Review

As long as inquisitive spirits still inhabit the world, there will be those who push the envelope of exploration. Sometimes it takes an adventurer with fiery soul to go where others fear to tread, taking the proverbial snake by its tail and propounding fresh new theories. Jim Barfield is one such unlikely researcher, whose quest for the secrets of the mysterious Copper Scroll has led him on an unparalleled excursion into the most controversial arena of ancient biblical scholarship, touching on hundreds of tons of buried gold and silver and even the fabled Ark of the Covenant. Agree or disagree with his avant-garde approach, his audacious journey will motivate and inspire. This story of Jim and his team is definitely worth a read!Kenneth L. HansonCoordinator, Interdisciplinary Program in Judaic Studies at University of Central FloridaThe unraveling of the ancient codes of the Copper Scroll, by a gentile arson investigator from Oklahoma, is a true story filled with mystery, adventure, and a sense of history in the making. It is beautifully told by Shelley Neese who lets the reader discover along with her a secret that has been hidden for over 2,000 years. It is a great read that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat and anxiously awaiting the final chapter, yet to be written. Susan M. MichaelUS Director, International Christian Embassy JerusalemNeese's narrative pacing and story-telling is masterful. She gets the political and religious nuances of contemporary Israel. The Copper Scroll Project will inform even Jews like mewho do not hanker for a Third Temple and abhor the notion of a 21st century theocratic Israel. The genuineness and decency of Christians such as Jim Barfield who want to embrace the Jewish side of Jesus comes through as real and touching. Elliot Jager Jerusalem-based author and former editorial page editor at The Jerusalem PostThe Copper Scroll Project, Shelley Neese's brilliant new work of nonfiction, is equal parts mystery, treasure hunt and erudite elucidation of biblical history. Add to that a cast of characters as quirky and compelling as Ocean's 11, a real-life plot ready made for Hollywood, and Neese's profound gifts as a storyteller, and you've got a book that will keep readers on the edges of their seats, even as it makes them reconsider much of what they thought they knew about the most puzzling Dead Sea Scroll of all. Read this book now!Chanan TigayAuthor of The Last Book of MosesThe Copper Scroll Project by Shelley Neese is a unique introduction not only to a famous biblical mystery but to the world of American Christian interest in Israel, which remains opaque or bewildering to many outsiders, and is often caricatured. Shelley is an observer and a participant both in the treasure hunt and in that religious world, so the book will require a leap of faith on the part of a general reader who doesn't operate under the same assumptions, but her enthusiasm carries the story along and it's a worthwhile education. I pass Qumran all the time and have always considered it to be basically a pile of rocks; now I see it a bit differently...Matti FriedmanAuthor of The Aleppo Codex and Pumpkinflowers

WOW. This is one of those books that is hard to put down. This is a true to life mystery that will keep the reader on the edge of his seat. I found myself anxiously waiting for what would come in the next chapter. At the beginning of the book, Shelley gives a “who’s who” list of the characters and the parts they played in this drama. In the first chapter, Shelley starts off describing Jim Barfield’s thirteenth trip to Israel. Thirteen was a lucky number for Jim and his team. She describes her first meeting with Jim in the second chapter and starts sprinkling her sense of humor into the book. She made me laugh and I liked her from that chapter on.Throughout the book, and at the appropriate times, Shelley gives pieces of history about the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Copper Scroll, the Western Wall, and the Temple Mount, and other necessary information as it relates to the Holy Land. She brings the people, including herself, to life with bits of personal information from time to time.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I plan to read it again because it is that good. Congratulations on your first book, Shelley. It is a keeper.Congratulations to Jim and his team for their perseverance and for having a great writer for this book.Janet Stearman Allaire

