrying his longtime girlfriend. As I read the book, I found some of the same descriptive storytelling from his other travel stories, but I also found that Andrew is not the guy you expect him to be from his acting. He's a guy that prefers to be alone in his explorations and thoughts. I won't give the book away, but I will say that I originally only gave it three stars. And that's because I read it after having read some reviews here at Amazon.com. What I took from those was a tone that I used to read the book because many had said that he whined and really just needed to grow up. While I didn't get that from the book, I did assert a tone that really should not have been there. That said, I still really enjoyed Andrew's story and reading the book. The following weekend, I went to Atlanta with a friend who is both an avid reader and a world traveler. We attended a book festival event where Andrew was interviewed about his book. We found him to be the intelligent and witty guy that we expected him to be all along. While he may enjoy traveling alone, he is very good at charming a crowd. After hearing him discuss his book in person and talk about some of the specific situations that he had written about, I quickly learned that many of the places where I had asserted a bit of sarcastic tone really deserved a humorous tone. After that, I decided that my rating deserved at least four stars, not the original three that I gave it. I really enjoy Andrew's travel articles, I enjoyed his book, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to hear him speak about his book in person. All of that together made The Longest Way Home a very enjoyable experience as a whole. And, yes, the guy from Pretty In Pink can write. More importantly, he can tell a story.

Love this on lots of levels. Andrew McCarthy is someone I've been drawn to through his Hallmark movie characters. I can't say I paid that much attention to many of his movie before; I'm not a big movie or TV watcher. His characters on Hallmark drew me in and I wanted to find out more about this actor (and let's face it - he's cute.) When I found he turned to travel writing as a way to find himself I was more intrigued. It's always interesting to read how others process their journeys and travel writing is such a fun, spot on metaphor for exactly what he was and is going through on this journey of self discovery. His stories are rich in beauty, depth, truth, and most of all growth. McCarthy is willing to be open and vulnerable, His story isn't a cocky self-portrait, but one of humility, sharing, and encouragement for fellow travelers. It is his story. He is a private person in a very "under the microscope" occupation perhaps that paradox enabled him to expose his very personal side. I felt as if I found my husband's journal. Irish heritage, father issues, the traveling to try to 'find' something but not even knowing what they are looking for, one foot in/one foot out of relationships. As with Eat, Pray, Love and WILD, I admire the courage it takes for these authors to share their hopes, fears, dreams and realities with the public. So many reviewers are so judgemental on their personal choices. I don't think you have to agree with the author in order to take something good away from it. In Andrew's case, I will be honest and say I do not think his marriage holds much promise. Hope I am wrong. I would love to read more about his life since the marriage. ** I bought the Kindle version and was delighted to find the pictures at the end. It was only by sure luck that I continued to page 'forward' after the end of the book. What a pleasant surprise! **

This is a good, basic book about Thomas Jefferson that goes a little bit deeper than an early reader. It's more of a beginning chapter type of book. It covers the basics of his life and is done in an easy-to-read way... but I just found it somewhat dry to read. Still, it's a good book for those being introduced to history. Nothing controversial in it, I felt like the author was fair.This book was recommended to me for my child's third grade history, so I decided to read it first before I handed it off to her. So comparing to many of the other history books I've been reading (a good 30 or 40 of them!), I definitely found this one a bit boring and dry. Which is why I gave it four stars instead of 5. But still, all around a good book that I could recommend.

However much I thought this book would help us dig in to a bit of history thus book did its job. However don't be surprised when you kid recalls details like how Jefferson built his house and his family details instead of anything to do with the Declaration of Independence.

My 2nd grade son chose this book for a recent book report. I have to say, it's BY FAR, the best book that we've read on a president. Interesting facts, great illustrations and age appropriate text made it an easy read. I was thrilled when we finished the book with how much he remembered and STILL remembers months later about Jefferson. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Ordered for homeschooled grandsons.

This is a terrific book, just like the rest of the Landmark Books series. They give young children their first real exposure to the men and women who formed this wonderful country and made it what it is today!