Shelley Neese crafts a gripping tale of intrigue, investigation and faith. The author does such a great job of telling the tale of Jim Barfield and getting inside his head that it is sometimes difficult to remember that she is the author and not he.When I started reading this book, Kindle informed me that the average reading time was 6 hours. I must have done something wrong. The the story itself was thoroughly engrossing, the text was chock full of facts and the only reason I wanted to finish was in order to see how the story ended. It still took me about 20-something hours to read it. I don't see how I could've read it any faster. The book is documentary in nature and follows the tried and proven formula of that genre.. start at the end and tell the reader what he is going to learn, tell them everything you know and then summarize what has been learned. There is very little repetition of the facts other than the occasional nod to a small piece of information that the reader might have missed earlier when it was of less importance. The book follows Jim Barfield from the genesis of his theory on where the artifacts written of in the Copper Scroll of Qumran might be hidden to the final revelation of it's possible proof (pun fully intended). It is hard to write this review without spoilers, as this reviewer would prefer not to lessen the readers' own enjoyment. Suffice it to say that if you are looking for a well-told story, this book will not disappoint. If you are looking for facts about the Copper Scroll, the book is full of facts related to the actual scroll and to its history. I was very impressed that when certain historical interpretations were being disputed by the various scholars, the reader was given the opportunity to see both sides. But, if you are looking for a treasure map, this book will disappoint. While this book describes a great treasure in monetary terms, it spends more time speaking of its worth as a religious treasure pointing to the veracity and accuracy of the Bible. Barfield's interest clearly does not lie with the former. He keeps the exact locations propounded in his theory to himself and those that must know (rightly so, I think) in order that when the treasure once again sees the light of day, it will immediately go into the hands of the Israeli people, whether it be their government or religious authorities. I do think that Jim would prefer the latter. He clearly has no interest in self-enrichment.On a more personal note of opinion, the discovery and unearthing of the Temple treasures would almost certainly be viewed as unequivocal evidence of Israel’s title and deed to the land and would have enormous political ramifications, the final result of which could never be accurately predicted by man. But, I can’t help but wonder about the more personal ramifications might be for those that are truly agnostic, not being able to decide whether or not they can truly believe that which is written in the Bible? How many of them, presented with such solid and tangible evidence might come to belief? If He wills the treasures of the Copper Scroll to be found, they will be. Will Jim Barfield be the man to bring it about? My powers of prognostication have been proven to be lacking. But, I wouldn’t count him out. His tenacity and drive is obviously second to none. The fact that he wants to find the treasure for all the right reasons might well give him a leg up on others that have tried and failed. As I read the book,it became apparent that there were a fantastic number of “coincidences and chance meetings” with people that would ultimately be able to help Jim achieve his goal. I wouldn't discount the possibility that there might be more to those coincidences than meets the eye. For one, I don’t believe in coincidence and I might suspect that Jim feels the same way. You might be tempted to jump to the end to see how the story ends. I’d recommend against it. The journey is the reward… At least for the moment. Perhaps there will be a Part Two in the not-too distant future. I certainly hope so.

This is a somewhat intricately woven tale by a skilled writer. This I must grant.I also appreciate that the story was written with the intent to be balanced and to portray this as a tale of investigation.Ultimately I regretted reading the book. There were interesting aspects but the information wasn't presented sufficiently rigorously for me to be confident of the conclusions being reached, the examinations of the reasons behind some choices were at best cursory and at times breathtakingly naive. I'd find myself groaning when certain viewpoints were expressed and narratives advanced.Understand, I think that the central characters deserve great respect and I even admire most/all of those. I also believe it likely that the central conclusion by Mr. Barfield is correct. But the idea that attempting to follow the desired course of action would have the results which are apparently anticipated is actually dangerously naive.I celebrate the primary protagonist and his closest circle for their determination, their core insight regarding the Copper Scroll, etc. But in the end the story is more frustrating than beneficial and more unintentionally comedic than it should be.Another thing? The insight about the Copper Scroll is not as unique as portrayed in the book. Some years ago I watched a program on TV which had similar ideas about the location of the expected treasures. The precise locations may or may not differ (I don't care enough to try to find out) but the general idea was very much the same. There is, however one big insight about the nature of Qumran in the book which I think was a unique discovery by Mr. Barfield. I'll not tell it here because I'm trying to avoid spoilers. So even though I regret the book, if you are more intrigued by the nature of Qumran than am I, then I consider this book to be an essential read. This is why I gave a 4-star review rather than a 3-star review. If you want to have the fullest possible understanding of Qumran I consider the book to be an ESSENTIAL read.

Shelly Neese did a wonderful narrative of Jim Barfield’s journey on how an ordinary man from Oklahoma got tangled in a web of Israeli Archeology, Israeli Government officials and its jurisdictions. She did a great job in covering the Copper Scrolls historical background and the differing opinions on the scroll.Jim’s perseverance thru the many obstacles put in his way is remarkable. The ending is great but can’t wait for Part 2!

As had everyone addicted to golf, I had watched every shot, every tragic happening, all the news about Tiger; I hardly felt I needed more. But 'Tiger' showed me I had less than 10% of the human story.Programmed from the cot to play golf and living live with no other purpose he did exactly that which his father expected of him. His father is exposed for all his depraved, bigoted, abusive and self indulgent traits. Tiger is unrelentingly proud of him but allows him to be buried in an unmarked grave. The reader is left question just "...Why..."? Little is said about Kultida but the most telling quote was that she told Tiger never to damage her name. Imagine her sitting, face drawn in the front row, while he was forced to face the press at The PGA Tour HQ after being caught cheating by Elin. There is plenty for the golfer. His change to the Nike Tour ball which flew straighter, after which he won the US Open by 15 shots at Pebble Beach...and ushered in the age of the modern ball. Tiger followed up with hitherto unheard of margins. Just how much are today's scores dependent on this technology?I only came to realize on the last three pages that he is still under probation for his drug cocktail arrest on Military Trail in May, 2017. As someone with three, and one very similar, back operations to those which Tiger underwent, I understand just how badly a man can crave Vicodin. Yet here we are, only eleven months later and Trackman tells us that Tiger has a 129 MPH clubhead speed. The book tells us just what an athletic phenomenon is Tiger, and even if not winning Majors again...I say 'Yet"...playing 4 rounds in 4 days, practising hard and competing is hard to believe.Plenty of drama; plenty of tragedy; little humor. But now we see TIger on television, charming to reporters, a warm humility in the man who rejected summarily nearly everyone who tried to hold him close. Perhaps burying the ghost of his controlling father and being left with only his mother will allow Kutilda to look upon her son with the pride denied her years ago.

LOVED this book! An absolute page turner from start to finish. Yes, I'm a golf fan, but this is a story of human psychology and the cost of being an outlier. Talks as much about parents as it does about Tiger himself. Riveting. Provides the dark, inspiring and sad context to rise and fall of Tiger Woods. Benedict does it again, leaving no stone unturned and piecing together a rare glimpse into the real Tiger Woods. A greek tragedy in every sense: promise, hope and generational talent brought down by hubris, vice, and karma. You do not need to be a golf fan to enjoy this book.

The two authors are so compassionate and understanding of what and who made Tiger. He is a product of his upbringing, as we all are and fixing ourselves as we get to be adults is usually impossible. As I always believed, Tiger's problems are mental and emotional and in some ways responsible for his physical problems too. The book is totally supportive of Tiger and I read the last few pages with tears clouding my eyes. Tiger should be happy with the book just because Benedict and Keteyian are on his side. If he's not, the reason is simply that it exposes personal sides of Tiger and being the intensely private person he is, he won't like that but I think he's beginning to realize the pettiness of his feelings and who's his friend and who isn't. If you love Tiger, you'll love this book.So private, here's an example: O'Meara was being interviewed by the Golf Channel and one question was how is Tiger and O'Meara answered with "good days and bad days." That's all he said. That night there was a late night Tiger text to O'Meara that read," I love you like a brother but I'd appreciate it if you didn't discuss my health with the media.I hope that all the people that were so good to Tiger thru the years, personal and professional, forgive him someday and try to understand him. He wasn't raised to be a good and nice person. Earl and Kultida were failures as parents in my opinion and this book, without saying so, makes that pretty clear.

Simply put, this is the most complete book about the rise and fall of one of the greatest golfers ever that I've ever read. The way his upbringing, and the way his parents raised him, and influenced him, showed up again and again as he grew into adulthood, and not always in a favorable way. You learn several not so pleasant things about the way he's treated people who were allegedly friends, and especially the people he perceived as enemies. He was constantly surrounded by money - fame - fortune - and obligations to keep it all going forward. All while retooling his swing several times, and (almost) coming back better than before. From a golf perspective, this book also clearly points out - more than once - just how good Tiger was in his hey day. No one - repeat no one - will ever consistently win 30% of the tournaments they enter in a year. Today's golfers would be likely to do it once,...and Tiger did it repeatedly. At one point he was the defending champ - in all four majors - at the same time. Obviously Tiger Woods the man is still a work in progress, and who knows when/if he'll ever win on tour again. But Tiger Woods the golfer is very simply one of if not the best ever. Stop labeling every golfer who wins once or twice "the next Tiger Woods". On the course, there will - never - be another.