My first-grader son loves these books. The amount of info is just right for a 1st-3rd grader. It's an older book, so it's not "dumbed down" as much as some newer books are.

I ordered this book for the pre school class and they are excited to read all the new books we purchased for the class.

People get up and talk about things like what they've been working on, results, etc. And for over three years I've avoided going up there. Are you kidding? Speak in front of the entire company? Um... No thank you. Not happening.Don't get me wrong. I *wanted* to get up there and speak. I had a lot that I wanted to say. And speaking to the company was important for my career. In fact, I really wanted to overcome my fear of public speaking because I knew that, if I could just get over this fear and develop the confidence to comfortably speak in front of audiences, I could take my career so much further. It would open up a whole new world of opportunity for me. I could speak at conferences, make a name for myself in the industry, etc.But I just didn't have the courage. I felt like if I even just spoke in front of a small group at work I would only manage to humiliate myself, end up hurting my career, and feel even worse about myself than I already did.So, I looked for help. Originally, I looked at The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook. I read it. But for some reason, it didn't really help me to work up the courage to put myself out there. Maybe because the book felt too cold and "clinical". Maybe because, as I would later discover, it failed to address some critical elements of my social anxiety.Anyway, somehow, I found Dr. Aziz. Here was a guy who'd done it; a guy who'd suffered from debilitating social anxiety, just like me, and overcome it.Like The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook, Dr. Aziz teaches that you need to go out there and begin to do those things that terrify you, starting small, getting comfortable with things that only give you a small amount of anxiety, and progressively working your way up until, for example, you're comfortable speaking in front of perhaps even thousands of people.However, there are two things that differentiate Dr. Aziz's method from The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook. First of all, Dr. Aziz teaches several principles that seem to be entirely absent from CBT; things like self-compassion and becoming comfortable with rejection. But literally the day before the meeting, they came up to me and said that they wanted me to prepare what I was going to say in such a way that they could *film it* and *distribute it* to existing and potential clients.Seriously? As if just speaking in front of the company wasn't stressful enough for me! Now you're going to record me speaking in front of the entire company AND you want to send the recording of me out to literally thousands of people!Well, the next morning, they called me down to speak. And... well... I knocked it out of the park. I felt way more comfortable and relaxed than I could have ever hoped. And when I'd finished, the son of the founder of the company was so moved that he yelled, "Boom!"I'm not gonna lie. It felt really good to have faced that fear and to have overcome it. Now, I guess it's on to the next level for me.

The book then outlines on how to do just that. It explains how to get over what blocks you from action, by explaining what it means to take an ownership stance to life instead of a victim stance, how to overcome the stories we tell ourselves, and how to resolve fear. Next, it talks about how to take action. Not only does the book show you what is possible, but it explains very practical solutions on how to achieve your dreams. I found that the book taught what it means to take responsibility very well. It has already helped me really see how I am in control of my life. The ways that it lists on how to take action are also great, because it really explains practical ways on how to achieve things. I really think this book shows how to take practical steps to achieve success.

I've been putting up with low self-esteem for 20-over years. I know Confidence and Self-esteem aren't the same but there are overlaps and this book has helped me face my invisible stories and deeper truths.It's gotten me to:- identify how I viewed myself vs how I view myself /the best self I want to be- stop beating myself up over trip-ups- hang out with my fears and insecurities without analysing them (the 1st step)- approach more rather than avoid (which was my default mode)One part I didn't fully agree with was when Dr. Aziz encouraged us to just say things out and don't hold back/don't filter etc. I still want to be aware of the things I want to say aloud because sometimes, the stuff in my mind isn't kind or helpful to others (yes, it ain't pretty up there all the time), and that's what I want to be careful with. When it comes to speaking up for something that matters or just telling others my opinion which is different from theirs, I'll definitely do more of that now. This book has been a great help!

The posters are of mediocre quality. They would be much nicer if they were laminated. One of the posters we have yet to get out of the tube/packaging due to a slight bend in the tube. I have contacted the seller but they have yet to resolve the issue or replace the poster.

Excellent teaching tool.