An exceptional read and very entertaining as well as informative. It was quite interesting to delve into the life and childhood of Tiger and it was as expected, a domineering set of parents, who set out to create the worlds greatest golfer. Along the way the poor guy did not have a normal childhood, with friends and siblings. He was an only child, essentially shut off from the world though golf and more golf and when done with that some more golf. An introverted personality developed and who knows what he might have been like if not for his first love Dana........I liked that part of the book best. I wish the authors had let the reader know what ever became of Dana. Good book, buy it and enjoy it and you will more than likely want to read it again.

Taking Charge: The Electric Automobile in America

From Booklist

To most modern Americans, the electric automobile is a charming anachronism, a memory of a time long past, not unlike high button shoes or chicken houses in urban backyards. In fact, electric automobiles are making something of a comeback as society searches for alternative systems of locomotion for our precious private cars. Schifer looks in detail at electric autos, their development, eventual supplantation by gasoline guzzlers, and burgeoning return to favor. Although he devotes most of the book to the days when the very concept of machine-powered personal travel was new, Schifer, in the final analysis as well as chapter, makes the case for reviving electric autos. On the way, he examines the various reasons that development of alternatively powered automobiles stagnated and also the social history of the automobile and automobile ownership. Part car-nut's history, part social history, this is a fine resource for popular culture and American studies collections. The vintage photos and bibliography are by themselves arguably worth more than the purchase price. Mike Tribby

Amazon is a wonderful place to go book browsing. Not only will you find new books but also a staggering cross-referenced selection of out of print materials, iconizisized and eligible for super-saver shipping. Taking Charge The Electric Automobile In America came up in a search for electric vehicle book. Weighing in at 225 pages, I felt a book on electric vehicle history was worth a read. Michael Schiffer surprised me though with the truth about how wide spread electric vehicle usage was in early America. The discussion of how the power industry operates will give you the reader a better view of how much energy is out there and ready to be used. All of this combines into a somewhat stale yet important volume about early American history. The goal of the book is to examine and explain why electric vehicles disappeared in the early 1920's. The author walks us through the initial distribution of power in the United States and the problems associated with DC in a wide area network. Then, the rollout and problems associated with lead-acid batteries of the time, particularly when used in a fleet of sixty cabs in New York city. The lead-acid batteries were sensitive to the bumps and vibrations of daily travel causing them to last less than six months. Today we expect no less than a two year life-span out of our lead-acid batteries in cars. Moving on, Thomas Edison, a prominent figure in early battery research, and Henry Ford converge in a battle of gasoline vs electric. We all know the ultimate conclusion but the methods both men used are quite sinister.Michael covers three theories at the opening of this book to explain why this happened: vested interest, technological constraint and consumerist. The theories were new to me and gave me a much needed foundation to debate the demise of electric vehicles in the 1990's. While coverage of the theories here would be worthwhile, I leave you the reader the opportunity to examine them and offer your opinion in a followup review to my own. These theories are being tested even now in Key West, FL on a smaller scale. Over the past two years electric vehicle rentals have quietly pressed the gasoline moped rental market share to an alarming 50% by my best estimates and through interviews over the past weekend. Hotels now offer charging services for these six passenger mini cars to guests at no extra charge (no pun intended). I wish you could have seen my face as my cab pulled me up to the Casa Marina hotel and I saw a line of Think EV's being charged! We can learn a lot from studying the past. You can also see proof of this "history repeats itself" proverb in this book. Taking Charge was published in 1994, before GM's EV1 program was leasing cars. The vested interest theory presented herein is eerily similar to how GM squashed the EV1. To drive the point home, General Motors and Ford are credited in this book with killing the first generation of electric cars!

This kind of book is an worthwhile since so many people are discussing the pros and cons of electric cars. Invariably mention is made of the fact that electric cars have as long a history as gasoline cars. This book is more or less about that history. It is not heavy on lots of details so it makes for a fairly interesting and fast-moving read. In covering the history of the electric car, the author also covers the history of gasoline cars, the development of central power stations in the US, and some social customs such as touring. There are a number of interesting details about that time period, and some of the main characters like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, that you may not have thought about before. While the book talks about different issues surrounding the rise and fall of the electric car, the main conclusion appears to be that battery capacity and range have, and will continue to be the main obstacle to acceptance of electric cars. The last chapter of the book attempts to look ahead. Since the book dates to before the whole GM EV-1 fiasco, the predictions seems a bit naive and optimistic in light of what we now know happened, and the whole issue of high gas prices was not a factor when the book was written. While this book doesn't contribute a whole lot of new information relevant to the current discussion of electric cars, it does give a nice background to their history in the US.

This book concentrates on the early commercial history of the electric car. Only a small final chapter is devoted to progress in electric cars since the 20's.What makes the book so interesting are the recurring themes of electric cars, present since their inception. "They're too slow", "They don't have the range", "new batteries will be coming out next year"... all of which apply to the current discussion of electric cars in 2007.Even hybrid cars were experimented with very early on, and one wishes for a bit more technical information on those. Plus it would be nice to know what happened to Edison's replacement for the lead-acid battery. Is it still in use today? Or is it extinct? The last chapter is also fun. His prognostications are not too far off the mark. He predicted the next innovation would not come from the Big 3 automakers, no matter what they said they were going to do. That turned out to be true. He also predicted we would have some options for buying electric cars by now. In that he was wrong, but we do have the Prius and Insight. So, all in all, a fine early history, but you'll still want to know more to fill in that gap from 1920-2007!

If you are curious about the history of electric vechicles, you must read this!

This book starts out with a history of how Americans became mobile and the choices we made with respect to bicycles, mass transit and cars. It then goes into modest detail about the development of power generating stations needed to support electric cars and into great detail about the development of electric cars and how they fit into U.S. society. Development of gas cars is covered in depth only to compare the technologies and illustrate the choices we made. By reading this, you know a great deal about transportation technology and the society that developed it. The last chapter is all about the present and near term future of electric cars. The book offers an excellent depiction of how we have become the mobile society (or mobile mess?) that we became. Recommended for history buffs and especially for electric car enthusiasts.

The South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life (The South Beach Diet)

Amazon.com Review

Book DescriptionA pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes. This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn’t happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table. In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day. "What Size Is Your Cholesterol?"An Essay by Arthur Agatston, MDYou may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future. Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general. While there is some good helpful information in this book, it goes a bit overboard on the testing aspects, i.e. heart scans CT scans, advanced lipids etc and the list goes on. But then again, it's written by a cardiologist. I think the aspects of the diet are fundamentally good but personally feel the new gold standard title on heart health should be "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell Esselstyn. It was absolutely the best of all of those I've read. I did learn some things reading this but I would alert the reader to take some of it with a grain of salt. There are simply too many tests recommended and one probably does not need all of these tests. My belief is that if you consume the right foods, you probably won't need all of those tests. In a whole food plant based diet, you'll be healing your arteries and removing inflammation at the same time, so there should not be any need for a lot of these tests if the diet aspect is in place. I'm glad I bought the kindle version for $2.10 as I wouldn't pay much more for it.

If you have a health problem, particularly your heart, you have got to read this book. Turn back time if you make the commitment and follow through. You can be a healthier you. You can live healthy and be healthy without starving yourself or being on some ultra regimented diet/exercise program. Down to earth, realistic and doable.

This book changed my life! Being on the north side of 60, I had accumulated many bad eating habits and with a family history of heart disease I knew I was living with a short fuse. After reading "The South Beach Heart Program" I've lose nearly 20 pounds (and never remember really being hungry) and my blood work hasn't looked this good in about 30 years. Thank you Dr. Agatston.

I bought this book a month or so ago. No book (even the South Beach Diet book) has had more impact on my life, than this one. First, it made me stop and think of the abuse I have been inflicting on my body for so many years. Second, scared me into doing something about it. Thus I have been diligent following both the South Beach Diet, and starting an exercise plan I can follow and live with. The book is almost like a textbook, but with language anyone can follow. There are a wide variety of tests we need to have run to know where we stand with heart disease, diabetes, etc. And Dr. Agatston spells it all out for the lay person to understand and accomplish. This is a book that everyone who cares about living to a ripe old age should read. And you should wait till you're 50 to read it. Buy it now!! Truly, this 4-Step Plan may save your life.

Let me sum up this book in one word - FABULOUS. Dr. Agatston gets it RIGHT, and no body else has come close. The amount of incorrect information that millions of Americans are receiving about heart disease from the mass media is shocking. Very few people are doing more than ten percent of what they need to do to prevent falling victim to this COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE DISEASE.Most readers will read Dr. Agatston's book because he is the author of the wildly popular South Beach Diet, but this is a great standalone book. This is the book that the good Doctor could have written first, because he is a MASTER of heart disease. He is the creator of the Agatston scoring system, which is utilized when one has a heart scan.Maybe you haven't heard of a heart scan? Dr. Agatston talks about the new heart scanners that are available in his book. The modern heart scan which is non invasive, and takes only a couple of minutes to perform is the device that will probably revolutionize heart disease care in the next ten years. At the same time very few doctors in the United States are recommending that their patients get a heart scan. The reason is that doctors, like most of us are creatures of habit. They are also employing a business model that they don't want to change. Read Dr. Agatston's book, and you will realize that only through a painless, quick heart scan can you detect if you truly have heart disease. Oh yes, you can also detect heart disease through an $8,000 angiogram, but no insurance company will pick that up unless you have SYMPTOMS. You don't want to wait to have heart symptoms before confirming you have heart disease. One more thing you need to know and the book is clear on this point. If you have successfully passed a treadmill test, you could STILL have heart disease that is about to deliver a massive heart attack to you. The reason is that most doctors still hold to a "Plumbers view" of heart disease learned in medical school. They believe incorrectly that heart disease is a gradual build-up of a blockage(s) until the blockage completely blocks off the artery, and a heart attack ensues. We know now that this is only true for a minority of heart attacks. The treadmill test can only pick up blockages of 70% or more. The vast majority of heart attacks are resulting from blockages of 15% to 25%. These blockages have soft fibrous caps that suddenly ERUPT. A blood clot forms, and SCABS OVER the eruption, blocking the passageway, and BINGO, you have a massive heart attack. Most doctors do not understand this modern theory of heart disease, which is about 4 years old. They are still adhering to the plumbers' model, ordering treadmill a test, when they should be ordering heart scans. When you then pass the treadmill test because you don't have a 70% blockage anywhere in your system, they pronounce you fit and send you home with flying colors. Meanwhile, you could have scores of 15% or 20% blockages, be a walking time bomb, and no one is intervening.Dr. Agatston also does a fabulous job at clarifying the issue of Cholesterol. This chemical is vital to living. Our cells could not live without Cholesterol. The problem is that our bodies get too much Cholesterol with the modern diet. Our evolution is still based on the nomadic existence of millions of years of living in warm climates, with tall grasses, and a hunter, gatherer's instincts. Our modern diet produces, and allows us to inject way more Cholesterol than we need to live. What the Doctor does so well is tell you that it's not your Cholesterol SCORE that matters, but your Cholesterol SIZE that matters. It's also the type of Cholesterol that you have that matters. As they said about Godzilla, SIZE DOES MATTER. Dr. Agatston understands and explains the importance of the different types of Cholesterol particles. Once you GET IT, it will radically change your understanding of what you have to do. There are good types and bad types of Cholesterol and it's all covered in an easy to understand manner. Most doctors when they test you will not specify PARTICLE SIZE and TYPE. Your test comes back with a Total Cholesterol number, and you think you're home free. In reality you might have progressive heart disease. It's all in the book, and if you even think you have a remote possibility of heart disease, you need to be AWARE of these ideas. When you are dealing with heart disease, the patient needs to be INFORMED. An informed patient gets better care and better outcomes than a patient that says to the doctor FIX ME. There are also those patients who don't want to know about their disease, and that's not the way to go.I have read Dr. Agatston's book thoroughly, and have compared it to just about everything else on the market that's out there. It compares very favorably. He's a good writer, and the book was not ghost written for him. There are a number of books on this subject where the big guy on the cover is NOT writing the book. Medical residents, and research associates are writing them. Is this necessarily bad?If you are paying for a big name doctor to write a heart book, you want the big name doctor to have written that book. Do you want to read a book by a famous doctor on the cover, who than has a 27-year-old resident write it for him, or do you want to read the REAL THING? The South Beach Diet Program is the real thing, written by the real guy. Good luck, and get that heart scan.Richard Stoyeck

If you read the South Beach Diet you will absolutely love this book. While it touches on some of the principles of the diet, it has much more to offer. The writing style is easy to follow and very informative and the book is loaded with practical information. If you are concerned about your heart health, this book is a must read. The book has motivated me to speak to my doctor and medication and other treatments, to exercies more and eat better and healthier foods. The author is very inspiring to read as he was in the Sough Beach Diet as well. Dr. Agatston seems very well informed, educated and highly experienced in heart health matters. This bood has excellent medical advice and lifestyle recomendations to can be easily attained by all. Read this book and you too may live a longer and more productive, healthier and happier life.

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

When I first opened the book, Give It A Go, Eat A Rainbow, I thought this was written about my life 12 years ago. I was like Blake. All I wanted to eat was cake, cookies and sweet treats. My stomach hurt, my health was failing. I was old enough to know better than to eat like that. Then I wised up and started eating healthy. I feel so much better today than I did years ago. I never... ever want to go back to that period in my life. Now, I have young Grandkids. 3 of them eat very healthy and 3 of them don't.My one Granddaughter who is only 4 loves carbs, cheese, sweets and needs to learn to eat more fruits and vegetables. I am surprised because her mother knows to feed her healthy. I can't figure out why she doesn't. The kid is tired all the time. Has no stamina and complains of belly aches. I plan on giving this book to that Granddaughter and her Mother in hopes that they read it and something clicks in their heads. I hope from reading this book they figure out what they are doing wrong, and why she is having stomach problems at such a young age. Before I give it to the granddaughter who needs it, I read it to my other Grandkids. We made a plate of food from the rainbow. I let them choose what they wanted in their rainbow. They loved doing this with me, and because they had a hand in making it, they ate it all up.This interactive book starts out with a young boy named Blake who is sleepy, has tummy aches and just can't keep up with the other kids. Blake likes to eat cookies, candies and all things sweet. One day, Blake meets a friend who helps teach him about nutrition, using fruits and vegetables of rainbow colors. What a fun way to teach kids about healthy eating. If you have a picky eater in your home, this book could help them in a fun interactive way to choose foods that are healthy for them.So.... Give it a go, Eat a rainbow!!

"Don't do this." "You have to do that." These are losing parenting strategies, and also losers for grandparents (like me.) Kids learn best from stories and games. I'm so glad that Kathryn Kemp Guylay has saved me from negative nagging with this book. She saved me also from telling my daughters that they really should be feeding their kids more fruits and veggies. It's funny because as a psychologist who has authored a book for helping children to stop thumbsucking habits, David Decides About Thumbsucking: A Story for Children, a Guide for Parents, I have long known how powerful biblio-therapy can be. Yet I never would have thought of what this book does, which is to impact kids' choices of what foods to eat. Hurray and huge thanks to this clever nutritionist!I highly recommend also Solving Sleep Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Guide for Frazzled Families. A study researching the impacts of bibliotherapy (though this book is for the parents) versus therapy for families of autistic spectrum kids (and for that matter, any kids) with sleep difficulties, the outcome proved to be that therapy and reading a book could be equally helpful. The bottom line— Give it a Go, Eat a Rainbow has potential to have strong and positive impacts on the children we love and most want to grow up with healthy eating habits.ps, This book even motivated me, the grown-up, to pay more attention to how many and which colors I am eating!

This review is written with the help of my friend Tristan, who is 8 years old. We just read this book together before dinner and it made us both really hungry! We had fun guessing more foods that are bright colours. Here's what Tristan likes about this book:1. I enjoyed the rhyming story2. It was fun to read3. It told me things about food I didn't know4. I enjoyed the food pictures the most -- there were good illustrations. If you have some types of e-reader the wonderful pictures will be in black and white, which is really a shame because this book is full of glorious colour on every page. We recommend buying the print version to enjoy all the pictures. This book is easy to read for children in grade 3 and older. Also would be a good book for them to read to their younger brothers and sisters.

Give It a Go, Eat a Rainbow Like this approach to get kids to eat more healthier. Starts out and we learn that Blake is not feeling so well. He only likes candy and cookies and things that are sweet. The words are rhyming and easy to read on some of the backgrounds. He meets a new friend and he tells Blake how he can get more energy-enough so he can play. There are notes for the parents to ask the child while they are reading along with them to pick out what foods are red and what part of the body they are good for.Like a mini quiz and you've been given the answers to, if you were paying attention. Really like blue and purple pages.

Though poem was fun and I like the fruit and vegetable imagery. The interactive questions were fun too. But the illustrations were not made by an artist. Beyond the rainbow of food, there was nothing visually interesting. I was looking forward to clever color play and this felt more like a mishmash of stuff thrown together just to support the story.Hire an artist to revamp it and I'll give it five stars. I would also recommend it to teachers and parents of young children; especially those that garden or have picky eaters.

Alaia absolutely LOVES this book!!! Thank you SO much for writing it!! Alaia looks at it and wants me to read it to her ALL of the time!! And best of all she's actually tried a couple of new fruits and veggies!! So many excellent recipes throughout this book, well researched and prepared to bring high level cuisine to the level that can be made by the average home "chef". A lot of recipe books have a few good items and lots of filler, you won't find that to be the case here, there are soo many gems all through these pages.

Excellent condition, would highly recommend!

My sister and I are astounded by the umber of truly delicious recipes i the book. I really love the caesar salad recipe.

This cookbook is interesting to read and the recipes sound delicious. The one I have tried, the bruschetta at the beginning of the book, was very successful. I should have expected, but was surprised to see, recipes with so many different cultural influences. "Exotic" ingredients might be a draw back for Alaska bush cooks.

I purchased this as a gift for a friend from Alaska. They enjoyed it very much.

There are a lot of good recipes and ideas for cooking salmon, halibut, shrimp, scallops and crab just like they serve it at your favorite steak and seafood restaurant. Ingredients are easily accessible after a trip to the grocery in the lower 48. But I don't think I would know it was in any way Alaskan cuisine unless the view through the lodge window told me so. The chefs in this compilation are working jobs at high end lodge and restaurants after being trained in the art somewhere else. Lodge clientele are paying top notch rates for their Alaskan fishing or hunting experience so no one is taking any chances with the menu choices. Perhaps that is why there aren't any recipes featuring local Alaskan caribou, wild game, razor clams or arctic char. Just the stuff we see at every seafood counter in the lower 48. I counted more than 50 recipes for salmon, halibut, crab, oysters and scallops while only each for goose, venison, Cornish game hen and a couple of pork, beef and chicken dishes to help out the seafood impaired crowd. I will put this collection next to my Tom Douglas cookbooks for ideas when entertaining out of townies after a trip to Seattle's Pike Market!

A friend had this cookbook and made the Chili Verde recipe. It was excellent. So I had to find it and I was able to order it on Amazon. I have made several of the other recipes now and all of them I would make again. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone.

I bought this book [...] in Anchorage while on vacation to help me cook all the fish we were catching. so far, so Great! the Herb crusted Halibut is wonderful! so is the Barbequed salmon with tomato-caper salad.some recipes are kind of involved, but so worth it!

Fun book for Star Wars fans of all ages. The stylized art is very appealing. Would be a good book for a parent to read with a young Star Wars fan.

I bought a set of these books for my 4 year old nephew. He loves them and they are a good level for him to read with his mom and dad's help. My only complaint is that the pages are very thin feeling. It seems as if they may rip easily. For the price, the books are great.

Great books, super informative. Learned some names and storyline reading these to my twin boys2 thumbs way up

Gave this to my son around his 6th birthday ... he loved it. Not to long, big pictures, good for any Star Wars fan.

I got this for my soon-to-be 10 yr old grandson bc it was easy for him to read but not too simple. The description says up to age 2, that's not right at all. You'd have to read it to a 2-yr old yes, that's true, but if you want a kid to engage in it by him/herself, they'd need to be older. Lots of nice color illustrations.

I’m a Stars Wars dork.
